Ask The Falcoholic!
I'm back by unpopular demand!
As most of you probably know by now, I'm the head honcho over at The Falcoholic. We cover the Atlanta Falcons, a team I understand most of you dislike for some reason. With the game coming up on Sunday between the Saints and Falcons, I figured I'd drop by to answer any questions you might have.
Please note that "why do the Falcons suck?" and "you're stupid" are not, in fact, legitimate questions. Everything else is good.
If you don't mind Recommending this so it stays near the top of the list, I would be grateful. Here's to a great game.

Morning Dave...
If you aren’t willing to tackle the tough questions, namely:
why do the Falcons suck?I don’t know how useful this will be. Ha!
After seeing Ryan’s stats of late, how concerned are Falcon’s fans that he is taking a few steps back this season.
Julio Jones: Are you seeing the talent you hoped for after selling the farm for him in the draft?
Dunta Robinson: Without any homer glasses on, do you think he is a cheap shot artist or just “highyl aggressive”?
Gonzo: Much gas in the tank left or is this a position you think you will be addressing in this coming years draft?
I like Hamburgers!
I'll tackle these one by one, excepting the not real question
1) There’s a pretty even split between fans who are extremely concerned about Ryan and those who think absolutely nothing’s wrong with him. As you might imagine, that’s been interesting.
I fall somewhere in the middle. I think Ryan’s scuffling a bit this year and it’s a concern, but I’m not panicking at all. He should start turning it around in the second half.
2) We just saw the talent we were hoping for. Jones put up 131 yards on three catches yesterday, including a diving 50 yard touchdown catch in triple coverage and an 80 yarder on a slant. He’s fast, powerful and sure-handed enough to be one of the best receivers in the league. Hopefully, he’s just getting started.
3) I think he has terrible tackling form. I think Dunta’s an aggressive player who doesn’t worry much about how he’s hitting players, and he sucks at wrapping up. So I don’t think he’s a cheap shot artist on purpose, but he ends up making those kinds of hits way too often.
4) I think the Falcons have to address the position in the upcoming draft, no matter how much gas Tony has left in the tank. He could retire, he could walk away for another team or he could finally fall off a cliff in 2012. I’m just enjoying the ride right now, though.

Thanks Dave
Since I can’t willingly say good luck on winning the division (since that title will hopefully be ours) are you willing to accept a “good luck on getting a wildcard spot”?

Sorry
Those are going to the Lions and Eagles or Cowboys (or possibly the Bears).

I dunno about that
The Lions, yes, but I’ve not been so impressed with the Eagles or Cowboys that I think they’re locks to sew up the other spot.

Agreed
The Eagles have a long way to go to dig out of the hole they dug into to start the season. And the Cowboys are the Cowboys. If there’s a way for them to screw up their season, they’ll find it. I think the NFC wild card teams will come from the NFC North and NFC South.

Tonight's game will go a long way to determining the 2nd wildcard
and the Eagles future for this season. They seem to have started getting it together, and if they keep it up, they are going to be a scary team.
The Bears, on the other hand, are quietly winning games, and if they can do it tonight, they will be in a good position. They do have a mostly tough schedule remaining though.

Looking at the rest of the Falcons schedule
I may have to rethink this. Only three games against teams over .500 – two games against the Saints and one at Houston.

The fact that they came out of the first eight games at 5-3...
…means they’ve got an excellent shot of finishing with a winning record, at the very least.

