New Orleans Saints Offensive Player Grades vs. Falcons

Sean to Drew: "If you were Kenny Chesney I'd kiss you right now."

While the night belonged to Drew Brees for breaking Dan Marino's record in the Saints 45-16 win over the Falcons, the group I want to commend after this masterful performance is the offensive line and the running backs.

The Falcons entered this game fourth overall in the NFL defending the run and the Saints positively manhandled them. The Falcons are fortunate the Saints had a passing record to achieve, because otherwise the Saints could have easily reached 200 yards on the ground, if not more.

There was simply nothing this statistically solid unit could do against the Saints' power running. Whether it was Sproles, Ivory and/or Thomas, it didn't really matter. Whoever was fed the ball was gashing the Falcons. Part of that was the runners for sure, but a huge part of that was the incredible blocking all night long.

The Falcons never stood a chance against the Saints' physicality, and that's what's most scary to me about this offense. We already knew Brees could throw, but if they can run the ball like this, too? Goodnight! 23 carries for 164 yards, or 7.1 yards per carry. Wow!

On to the grades...

Falcons vs Saints recap

Falcons vs Saints boxscore

Star-divide

Drew Brees: B+ (3.51) Overall he played very well, but he wasn't as sharp in this game as he's been the last 5-6 weeks. Part of that, I have no doubt, was the distraction of the record. Brees made some dangerous throws he normally doesn't make and he was very fortunate about three more passes weren't picked off. He also tried to call a timeout coming out of a timeout, which got him a delay of game penalty. Not his finest hour. He finished 23 for 39 for 309 yards, 4 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. The first interception was just bad luck on a bounce, though the second was a poor decision into double coverage that was also tipped before being intercepted. Of course among the poor plays I mention were the usual ridiculous plays that I take for granted by now. Not that I'm not continually amazed by Brees or that I assume it'll always happen, but for the sake of this write up it's just easier to affirm he's awesome without getting too descriptive, otherwise this would just get insanely long. After this game Brees' completion percentage is down to 70.7%. His previous record in 2009 was 70.62% so he's got very little margin for error if he wants to break his own record as well this season.

Darren Sproles: A (3.20) He ran for 67 yards on just 5 carries, he had two receptions for 22 yards and the touchdown which broke Marino's record, and he also broke a kickoff return for 92 yards and set up a field goal on a drive that stalled. He did a little bit of everything and contributed in many ways.

Pierre Thomas: A- (3.11) He made the most of his touches, yet again. Have you heard me say that before? 53 yards on 9 carries, 1 touchdown, and 2 catches for 4 yards. The only negative is he didn't contribute in the passing game like he sometimes does. He also had a very stupid penalty for using a bow as a prop, sticking it on the football, and giving it to a fan as a present. Funny celebration, but stupid.

Chris Ivory: B (2.73) He ran with good authority and finished with 35 yards on 8 carries. He likely would have had a chance to pound the ball more and run the clock at the end if it wasn't for Brees trying to break Marino's record. He was stuffed in a short yardage situation but I thought he ran the best he has so far this season overall finishing his runs nicely and playing to the whistle. He seemed to fall forward and was tougher to bring down than previous games. Good to see him hitting his stride right before the playoffs. At this point I wonder what role Mark Ingram will have come playoff time?

Jed Collins: B (2.71) Good blocking when he was in, though he didn't get a ton of snaps most likely due to the ridiculous amount of penalties he's been getting lately. Still, when he was in, he did a good job.

Marques Colston: B+ (3.23) He led the Saints in receiving with 7 catches for 81 yards and a touchdown. Per usual he moved the sticks, gave Brees a target underneath, but he also stretched the field and gave the Saints a vertical option. The only negative is he dropped two very catchable balls.

Lance Moore: B (3.00) He had 2 catches for 53 yards and seemed to be on his way to another explosive performance before he had to leave with a tweak of his hamstring. Hopefully it's not serious, but I think it's a given he's probably sitting out next week in an attempt to get ready for the playoffs.

Robert Meachem: B+ (2.49) He had 3 catches for 75 yards and a touchdown. He stretched the field, converted a huge 3rd down play, had a nice touchdown grab, and found himself wide open downfield a few times. He also surrendered and interception into double coverage but it's hard to blame him for that one.

