Ask The Falcoholic: First Blood Part II

A Monday night game. A win for the Saints gives you guys the division. A win for the Falcons gives them a playoff berth. It's the biggest game of the year.

So here I am, dispensing my usual brand of folksy Falcons wisdom. Wanna know about Michael Turner's recent slowdown? Why, sure! Gotta hear about Sean Weatherspoon? You betcha! Want to know why the Falcons are better than they were last time our two teams played? I'll make an unconvincing argument!

As usual, please Recommend this so it will remain up at the top for those who wish to ask questions/harass me.

Here's to the usual fantastic game!

This game is going to be epic.

I’m looking forward to it. So how is Atlanta better than the last time?

by rustdog74 on Dec 19, 2011 8:58 AM CST reply actions

They've sort of settled on an identity

Which is a very good defensive team with a deep passing game that’s finally clicking. With Julio Jones healthy and Roddy White playing well again, they’ve got a strike capability they lacked earlier in the season. And that defense is the best they’ve had since the ’90’s.

Admittedly this is just over the last couple of games, so it’s probably too early to be as optimistic as I am. Ah well.

Love your creativity in the Title Dave

Like Rustdog said, this game is going to be epic. And to tell you the truth, it’s scary to see your team getting hot recently. Julio and Roddy are playing like they’re supposed too. I will admit it, your team is pretty darn scary.

I would like to see both A games duke it out Monday night. No penalties, no turnovers, no sloppiness. With a win of course. Look forward to another coronary type of game between the two.

Unfortunately, chances are good that won't happen

These teams force mistakes. I fully expect a couple of fumbles and bumbles along the way.

I totally agree.

And it’s always down to the wire with seconds left between the two. You never know the outcome of Saints/Falcons games. I’m just hoping it’s not us that has those fumbles. They’ll probably be a turnover or 2 between both teams.

I think (with all due respect) the only way for a Falcon victory is to get a large lead and keep it

which is unlikely, but could happen. I say this because the crowd will be so pumped, a major comeback/ 4th qtr heroics are going to be a tough chore on the road in a loud dome.

What Falcon injuries are going to factor in?

If Brent Grimes isn't healthy, that will hurt

Given that he’s the team’s closest thing to a shutdown corner and he’s picked Drew Brees three or four times over the last couple of years. Other than that, they should be healthy.

The key is going to be the defense. They’ve been superb this year—top five against the run, top seven in points allowed—but the secondary is still a little dicey. If they can’t get after Brees and completely shut down the run, it could be a long day.

Not really.

There are just too many weapons on the Saints right now. Now granted I’m going to enjoy the game a lot more if you guys are missing your best corners and Drew just lights you up for 500+ yards and 6 or 7 TDs in a 30 point blowout.

But if you’re counting on your corners, it won’t be enough. Even Grimes won’t be able to handle Jimmy. Not solo, at least. Then you add in Colston, Lance, the way Meachem is actually looking like a semi-competent receiver, Henderson, Sproles, PT, Collins, and oh if that’s not enough there’s always Gilmore, Korey Hall, Ingram, Ivory and maybe even Roby. And every last one of them Drew is capable of getting the ball to as needed.

Now if your DL can step up and get in Drew’s face, THAT would give you a chance. In fact, it would give you a really good chance. So I’m hoping very much either your DL can’t or our OL can also step up and keep him clean. But if you get about five sacks and force about 5 to 10 rushed throws, you’ll get some INTs and 3-and-outs and such.

But it still won’t be because your best corners played.

by FriarBob on Dec 20, 2011 2:33 PM CST up reply actions

I can't really argue with that

Needless to say, I’m nervous. The pass rush has been inconsistent all year long.

by BlackandGold4ever on Dec 20, 2011 3:02 PM CST up reply actions

Jerry's the big disappointment

Other than him, there’s really no high draft picks from the current regime. The closest thing is Corey Peters, who was drafted in the third round and is a premier run stopper.

We don’t have a pass rush either. Our leader is Roman harper with 7.5.

As a bonus, only Adrian Wilson of the 2005 Cardinals has a higher sack total by a safety in a season with 8…We may have a defensive record this year in addition to the offensive sweep.

I'm confident they can limit the run

Obviously less confident about Brees. No sane human being is going to tell you that they can stop him with the way he’s playing now. A handful of sacks and a couple of turnovers are their best shot.

