... the defense is doing exactly what we need to do as far as holding teams to however many points we need to win the game." -Malcolm Jenkins
That's it. They aren't playing to shut any team down. Just good enough to win. To expect anything more from this crew would be unreasonable.

and sometimes they'll achieve that goal, and other times they won't (see Bucs @ Tampa, Rams @ St. Louis)
here’s hoping they’ll keep doing it…but I’d still love to see more takeaways.

Seriously. We need to put a QB on the practice squad whose sole job is to start like he’s taken a snap while the defense runs a coverage scheme, then he deliberately fires bullets at the defense and tries to hit them in the head with the ball. The defense in turn has the job of catching those balls rather than letting themselves get hit. And to make it more challenging, they are NOT ALLOWED to try to dodge. Their only defense is to catch the ball.
Helmets ought to prevent them from actually getting hurt. But bonk their noggins a few times and they might actually learn to catch.

maybe all the coaches and training staff should just carry around footballs all the time
and then just fire them at the DBs and LBs at random, when they’re not expecting it all around the practice facility.
While carrying their lunch trays to the table…while getting into the whirlpool or ice bath…while power lifting 400 lbs…while checking their mailboxes…
Then they’d get really good really fast at catching balls, I bet…or not.

Maybe not at potentially life-threatening events like power-lifting 400 pounds. But for all the rest, why not?
I know the joke is that if they could catch they’d be playing wide receiver. Well if we’re going to stick with a GW-style defense — and I’m NOT opposed to that, but we also don’t HAVE to stick with it — then the DBs have GOT to be able to catch.
If the current ones can’t learn now, then they need to be replaced with ones who can. Maybe we need to draft some college WRs and turn them into DBs because we don’t need more WRs at the moment. Maybe we just take any DB we’re considering drafting and bump well up on the draft-evaluation priority list the ability to actually catch. Maybe some of both. I don’t know the BEST solution. But we have GOT to TRY something…
I really think we need to remember that the key guys, at least imo
are Jenkins, Greer, and Porter. They are all still fairly young. I expect we are on the verge of seeing a LOT better sticky hands. We sure have the disruption down. I think we’re like 5th or 6th in passes defended. That’s a start and they are young. What? Porter’s the oldest in a new regime that is trying to change things to opportunistic and he’s only been in the league, what, 3 years?
Whodat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It wasn't pretty but was effective
since the Lions scored an average of 29 points per game in the other eleven games. Stafford seemed to be playing well with no glove, etc. and racked up 400 plus yards. Nevertheless, the Lions managed only 17 points. I know that ‘self-inflicted’ comes into consideration here. Anybody think that our defensive players might have aggravated the Lions into so many personal fouls on purpose? The Saints looked awfully, ‘Saintly’ on the other side of the altercations. Eddie Hascals?

I attempted to rec the post above re: firing balls at players heads
but it went to flag somehow??? Some glitch happened. That’s a great idea. Catch the ball! However, Ilike our defense. We lost TOP vs Detroit and only gave up 2 TDs. That’s pretty good. We gace up a lot of yards vs Detroit and NY, but clearly we were better and controlled the game for the most part.
I think this week could be our most difficult matchup- we need to play well.

Nope. I've had the same thing happen.
Hit refresh and, like magic, it becomes a Rec. Weird. I just rec’d it, also. Best idea I’ve heard in ages. Take that over stats any day of the week.

So our defense sucks on purpose
We meant to suck. Thanks for setting the record straight, Malcolm. I feel so much better about the defense now.