Hi, Mr. Dave2. Why does Matt Ryan suck? It’s his arm strength. He needs to work out like a maniac, similar to what Drew BREEESSS!!! did in the offseason. Ryan is only going to get better, I think.
I'm living in the material world
I don't really think arm strength is the problem
I see it more as poor decision-making at times, with a side of happy feet.

well then I must rotoworld you , sir
rotoworld.com:
Matt Ryan completed 14-of-24 passes for 275 yards, three touchdowns and one interception against the Colts in Week 9. The efficient performance produced a passer rating of 120.7, but Julio Jones did most of the work in the aerial attack. Ryan’s arm still looks mediocre, and he had several near interceptions against an overwhelmed Colts defense. With a stronger arm, he could force more throws into tight coverage and increase his interception rate, just like Drew BREEESSS!!! (not necessarily a criticism, just a fact)
I'm living in the material world
He doesn't have the strongest arm out there
But it’s the fact that he’s forcing these throws without Brett Favre’s arm that’s getting him in trouble.

Why does Matt Ryan suck?
He’s the 4th winningest QB since 08, should be number 1. He’s only #3 in comebacks, what a loser. This is the one that gets me, the freaking jerk has only given us 3 winning seasons since he’s been in the league. WHAT A BUM, this guy.

So you have not been underwhelmed by his performance this season?
And since the season is at the halfway point, that is a reasonable question. He gave up the only points the Colts scored yesterday. He’s just a tad above 60% completion and has a 12-9 TD to INT ratio. On top of that he has fumbled 8 times and lost 3 of those. Although he has been sacked 19 times. Is there some trouble with the O-line?
by BlackandGold4ever on Nov 7, 2011 10:23 AM CST up reply actions
At times.
We just went through a rough part of our schedule but that’s over and I do expect him to get better. A great deal of his inconsistent play can be attributed to the O line issues we are having so I think he’s handled it pretty well in spite of our invisible LT. I’m not worried and we will be in this thing at the end.

Not because of the reference to what first looked like a horrible injury to Matty Ice but for the “ruined pairs of underwear” comment. If something like that happened to Drew, I’m sure our black and gold underwear would then have shades of brown. That looked very scary. I’m glad Ryan wasn’t seriously injured because I’d hate for Falcons fans to claim that as the reason they lost the division.

I'm starting to see possibly a little decline
Maybe we just hold Drew to too high a standard. He’s only human and will make mistakes from time to time. That said, some of his throws yesterday had me scratching my head. I’m mostly thinking of those two short passes to receivers that were completely covered. One of them was the Barber INT. Not sure why he tried to force those.
I’m not ready to declare a definite decline just yet though. He’s still making way more good decisions than bad. He threw some bad balls in 2009 too, but we choose to not remember those.

No, no, no
I’m not saying he’s in decline just yet. Just saying those two passes and the Devery bomb miss weren’t pretty. Three bad passes outta 36 doesn’t mean he’s in decline. Tom Brady threw a lot more bad passes yesterday. Does that mean he’s also in decline? No way to know if Drew is in a long slow decline right now until he retires, which I hope is many, many years from now.

I'm onboard the decline bandwagon.
He’s clearly gone from being the best player in the league to only being in the 99th percentile.
"I want to hand this trophy to the MVP of the Super Bowl -- and the MVP of the entire league.''

Is he declining? Probably. But if he keeps declining at this pace, he’ll be good until he’s 40.

Just my opinion, but I think Ryan has been coddled too much and that's his problem.
What I mean by that is that the coaches have tried not to put much pressure on him going back a few seasons and now they are trying to let him play like a “full NFL QB.” instead of being cautious and relying on Turner and Snelling. Which means he could be turning the corner and achieving his full potential with some groewing pains – we’ll have to see. Just my opinion
QUESTION: an injuury that is not getting much attention it seems is your FB- Mughvalli (sorry- too lazy to check real spelling). I thought he was a very good FB and his loss is significant. I know that Snelling can fill in, but I thought your running game was stronger when Mug played FB and Snelling spelled or alternated with Turner. What do you think?

Mughelli is definitely a loss
The Falcons are extremely lucky to have Jason Snelling as a sort of fullback hybrid, as well as Mike Cox to handle your average blocking duties. They’re just not as good as Mughelli, though.