THe thing about the run is that we barely even scratched the surface last time, 16 carries for 41 yards is barely enough to provide a quality sampling of what the Saints run game can do. What I believe is that last game we attacked the average passing defense without really trying to run the ball, aside from keeping your pass rush and LBs honest in coverage. I assume it will be a similar deal this week. I mean we have gashed several top ten rushing defenses so if the saints wanted to run the ball, especially with Strief back and the O line seemingly healthy, we could. I think the real question will be how healthy are your DB’s, in reality, and how often can the saints get open in the pass game. To sum up my babbling, I don’t think the Atlanta defense necessarily ‘shut down’ our running game last meeting, although 2.9 ypc is abysmal, I truly believe we just avoided it all together and went after the pass Defense which is much less menacing.

After saying all of this I realize that, technically, that is shutting down our run game because we didn’t even really try to break into it.

I feel like we can run on anyone since we have 4 backs that all offer a different style and all do a great job

and for the most part are very versatile. We shall see, though.

I think you'll have more success with Sproles than, say, Ingram/Ivory

The Falcons have had the bulk of their issues stopping the run off the edge. It’s just very, very difficult to run up the middle on them, and they’re fourth in the league in yardage allowed because of it. But they’ve really had no trouble containing most backs.

The Falcons have arguably gotten better since the last time these two teams played, and last time, the Saints only managed 41 yards on 15 carries. It’s gonna be on Brees.

Don’t forget that the saints also have shut down some pretty good rushing attacks recently, what I mean to say is that our D has also gotten better. Although Fat boy Turner always seems to have a decent game, generally speaking. Probably because of his size and strength. Hard to match up against a Jerome Bettis style runner.

I'm remembering another Monday Night game between the two of us,

Hi, Dave. Yes the Falcons seem to have found their grove as of late. Do you really think they can control Drew Bressss, with the way he is currently playing. Our Defense seems to be stepping up it’s play now also. I think both Julio, and Rodney, are playing better also, but have they really gotten over their case of the dropsies. Can the Burner, burn our new and improved D-line play? As always here’s to a great game, with no injuries. Of course with us having Greater play.

I'm not confident in stopping Brees

How could anyone be? He’s the second best quarterback in the NFL this season, and in the second half he’s arguably been the best. I can’t sit here with a straight face and tell you the Falcons can contain him. It’ll give me nightmares for the rest of the week.

I think both guys are “over” the drops, but that doesn’t mean they won’t bobble a pass or two. It’s part of their games. They have made enormous strides, however, and Julio in particular is a deadly deep threat.

I wouldn’t worry that much about Turner. He’s slowing down at this point, and while he’ll still be effective, he’s basically there to set up the pass right now.

Yeah I can agree here. I’m not worried about the Saints scoring, Saints passing/rushing attack or the Atlanta running game as much as I’m worried about you guys scoring in the pass game. The saints have showed weakness in deep coverage, man to man coverage and, as we saw last hotlanta game with Douglas, crappy zone coverage. It’s very possible that the fast tempo offense that you guys were running confused the defense, it would probably confuse most defenses, but hopefully if situations like that arise again, someone will call a timeout and the saints can regroup. The man and deep coverage we will have to just pray, its certainly our pass D that is the weakness of the team right now.

Bah.

You preempted my question about Turner. It always seems he wears down near the end of the year (likely due to the massive workloads he takes on during the season). Was wondering if that was the case again this year. I’m sure he’ll show up and rip at least one big rush off though. I just hope it happens when it doesn’t really matter and not at a critical spot in the game.

I'm with you on the Colts game,

but not so much the Vikings game. If we had made those mistakes (fumbles, etc.) early on against a team like Atlanta, I feel like that game would’ve played out a lot differently. Props to the defense for minimizing that damage, but I hope to god the coaching staff still gave the team hell over that ugly start despite the beatdown we put on the Vikes the rest of that game.

Actually simply chalk it up to playing an OLB in a 4-3. When people vote for Pro Bowl…99% look at sack numbers for OLB. He can obviously still make the Pro Bowl based on the other 2/3 of the vote from players and coaches etc.

The Falcons would be smart to put William Moore on him, given his extreme physicality and speed. He’ll be tough to stop, though.

I’m less concerned about Sproles, though he’s still obviously a weapon. As a runner he’s not going to have a ton of luck against the Falcons’ front runner, and as a pass catcher he’ll cause a ton of headaches but isn’t as big a concern to me as say Graham or Colston.

