Buccaneers 3 @ Saints 17: Saints Running The Ball And Running It Well

A week after the performance at St. Louis, the Saints have come out trying to prove they are still an elite team. The Saints have run the ball very well and Brees has been accurate, as usual.

The defense has been doing good in terms of points, but are giving up yards. They need to tighten up a little bit or else the yards could turn into points if they aren't careful. The defense has been focused on the run and even stopped a critical 4th down play by the Bucs.

The offense has to be the story though. A week after a near refusal to run the ball, the Saints have been focused on the run with great results. Pierre Thomas, Chris Ivory, and of course Darren Sproles have all gotten touches in this game and have all wanted more. The only worry is that Pierre hobbled off the field after running the ball towards the end of the 2nd quarter.

Let's hope the Saints continue their performance for a much needed division win and the lead in the NFC South. Make the jump to see some stats from the first half, and for you second half open thread.

He’s about to break the INT record over 2 seasons at this rate.

I'm living in the material world

by stujo4 on Nov 6, 2011 2:06 PM CST up reply actions

From what I wrote yesterday.
At halfway point, Brees leads the league in yards with 2,746 yards. 2nd is Cam Newton with about 350 yards less. Drew Brees is also 2nd in the league in touchdown passes with 19. First place is Aaron Rodgers with 20. Drew Brees has the 4th best QB rating with 100.6, which is 8.3 points higher than his career average.

The bad: Brees is 2nd in most interceptions in the league. #1 is Phillip Rivers with 11. Tom Brady is a few slots below with 8. Brees is tied for 6th most sacks in the league. Knowing how good his pocket awareness is, proves just how bad his O-line (specifically the tackles) are. Yet, it’s not the O-line’s fault, it’s Brees fault for _______. (side note: That horrible, horrendous Bears O-line has given up 21 sacks…the Saints have given up 19. Think about that for a little bit.)

Finally, Drew Brees has the most attempts of all QBs with 42.9 per game. However, he has the 2nd highest completion rate with 70.6, which ties his NFL record 2009 season.

Now let’s compare that with 2008 numbers (because this season has such parallels to the 2008 season). After 8 games in 2008, Brees had 15 touchdowns, 7 interceptions, 2563 yards, 102.1 QB rating, 69.1 completion %, 210 completions with 304 attempts and 7 sacks. Why is 7 sacks bolded? Because Brees has 19 after the same amount of games.

Since I keep comparing 2011 to 2008, here are the final numbers for the 2008 season:
34 touchdowns, 17 interceptions, 5069 yards, 96.2 QB rating, 65% completion rate, 415 completions with 655 attempts, 13 sacks.

Meaning Brees would have to throw just 15 more touchdowns in 8 games (little under 2 TDs a game), throw a little under an interception a game, 2323 yards in 8 games (his average is 343.8 yards per game, which would leave him over by 427.4 yards), Lower his QB rating by 4.4 points, lower his completion rate by 5.6%. Finally, 2008 had Brees on the ground 13 times total. He has already been sacked 19 times. Again, this O-line is pathetic, and people blaming Brees for every problem really need to readjust their thoughts.

Doing all of that would match Brees "best*" offensive performance in his career. Of course, he isn’t elite because he can’t match his best QB performance in his career and one of the best QB performances in NFL history.
.
*I consider 2008 his best offensive performance and 2009 his best QB performance. He did better in terms of offensive stats in 08, and QB stats in 09.

TL;DR: Brees is awesome. Still one of the best. STFU.