I'm interested to see how Sproles will do against the Falcons
I’m always more than a little bewildered when opposing DEFs let him go unchecked into the flats (ahem, Bucs).
I honestly can’t believe how effective he’s been for the Saints, and I’m wondering when the time comes that a DEF matches a bigger corner on him when he’s in the game. If I didn’t know better, it’s almost as if DC’s are willing to let Sproles do anything he wants as long as they keep him underneath.
Personally
I’m more worried about him catching passes out of the backfield than anything else. That seems to be our weak point. Always worried about the big play from WRs, and leaving the check down wide open.

I think the secret to Matte failure is.............
a really good Pass rush with contaiment on the edges. Refering to the “Happy Feet”. Is this true ? I dont think he handles pressure very well so" bringing the House" should be very effective. True ???
My Magnificent Black and Gold Warriors
Typically in Ryans career the numbers have suggested
He handles 5+ men rushes very well, it’s the 4 man blitzes that make him jumpy. The only thing I can attribute this to is in a 4 man rush there are more men in coverage so he’s trying to get men open and he starts freaking out when he holds on to the ball too long. When he knows he’s being blitzed he usually does a good job taking care of the ball. It’s an oddity.

Does anyone really care about this elite business? Just another ridiculous qualifier for fans to rub their fan boners out to.
Additionally, despite what Greg Cosell says, I think many NFL GMs would take Matt Ryan’s first few years over what Brees’ accomplished to that point in his career.

Brees was, at best, an average quarterback for his first three seasons
He really broke out in his fourth season, put together back-to-back terrific years and then headed to New Orleans.
Looking at his numbers, though, I was struck by something: The whole “Brees never throws picks” meme is weird. He’s only twice thrown less than 15 interceptions in a season. Does nothing to diminish his greatness, but I found that interesting.

Thank you.
He throws a lot of interceptions. He has some bad luck (receivers tipping the ball, defenses making great plays) and he has the bone headed decisions. This has been the same for his entire career, yet when he does the same thing at age 32 that he did at age 27, he’s in decline.

I thought he looked, if not poor, then below average. Where’s the pinpoint accuracy? The ball was everywhere.
Bring back Aaron Brooks! He's the only one who can save us from the evil that is Drew Brees!!

I recall something being said about
his play or one of his passes “Smelling like dead minnows” or something similar. I believe that was the same discussion also.

Lot of comments got deleted when him and Drew-dat got into it. However, this didn't:
From a Packer fan
I don’t know what game you just watched "objectively" but I know the one I watched had TWO elite QB’s in it.
Now before you come back with your snide sentence saying how an "objective" analysis will show Brees wasn’t good, or is in decline, or some other nonsense I’ve seen you spout before let’s get a couple things straight:
1. I am not in hero worship of Drew Brees.
2. I have no benefit to telling you how good Brees played tonight.
3. I was cheering for the other team tonight so when I tell you that Brees played well it’s because he played pretty damn well.
Now that’s settled let’s look to see what exactly you’ve thrown out to show that Brees didn’t play well besides your conclusion:
………(crickets chirping in the background)………….
Now let’s go over and see what Drew Brees did well tonight:
1. As has been pointed out he led his team to 34 points against a pretty damn good defense (only defense better last year was Pittsburgh and they still looked pretty good tonight despite your offense shredding us).
2. Threw for 300+ yards against one of the most talented secondaries in the league.
3. Was able to move and slide in the pocket countless times in order to buy time and make things happen.
4. Ran an effective two minute drill to set his team up for a chance to tie the game late in a hostile environment.
5. Did just about everything he could to make a SECOND effective two minute drill.
If all that’s not enough for you to see that he’s an elite QB and one the top 5 in the league easy I really don’t know what is.

nice touch
No link. I had to look it up myself. I don’t remember that. I think somebody hacked my account. Would you like to see my underpants now? Here you go.
Ok, guilty. I was for the decline before I was against it.