You guys completely shut Sproles down last game. I would expect it to continue. Saints don’t run block well, and you guys are great against the run. I expect it to be similar to last game where we barely ran the ball and when we did we averaged something pathetic like 2.5 a rush.

I agree

That this run D is better than just about any we’ve faced. But I also think that our run game has, for the most part, been improving over the past month or so. I also concur that it’s going to rest on Brees to win this for us, but I am really curious to see how our runners perform. Should be a good litmus test and give us some idea of what they can do against a stout run D (got the Niners floating around in the back of my head).

by Jimbo03 on Dec 22, 2011 10:34 AM CST up reply actions

And so how is present reality working out for you now? You still living in a world where our O-line can’t run block? I’d say 23 carries for 164 yards (7.1 ypc) is pretty good against a top five run defense.

Normally, I wouldn’t come around after the fact, but just felt the need to after being told to learn what I am talking about. Did you learn much about our offensive line and running game last night?

you should look closer at the stats

our 4 backs average these ypc :

Sproles 6.5
PT 5.0 while Turner averages 4.1
Ingram 3.9
Ivory 4.1 Falcons other RBs average 3.8 and 2.9

So, that means Turner would be tied for 3rd in our lineup. Maybe 4th (since our O-line "hasn’t been very impressive). Also, our 4 RBs have run for about 1650 yds. Turner etal approx 1400. So, we run for more yards on average, and overall also. And that is with Ivory coming back and just getting back into form after missing half a season. And that’s with a team that emphasis (and sets records) passing the ball.

Don’t know what makes you think our O-Line is not impressive in the run game. Note to Jeff- a team cannot have the top ranked offense without an awesome O-Line. It all starts there. It all happens there.

Since when does this discussion have anything to do what so ever with the Falcons running game? Oh yea…it doesn’t. And with the exception of Sproles, our backs are averaging….well…average. And since I consider them all to be slightly above average backs…that leads me to believe the line isn’t always doing it’s job. Hell…Bush runs for 200 yards as a Dolphin…what did he ever do running for us? Oh yea…now he has things called “holes”.

PT is averaging 5.0 ypc- that's excellent by NFL standards

and for Ingram, a rookie who gets the workhorse assignments, to average 3.9 especially when a lot of his carries are 3rd and 1 and 3rd and goal from the 2 or simliar, and Ivory is a sophmore who missed preseason and half of the regular season. Well, I think all that adds up to an impressive O-Line that almost any team in the league would be happy to have. Our two top backs averaging 5.0 and 6.5 ypc- that’s epic! But, I guess we differ. You think PT and Sproles are doing that all by themselves. I don’t.

honestly, I know you know more about football than that

that’s why I guy like Arian Foster only averages a little more or a little less than Ben Tate- because 85% is done by the line. Without blocking, even Gale Sayers would never get a first down.

Actually it’s because Ben Tate is almost as good of a back if not potentially better than Foster. That’s why they drafted him to be their RB of the future last year before the ankle injury.

What are you smoking?

Ben Tate is good, but he’s nowhere near Foster. Just watch the two of them and see if Tate can make any of the hesitation moves leading into an accelerated burst past the defenders like Foster does.

by BlackandGold4ever on Dec 20, 2011 11:19 AM CST up reply actions

He’s part right. They did draft Tate expecting him to be what Foster has become. But his injury problems prevented it.

by FriarBob on Dec 20, 2011 2:35 PM CST up reply actions

They drafted him with that intent, but this is what caught my eye:

bq.Ben Tate is almost as good of a back if not potentially better than Foster

I live just outside of Houston and don’t have DirecTV, so I wind up watching a lot of Texans games. What I have seen leads me to think that Arian Foster is a franchise RB, while Ben Tate is just a solid RB.

by BlackandGold4ever on Dec 20, 2011 2:59 PM CST up reply actions

Oh I’m not really going to disagree with you. Foster does appear to be the better back by far and definitely is the better fantasy option without a doubt.

But I was pointing out that the expectations were very high for Tate. And if he’s truly healthy now, then you’re completely right, he’s a dud. I’m not really sure he’s ever recovered from that injury that wiped out last year, however. But if he’s not, I’d also doubt that he ever will, either.

by FriarBob on Dec 20, 2011 3:37 PM CST up reply actions

846 yards on 153 carries at a 5.5 yard clip is a bust? Sign that bust up for our team please, I’ll take him in a heartbeat.

by jeff.l.b on Dec 20, 2011 3:57 PM CST up reply actions

There’s a difference between a “bust” and a “dud”.