Devery Henderson: C+ (2.31) He had 3 catches for 30 yards but he also had 2 drops. Neither drop was an easy catch but he could have helped his cause, and the offense, by bringing those in.

Jimmy Graham: B (3.22) The Falcons were clearly terrified of him and did everything they could to stop him. Despite 9 targets he only had 4 catches for 42 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown was a jump ball where he once again showed off his red zone prowess. The first interception was a tip drill that went off his fingertips. In the end too many balls that went his way resulted in incompletions.

John Gilmore: B- (2.36) A solid day blocking giving the Saints nice size off the edge. He was not used at all in the passing game.

Jermon Bushrod: A- (2.76) The Falcons moved John Abraham around a good bit but the times Bushrod saw him he handled him appropriately. The Saints didn't run much to his side but the times they did he would spring the play open with a nice lead block. On the team's longest run by Sproles of 36 yards in particular, you'll see Bushrod doing his thing. A nice job blocking overall, though he did force Brees to step up in the pocket a few times.

Carl Nicks: A (2.82) He was back to his physical self mauling defenders any chance he got. His pass blocking in particular was very strong, but in this one he pulled often and was able to throw some nice lead blocks. He also helped his runners a number of times finish their runs with a nice surge at the end of the play.

Brian De La Puente: B+ (2.49) He bounced back from nothing short of a nightmarish outing against the Vikings last week. De La Puente blocked soundly and he contributed both pulling and in the trenches to the Saints' dominating interior performance. Give this guy credit, he's come in and made Olin Kreutz a distant memory. Not bad for a guy no one had ever heard about.

Jahri Evans: A (3.24) The Saints must have seen something on tape because almost all of their runs with very few exceptions ran behind Evans on the right guard runs. Obviously that proved successful as Evans had a tremendous night getting excellent push all night long.

Zach Strief: B+ (2.97) He was lined up against Abraham as much if not more than Bushrod and did an admirable job. Most impressive from Strief was the number of successful right side runs the Saints had where he did a good job sealing the edge to afford the runners an inside lane. He was flagged once for a blatant hold, but otherwise he did a good job of blocking. He's had an excellent season overall and I see no reason why he won't/can't be the Saints' starting right tackle for 2012 as well.

Pat McQuistan: B- (2.17) Like Gilmore, he did him job giving the Saints some size on the edge. Nice job.

Even with as big a night as Drew had

the O-line gets the vote, they are the real reason things went the way they did last night.

I voted OLine

With out them none of this would be possible on offense

I voted O-line also.

Bushrod sure has stepped up his game after having a few of us worried in the beginning.

I totally agree with your grades from a Fan point of view.......But

From an Atlanta point of view, they all get an A+. One of the plays that I got excited about was Shanley’s strip of Julio’s catch which resulted in a Touchdown. Reminded me of 09 and I miss that but maybe our Saints will again pick up on that critical part of the game from here on out..

I voted for Sproles

..because of his overall contributions.

I actually think this was one of Brees’ weakest performances, which shows how truly great a QB he is and how spoiled we all are. I swear he has eyes in all parts of his head, and his feel for the pass rush and his awareness of his options is second to none. The Saints are one of the few teams I have ever seen which look like they still have the advantage offensively after a holding call on first down.

My one quibble with the review was that at least one of the Henderson “drops” and one of the Colston “drops” were as much very good defensive plays as they were receiver mistakes. Sometimes the other guys deserve some credit.

I actually think this was one of Brees’ weakest performances,

And yet still passed for 4 TD’s and over 300 yards. That goes to show how deadly the guy is. We are blessed to have him. Should have been 5 TD’s. 1 int was due to Graham’s inability to tuck the ball in the endzone.

After the 2int’s. The Falcons failed to capitolize. And Brees bounced back angry after both int’s and prevailed. And the O’line? What a gift.

This game could have been a lot worse. That’s how dangerous we are!

I spent 8 years trying to reach him...and then another 7 trying to keep him locked up because I realized what was living behind that boy's eyes was purely and simply...Evil.

The offensive line did a great job.