Welcome to the party, we're all just papers in the wind
What's up Dave
He does throw Int’s yes. Any QB who throws over 400 yards and 40 to 60 passes a game consistently, Int’s will increase.
Look forward to the wild matchup on Sunday. I’m just hoping Dr Jeckyll shows up.
I spent 8 years trying to reach him...and then another 7 trying to keep him locked up because I realized what was living behind that boy's eyes was purely and simply...Evil.
Dr. Sam Loomis Aka (Donald Pleasence)
Yeah, I don't knock him down for throwing the INTs
I just think it’s funny that people were wringing their hands over his interception totals last year when it’s not out of whack with his career numbers.
Gonna be a hell of a game.

(San Diego) and their coaching has been questionable

Get a little worried sometimes
but when the O-line blocked like it did the first 4 games, I don’t think Brees, Rodgers, Brady could have played very well either.
I think Matt’s issues come down to protection and trying to force the ball to a certain recevier. When Matt can start spreading the ball around instead of targeting Roddy or Julio for 50% of his pass plays a game, he will get better.

made the Pro Bowl at least once…….

I'm pretty sure that was the year mister cheap shot John Lynch his shoulder
And through out the whole broadcast last week Lynch kept questioning late hits by the Saints is that hypercritical or what
I watch gone with the wind atleast once a month just to fast forward to the part where they burn Atlanta

What do you think the chances of the Falcons winning are?
Personally, I think 65%. I don’t have faith in the Saints to win on the road anymore.

Keep the faith
We have only had one debacale on the road. We played both GB and the Bucs close at home. I’m now of the part of the small group who thinks the Rams game may, I repeat may, have been a blessing in disguise. If it took an ugly game in St. Louis, to get the attention of Payton and the rest of the coaches, then I’m now OK with it. If we revert to no running game, and blown protections, of our QB then I’m rant with the rest of you again. I just can’t stay negative. It’s not my nature.

“may have been a blessing in disguise”
I agree.
I just wish we would have remembered the “blessing” we got vs. the Cowgirls in 2009.
They saw what happened when they didn’t adjust to the “wide 9”. Did they (like me) block that game out of their memory and game tapes?
No need to replay… that was mainly a re-rant about the Rams and Girls game.
I'd say we have a better than 50% chance
of winning this. The Falcons are not the team they were last year. We are capable of winning, it’s just a question of which Saints team shows up.

I agree with this, because I think they’re getting better.
They are getting better...
at losing. I kid, sort of ;)

I'd say that's about right
I think they’ll take this one and drop the one in New Orleans.

Me too.
Both teams are likely to wind up around 12-4. I don’t know what the tiebreakers are, but I hope they go in our favor of course.

Dave, your Falcons, in their losses this year
got spanked by the Bears on opening day
lost by a FG @ Tampa
and then
lost to Green Bay in Hotlanta by 11
Have their been any consistent trends in the losses that the Saints might be able to exploit in sneaking out of there with a win?
WIN NOW

In all three, strong passing performances and tough defense
I know that’s pretty general, but you guys can probably pull that off. Assuming you can stop Turner.

OK, I'll send a tweet to Sean Payton, Pete Carmichael and Gregg Williams
And Dave, you’d better watch out for Sean Payton coaching from the booth – rumor is he kinda feels like Zeus on Mt. Olympus up there…

Is it true
that falcon meat is so dry that you are better off making into a stew than frying it?

Ship. Think of it like this -
The “actions” tab is the accelerator pedal.
The “reply” tab is the brake pedal.
If you see something you’d like to reply to, hit the brakes.
You’re welcome.

OMG
First it was a “politics in general” hall monitor that writes about pol sightings in his posts, now it’s a reply button hall monitor.
And I still don’t know whether it’s better to fry my bird or screw it.
Falcons themselves are considered raptors. They are predatory birds that have strong light muscles. With that being so, I would imagine that they have little fat to add to the tenderness of the meat. In such case, I would imagine that tossing the bird in the crock pot and letting it stew over night would be the best bet
