I have made it known that I haven't cared for Gregg Williams for quite some time and he still hasn't change my negative perception of his play calling skills. The Titans game today was painful to endure. It just blows my mind that the season is winding to a close and I am still complaining about the exact same things since week one. I hate to tell any supporters of GW that are reading this, but our defensive scheme sucks and it seems to suck even harder at the worse possible times. "But the defense held on 4th and Inches today just like it did in Atlanta" says the GW faithful. Screw the 4th and Inches argument!!! We should have never been in that position in the first place. I'm not giving GW's defense a pass just because they held up on one play. Where the hell were they the rest of the game? Where the hell are they in every game? I"m not calling out our players like it sounds, Im' calling out this horrible blitzing scheme that GW continues to call every week. Our defensive players are not being put in the best position to win games. GW is not calling plays based on our players' strengths, he is doing the exact opposite and putting all of them in vulnerable positions. Take todays game for example. I think we can all agree that Nate Washington was the Titans' best receiver coming into this game, correct? Well don't you think that we would cover him with a cornerback on every down? Well apparently GW thought that Washington's ankle injury caused him not to be taken seriously and a LB was repeatedly asked to cover the guy. A LB on their BEST WR. Doesn't make sense does it? Go back and watch Will Herring (Yeah Herring) try to cover this guy. It's pretty laughable. We probably could have covered him with a CB if we weren't sacrificing players to the almighty GW blitz.
I know our D-line has not gotten QB pressure all year. I understand that we have to bring a blitz to get pressure on the QB. But we don't have to bring it on every down. Our LB's are not athletic and lack speed. They are not blitzing LB's but they are asked to be. What happens? They fail to get into the backfield repeatedly. It almost becomes comedic to watch them bounce of the offensive line, get stopped stone cold, or just fail to get to the QB because they aren't fast enough. Ok that doesn't work so what does the almighty GW do next? He brings DB's on the blitz and forces our non athletic LB's into coverage on WR's. As you can see we are completely screwed on both previously mentioned situations. Either we bring LB's and get burned on short dump offs or we bring DB's and get beat on deep balls. Well since we continually get screwed in both of those situations, why not go to a coverage scheme and just forget about blitzing so often to bring pressure. We can still blitz occasionally but to blitz this much, with consistent negative results is just plain counter productive. Who knows what will happen if our line is given a little bit more time before the ball is released. I would prefer just to focus on coverage and see if the added coverage could give our D-line the chance to step up and get some coverage sacks.