But did you guys notice how well Drew moved around and got away in many situations and completed those passes? It’s a toss up between the line and Brees. The whole team is getting better each week and I don’t think any other team can keep up with us the way we’re playing. All the media keeps talking about that it will be rough for the Saints to play in Green Bay and it makes me laugh. The Saints won’t have to worry about Going to Green Bay because Green Bay will lose their first game after the bye.

by tommy v on Dec 27, 2011 1:29 PM CST reply actions

nice to see that everyone is realizing how good our O-Line is

when you can run and pass they way we can, that’s truly a testimonial to those guys. It’s all coming together for the O
-line..it took a little while to get that cohesion after adding DLP into the mix and moving on without Stinchcomb. But, they are hitting on all cylinders now.

I voted PT for his overall effort.

He made a lot of tough yards going up the middle. It seemed to me (no, Virginia, I do NOT have stats to back it up) that he made a lot of positive yards after contact.

As for Drew -

passed for 4 TD’s and over 300 yards

that's all you got, buddy???

I think the Saints’ running game was so good because the Falcons were expecting us to pass. They did force Brees under 60% in completion percentage, and came within 3 yards of denying him the record…so I guess you could say they were nearly successful with their game plan. If you call 45-16 and almost-total failure successful.

At any rate, if it isn’t Brees, it’s got to be the O-line, who opened holes and kept blitzers at bay the whole game. It would seem, taking into account some of the post-game comments, that our O-line adores Drew Brees, and would follow him to Hell and back. That’s good, because they’re probably going to have to follow him to San Francisco (which is a kind of hell), and maybe Lambeau as well.

Anyone know what kind of fine Lance Moore can expect for those socks?

Alot of people said that it was a stupid move by Pierre.

I loved it and thought it was very sincere. I wasn’t worried about that 15 yard penalty at all because I didn’t have to be worried with a kicker like Morstead. Think about it, after the 15 yard walk off, he still kicked the ball about where most other kickers would kick it without a penalty.

by tommy v on Dec 27, 2011 6:55 PM CST up reply actions

I suppose if 17 other kickers can’t get the ball to the endzone on a kickoff then most would be true. But I think most do get it TO the endzone now, just not all of them get it OUT of the endzone like he normally does.

why does it seem that juge is always unhappy with pierre's number of touches..?

i was noticing last night how fast/explosive all 3 runners were looking.. like shot out of cannons.. you can give all the “in rhythm” theories you want to.. but having the backs fresh and explosive has been working for this little offense of ours.. i see also a lot of wantto on every touch by all 3 backs..
i personally like this style of managing the RBs.. although a know that there’s few here that always whine about a certain player, of their particular preference.. they even whine about past players (like our coaching ruined their careers.. i know.. weird..)

by the 9th plague on Dec 27, 2011 7:02 PM CST reply actions

and there's this

now that Reggie Bush has moved along and secured an “every-down” back job that has allowed him to flourish this season as a 1000-yard RB, folks see what the Saints system is for what it is.

It’s going to be a RBBC (running back by committee) deal that is definitely NOT for everyone. If folks buy into it and want to be a part of this backfield, they understand what it is and isn’t, and if they don’t want to be a part of it, they can ride out their contract and then re-sign elsewhere/or look for a trade to get to a different system…

by Hans Petersen on Dec 28, 2011 5:26 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah PT will feel that way but considering where he came from, he should just chill and except his role for what it is. What’s his contract 3 years? I don’t remember.

But anyway, there’s nothing wrong with a player wanting to be better than a role player (Not saying you’re saying that Hans but some people are saying that). I hear that from time to time here and there as if wanting to be better than 5-10/carries a game is evil and the end-all to an unselfish players morale. We ignore the other side of the coin. The other side of the coin is that this is a business just as much as it is a game.

These players are individuals and have worked their whole lives trying to achieve a dream. Dreams and goals evolve. For some it’s just to find a role, get paid and hopefully win a SB. For others it’s to be the best at what they do and be recognized as such while also obtaining an SB and to get paid well. I look at some of the stars of this league, especially those at running back (past and present) and most of them were stars their whole lives. I’m talking about the Petersons, the Sanders, the Smiths and etc., and if you would’ve put them in a role where they couldn’t really be themselves, then tell them their selfish for trying to go somewhere else to get “be the man” then we don’t live in a free world anymore. The difference between the stars of this league and the role players isn’t just money and an team oriented attitude. It’s confidence and goals and EGO. I don’t mean ego as a pejorative either. It’s the difference between Kobe and Lamar Odom. Odom is good at what he does but he’s not Kobe. Put Kobe in Lamar’s role and he’s depressed and suffocated and he’ll do whatever he can to get out—even if it means leaving his team. Why because he’s selfish? No he has a different make-up, a different drive. His goals are higher and he expects more out of himself than Odom. You can see it in his game, isn’t it better than Odom’s? He’s done more with his talent and wants to prove to not just you but to himself that he can do it. We can go on about this and maybe I’ll post on it after the season but just food for thought to get people to think outside of what they feel and see the flip side of the coin.