A “bust” is a complete waste of a draft pick, totally useless, and out of the league in three or four years (or at least on your second or third team, and barring a miraculous turnaround on the way out the door for them as well).

A dud simply means you didn’t meet the expectations. Bush was a dud, not a bust. So was Tate.

by FriarBob on Dec 20, 2011 5:09 PM CST up reply actions

I cannot see in any way shape or form where you could label Tate a dud. He’s accomplished absolutely everything that’s been asked of him and in fairly impressive fashion. You can’t fault him for the freak injury last season. This season he’s more than accomplished any expectations that could be put forward for a RB. Especially with his limited carries. If he had those same stats on our team…you and everyone else would be calling him the second coming of Deuce. If Foster’s injury had been year long…and you look at what Tate’s done…his additional numbers would easily be putting him in the top 5 in the league in rushing. As it is he’s STILL in the top 20 as a backup for goodness sakes and averaging better than every single back in the NFL who qualifies in the top 40 with the notable exception of Darren Sproles. The numbers simply do not back up your argument in the least.

-Lombardi was wrong...it's the internet, not fatigue that makes cowards of us all. But then again, what do you expect. Not like the guy could see the future.

by jeff.l.b on Dec 20, 2011 5:43 PM CST up reply actions

You are missing half of the story, though. Go look at the receiving numbers for Tate and Foster and you’ll notice a drastic difference. And I still say that if you watch each of them run, Tate is not in the same class of RBs as Foster.

by BlackandGold4ever on Dec 21, 2011 7:40 AM CST up reply actions

Zone blocking

is a beautiful thing if you have the personnel to do it. I’d like to see Tate operate on a different team. I like him, personally, but it’s kind of like those back from the Broncos back when they had that wicked zone blocking system running at a high level. You could put anyone back there and they’d get 100 yards. He’s definitely good, but I think that system makes any back look good if it’s run properly, and it’s definitely run properly in Houston.

Either way you look at it, The falcons pass D will probably be doubling up on Graham and have a hard time matching against the Saint’s receivers. If they put Grimes and a safety on Graham then we will see a heavy dose of Meachem/Colston/Moore, at least whoever is drawing your nickle back or safety at the time. If the route is short and they put Grimes and a LB on Graham then quick out to Sproles or PT for the screen. Again, we will have similar problems on our side. Certainly glad we are playing in New Orleans this time.

I’ll concede there have been some bad calls (penalties on clean hits, phantom late hits, etc) but when they’re looking for a reason to throw a flag, don’t hand one to them on a platter. But I have seen some dusty play going on, and no, I don’t like it at all. It diminishes what the team accomplishes and my respect for the players.

That said, I don’t believe there was a whistle at TN and I seriously doubt AP’s ankle was purposefully twisted, if at all.

I think NFL fans across the nation will enjoy this game no matter who wins

Saints and Falcons always play each other with no holds barred.

As far as Saints and Falcons fans though: only a crushing defeat of the other team will be enjoyable. I remember telling Ricky Jackson (years before the dome patrol days) when I was a boy, “I don’t care if y’all don’t win another game all year, just beat Atlanta.”

Hell, if I was offered these options:

1) The Saints get beat by the Falcons twice but make it to the Superbowl.

2) The Saints beat the snot out of the Falcons twice but do not make it to the Superbowl.

I would have to choose beating the Falcons. I would choose having the Saints defense hitting them so hard they knock snot bubbles out of em. Damm the penalties full speed ahead! I want a highlight reel of Saints receivers embarrassing the Falcon’s defensive backs. One that gives me a woodie every time I watch it over and over and over again. Embarrass the Falcon’s players so much that they have to seek professional therapy during the off-season. A beat-down of epic proportions! Mass hysteria, dogs and cats living together….well you get the picture.

Me watching highlights:

Hmm well I mostly agree… but I might be able to tolerate a split after we win the Super Bowl. Losing to them twice? Only if in one of them we were resting our starters because we’d already clinched homefield advantage.

hey Dan - the stats are even more skewed if you limit our RBs to Sproles and PT

it’s somewhere betwen 6.5 ypc (Sproles) and 5.0 ypc (PT) which means technically you should never need to pass- run on 1st down with Sproles and it will then be 2nd and 3.5 and then PT will get you 1.5 more yards than you need- and then repeat. And then repeat again. If you struggle one play then run 3 times (or 4) for the 1st down.

