Saints Place David Thomas on Injured Reserve

In a not so surprising move, the Saints have placed tight end David Thomas on injured reserve. Mike Triplett at the Times-Pic appears to have broken the news first.

The New Orleans Saints placed tight end David Thomas on injured reserve Tuesday, ending his season. The team has not yet announced Thomas' injury, though it appeared that he suffered another concussion during their last game against the Atlanta Falcons. Earlier this year, a severe concussion sidelined Thomas for five games.

This shouldn't hurt the Saints too much. Thomas has been a non-factor all season due to injury. In fact, he only has five receptions for 16 yards this year, though he's very effective as a blocker. It just sucks because I had hoped he'd get better before the end of the season and start to contribute the at the level we know he's capable. Oh well.

Tight end Michael Higgins was moved to the active roster.

Just don't dust them off in public, please.

it will hurt our edge runs..

it will hurt our “chipping..”
& he is the best hybrid TE/HB we had.. capable of lining up anywhere..
he is the only other receiving TE we had other than some kid higgins on the practice squad..
this is bad news..

Ah so

They will more than likely be signing Higgins off the practice squad tommorow? Or maybe there’s a free agent sitting by the phone somewhere…

by Valmo on Nov 22, 2011 8:29 PM CST up reply actions

but he's only appeared in a handful of games

I know I was hoping he’d come back stronger, but they’ve already been working without him for much of the season…

That Sux, was hoping he could be 100%

for this stretch run, he’s a steady player, knows his role. Must be one hell of a headache.

He ought to be retiring soon

When concussion symptoms start to happen more frequently, are more severe than normal, or occur with less impact than previously, it’s time to hang ’em up. Cleats, that is; not – well, you know, 9th plague.

His retirement would be a drag, because Thomas has been a big contributor to the Saints; but he’s got a family (and himself) to look after.

Whatever the outcome of this, best wishes to David Thomas. The Saints will miss him.

That’s the end of Seans “burger option” play for the season.

I agree that Thomas wasn't that effective this year

But………….if we had a second TE that could catch well, we would jump up to another level on offense.

As it is, our offense is really good- mostly. But, I still feel that a second pass receiving TE would be awesome and would really help. And, Graham has to stay healthy.

Do you enjoy seeing him on the sideline in street clothes, cheering on his teammates? Here’s a little nostalgia.

Duly noted

But I liked Shockey. Even when injured and on the sidelines he was a motivating factor for the Saints. I was sorry to see him let go. I never saw David Thomas on the sidelines trying to fire up his teammates (nothing agains DT he is just not as fiery as Shockey).

I like Hamburgers!

I liked Shockey too. He caught the winning touchdown in Super Bowl 44.

Agreed on David Thomas too. Nice guy, well liked by his teammates, but quiet. I fear he got jacked up so badly that this may be a career ending injury, which is a shame.

Stu’j… i noticed your new profile pic.

Was that the legit good play, or was that the one where he was out of position and the rookie threw a wild pitch?

Grumps is right about motivation.

The team needs more motivation. Shockey nor Bush were the players for this team, but they motivated the players and that’s why we were so hyped up and ready to kick ass. Brees was always a motivator but he needs help. Some other guys have to step up and be vocal. We’re 7-3 and have a damn good chance at winning it all. We need leaders on this team even though they are not meant for this team.