I think it was Jahri, who cleaned up a missed block by maybe Sproles or Bushrod, he threw the defender like a sack of potatoes, one of their best games. Lot of energy.

I don't understand Lance's grade

He had 2 catches for 52 yards and the second one he pulled up because of his hammy. I think he deserves a B+ for what he did tonight.

by Saintsfan75 on Dec 28, 2011 1:43 AM CST reply actions

And I voted for Drew

I know he was a little off tonight and I could see it in the fourth quarter. I had a feeling that he had that record on his mind. But his pocket presence was awesome and his ability to extend the play just shows the extint of his awesomness.

by Saintsfan75 on Dec 28, 2011 1:44 AM CST reply actions

He did his job, and then some

he def threw a few that he shouldnt have trying to get the record (even if he said he wasnt thinking about it) and the end result was that the game was over in the third quarter.

by forrestgump52 on Dec 28, 2011 3:28 AM CST up reply actions

I thought it was weird..........

Atlanta went for it on fourth down and failed at their 32 yard line (I think) and that was exactly what Drew needed to achieve the record and a touchdown. In my mind Atlanta failed again in their decision making but it worked out perfect for Drew. Atlanta is now shell shocked playing our Saints and should be easy pickins in the playoffs. They have no solution to stop our offence and with the record out of the way, Drew will now have a clear mind going into the playoffs. He can now relax and just become the surgon we expect.

what if Mike Smith thought this: (and I'm totally joking)

“I’ll be damned if I’m going to punt away and give Brees 70+ yards to get the record! We’ll go for it here and if we don’t get it, I’d just like to see him try and get 30 passing yards when they start on our 32 and we’ve given up over 160 rushing yards to them already and there’s only 3 minutes left in the game!! So there!! Nanny nanny boo boo, Stick your record in doo doo.”

by Hans Petersen on Dec 28, 2011 11:23 AM CST up reply actions

Sadly, it wouldn’t actually surprise me if they did think that. But I don’t really think he was.

Most likely he was just thinking the exact same thing that cause him to go for it in 4th-and-1 in overtime in ATL. He’s just scared of Drew. (And rightly so!)

Now granted this time he wasn’t worried about losing, that was pretty much guaranteed by that point. He was just scared he wouldn’t get the ball back to have another shot at closing the scoring gap down a bit. And his pride WAS hurt by the scoring gap. Smith has a defensive background. He doesn’t like having his team get their butts blown out by three scores. Four was salt in the wound.

But if he hadn’t been so desperate to try to get it down to two scores, it wouldn’t have become four scores. So he still has nobody to blame but himself.

what he's upset about is that many thought/think and expressed/express that it's Reggie's fault he didn't get better stats in this offense

i.e. running style, durability, trying too hard, whatever…and folks blasted him right and left for being a bust, being a HUGE disappointment, being a waste of a draft pick…(but he did have some supporters, too)

and that seems to be turning out not be true lately with Reggie’s success in Miami coupled with how it’s playing out in the current Saints backfield

There’s a psychological term for this type of illogical thinking. Something to do with fallacy and bad logic…hmm…you figure it out. But be careful with blanket statements like this, it makes you look childish. I understand Payton’s mindset and it works but just because I don’t like it doesn’t mean I don’t like football. not to say that i may be due for some psychological evaluation..

It works. I mean, I use it similarly on Madden. But, like I mentioned in another comment below, I think a 2-headed monster could accomplish the same thing. I think a 1-A and 1-B back system would be fine. Once Brees leaves though, the RBBC thing is going to have to change. Unless someone steps in and Aaron Rodger’s it. But that’s unlikely.