:-) if it were only that easy.

The blocking for running is different than passing, and running on every down would certainly wear out the o-line.

(I’m not saying we couldn’t run a little more, but every down is a bit much.)

by Dan Kelly on Dec 20, 2011 7:29 PM CST up reply actions

and...

the problem with averages is that the actual, individual runs could vary widely.

One 32 yard run and four 2 yard runs AVERAGES out to be 4 yards/carry…

if you ran those consecutively… you’d get one first down and one turnover on downs.

by Dan Kelly on Dec 20, 2011 7:33 PM CST up reply actions

Plus you have to frame the context of each of the runs for those backs when looking at the averages. It isn’t like they line up Sproles on first down every drive and give him the ball. Same goes for PT, Ivory, and Ingram. Our offense is very versatile and that is what allows for those high YPC.

I have two questions for you, Mr. Choate....

(…stifles giggle at the word “Choate”)

1) would you prefer Brees break Dan Marino’s record in the third quarter, or go ahead and finish it off before halftime, using the “bandaid” rule of the faster.you pull it off the less.it hurts?

2) more of a request than a question – but do you think the Falcons fans and players can manage to not turn into whiny little girls when the Saints finish stomping a mud hole in ‘em Monday? Let’s try to maintain the reputation of the NFC South, and not besmirch it as the Barneys and their fans have done to the NFC North (…and conversely, if the impossible happens, and our beloved Saints fall to you evil filthy turkeys, we promise to show the same class and restraint).

In all seriousness, here’s.to a great game and no one getting injured on either side….and the Failcants goin’ home safe but sad at losing the division! ;-)

No giggles allowed

1) I think he won’t break the record this week. I think he’ll throw for about 250-280 yards and easily pass it in Week 17. That is also my fervent hope.

2) I think the players can manage. The fans….yes?

That will happen ONLY if our entire OL takes the week off. Which it could. It did for the Browns game in 2010, after all.

But otherwise, Drew will at least pass the 300 yard mark. Whether that will lead to the win we all desperately want (well, aside from Dave the Falconer, but he doesn’t count) or not remains to be seen.

I actually think you're likely to win this one

But that Drew won’t have 300 yards. That’s my prediction.

But given the number of free agents coming up, I can’t imagine they’ll have the cap space to get it done.

I am not totally sold on the Panthers yet. I think Newton is going to have to become a much better passer or else he’ll be fighting injuries all the time. It is one thing to absorb all of those hits and run all the time as a rookie, but try doing it for 3-5 years and see how well he holds up.

by BlackandGold4ever on Dec 21, 2011 3:06 PM CST up reply actions

Probably true. But on the other hand, we know they have a good defensive mind in their HC. I mean, he consistently shut down Manning in their games despite some rather average talent back in SD. Right now he has a defense that makes ours look elite. But if he can upgrade the talent around there to even merely decent on that side of the ball, I wouldn’t be surprised if Cam doesn’t NEED to improve quite so much anymore.

by FriarBob on Dec 21, 2011 4:38 PM CST up reply actions

What surprises me is

The Panthers have been known as a Big on D, and Run first team. I told all the Cam haters and critics that he was going to be a lot better than they were trying to make him out to be. I said he instantly made them a better team. Back to what surprises me is the fact that their D has been so bad Since Fox was fired. If Cam gets some receivers to complement Steve and their D comes together, they will be another legtimate thread in our division again.

You have to remember they lost their best defender for the season before it even began. You can’t just lose people like Jon Beason without it showing.

But given how close every game has been over the last three seasons, it’s kind of ridiculous to think the Saints are suddenly going to drop 40 points on the Falcons and hold them to 10.

I wouldn't go that far.

Generally speaking most of the people here feel we’ll win every game every year. Frankly I think you guys win this game. Honestly I HOPE you win this game because I 100% believe the 49ers win out locking in the 2 seed. That way we beat Carolina and if we see you in the playoffs there will be that much more incentive to win with the team taking the stance of not letting you beat us twice in our own building in the same year. If we win this game and meet you in the playoffs….we’d face the dreaded 3 wins in one year scenario…which history seems to dictate as being a slim to none chance…at least from memory.

I should fix that…I don’t hope you win…i never want to lose…but at the same time…it just feels like that is the way it’s going. Of course I’m one of the few fans that lives in perpetual fear and flash backs of the late 70s, early 80s, mid to late 90s versions of the Saints.
