Why Brees should be MVP

Other than the records that are falling left and right. Here are the some stats that are not being discussed:

SAINTS PACKERS

Rushing TDs 15 12

Passing TDs 41 45

Two Pts. 2 0

One Pt. 57 62

FGs 27 23

Tot Offensive Pts 478 473

Defensive Pts 18 30

Special Teams 6 12

I have said all year that the Packer defense has helped Aaron Rodgers much more than the Saints defense have helped Drew. The average starting field position for Green Bay is 31.02 and 28.19 for the Saints. The Saints are 41.03 yards per drive, while the Pack is averaging only 39.13. The Saints are punting only 27.8% of the time, while the Pack are punting at a rate of 35.9%. These facts I think show that the Saints are much more efficient than the Pack. I say all this helps support the claim that Drew deserves the MVP.

The real reason Rodgers is going to win the MVP has nothing to do with seasons or stats, but has to do with the storied tradition of Packer football and Vince Lombardi et al and the storied tradition of Saints football, the bags et al. The truth is if Drew Brees played for a team with a winning tradition, he would have already won the MVP, twice.

I care because he deserves it.

Aren’t you a little bit tired of the disrespect that our players are getting, because they are playing in New Orleans and not New York or Green Bay. I know I am. The truth is Drew should have won two MVP’s already. I am just a little tired of the not right that is going on in the world. Isn’t sports the one place where the not right is not supposed to happen. I want a Super Bowl more than you can imagine. I remember the 62 – 0 loses and the 1 – 15 seasons all too well. I remember the hope every year. The years of Archie getting pummeled because his team sucked. So pardon me if I want what is right and just and the MVP for Drew is right and just.

There are some who think it was because Archie sucked. I’m not one of them.

Every board I see on the SBN network is filled with teams saying this crap! Now you’re throwing Green Bay in there with the big market cities, that’s a first. It’s homerism at it’s finest.

They’re more efficient because they have a better running game. That has nothing to do with Brees.

Well, not nothing. Brees’s passing efficiency does contribute to the success of the running game. I just don’t think it’s much of an argument, in terms of value over Rodgers.

Excuse me

The fact that Green Bay starts 3 yards closer to the goal line has nothing to do with the running game. Additionally, much of the running game is developed out of respect for the passing game. The soft defensive fronts are designed to get pressure on Brees, not to stop the run. The fact that the Saints are punting only 27.8% of the time versus 35.9% of the time for the Packers has more to do with the Saints ability to get a first down on a fourth and 12 than a fourth and one.

Do you honestly believe that teams don't take same approach against the Packers?

Teams focus on stopping the pass against the Packers as well. The difference is they have a horrible (in large part due to injuries) offensive line and average at best running backs. The difference in the teams running games has little, if anything, to due Rodgers or Brees.

For the record, I think Rodgers will win the MVP, and Brees will win the offensive player of the year award like he did last time he went over 5,000 yards.

They’re designed to do both. No DC in the league ignores an entire aspect of an opposing offense. I don’t care how good your QB or RB is.

These percentages and "team" stats aren't relevant to choosing an MVP

I don’t understand the point of discussing it using this data because none of this will be taken into account when an MVP is chosen. Almost all MVP’s are chosen due to “individual” statistics, wins, big plays, and national exposure. I believe Brees has all of that and so does Aaron Rodgers. Anyone could make a convincing MVP argument for both quarterbacks.

The real reason Rodgers is going to win the MVP has nothing to do with seasons or stats, but has to do with the storied tradition of Packer football
Disagree. This is an assumption with no supporting evidence. The real reason is Rodgers has thrown 4 more TD’s, 7 less interceptions, and has 2 more wins.

While I agree with you that "tradition" plays almost no part in this and a lot of team stats can be thrown out the window,

I really do wish they’d look at the defensive contribution (turnovers and field position have definitely factored into Rodgers season at least a little). I do think if the Saints and Packers had the same record, the Saints had gone undefeated for a long stretch, but Rodgers and Brees otherwise had the same stats they have now, I think Brees would edge him out. So it sucks that most team stats are ignored, while wins (pretty much the most team-centric stat there it) is weighed heavily. Unless Rodgers does manage to repeat as a Super Bowl winner this year, I think 30 years from now, every non-GB football fan will look back and think it was a mistake that Rodgers got it instead of Brees.

If the voters looked at ‘defensive contribution’, then why shouldn’t they look at the other advanced statistics that favor Rodgers? Why should the statistics that just favor Brees be looked at?

They shouldn’t.

But the ones that show that Drew is JUST AS valuable should be looked at.

This isn’t the Heisman. If it was, Aaron would and SHOULD win it, hands down no questions asked. But it’s not.

That record will have transpired over multiple seasons, just as it did for Unitas. As such, it will have no bearing on the MVP award of any one given season.

Historical records are moot when you’re talking about the 2011 season alone. I don’t know why that’s so difficult to understand. This is pretty much like 1984, when Marino and Dickerson set the passing and rushing marks respectively. If simply breaking those records was the crux, they would have been co-MVPs that season. Rodgers will likely break the all-time record for passer rating, which takes both yardage and completion percentage — Brees’s two trump cards — into account. I’m not saying passer rating should be the end all, be all. Just that you have two worthy candidates and whenever that’s the case, all statistics, including W-L record as a starter, are bound to be considered. All in all, there’s a clear cut edge for Rodgers, just as there was for Marino over Dickerson in 1984. Marino’s Dolphins were 14-2 that season. The Rams were 10-6.

LOL

Wanna compare Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers?
Well, in this post, I’m going to compare the Saints/Packers running games, defenses, and special teams.
This will clearly show who is the better quarterback of the two.

Co-MVP Brees and Rodgers. I would be happy with that.

by SarahT on Dec 30, 2011 1:25 AM CST reply actions

Yep...

Co-MVPs this season. As seen above, convincing arguments can be made for both players to get consideration. I would not be too surprised to see the votes work out in such a way that both get well-deserved recognition. We can compare what Brees and Rogers have both done this year until the cows come home, but there is no denying that they are both having world-class seasons.

Aaron Rodgers will get it, but Drew deserves it.

Most people will deny that Drew is a much better QB than Rodgers even though they see it with their own two eyes, it’s obvious. Play for play, looking at Brees with his expeirienced moves, patience and knowledge of the game all shows when Drew plays. Rodgers, when you look at him, you can see the inexpeirience in his quarterbacking skills. I know he is a great QB, but you can see the difference between the two, I can. People like Rodgers because they never thought he would be another Favre, or should I say better than Favre. He’s a great QB as I’ve said before, but he is no Favre. I’ve never seen tougher QB’s as Favre and Archie Manning, those guys were really tough, both of those guys hung in there and played the game hurt or not. I can’t see Rodgers doing that. Rodgers gets MVP because he saved GB after the Favre days and also because they won the SB last year. And don’t tell me that saving GB doesn’t count, because I know those voters account for that even though it seems so ancient. Brees #1 and again, SB most valuable player.

It's fine if you want to argue Brees for MVP, he's had a great season

but let’s not say ridiculous things like this:

you can see the inexpeirience in [Rodger]s quarterbacking skills
