Payton said he’s been teased frequently by staff/players that the off. is “rolling right along” since he was injured & stopped calling plays
There’s still that one game debacle in St. Louis that happened after Payton was injured. I hope no one in the locker room is forgetting how much everyone sucked that game. Sure as hell can’t say the offense was “rolling right along” in that one.

That game is a dirty stain on the season
Don’t get me wrong, I’m very optimistic about this year. But that Rams game had me extremely worried for awhile, and I don’t think I’ve completely shook it off.
The O-line has improved a lot since that game.
De La Puente is getting more comfortable at Center and we have Strief back at RT instead of Brown. Plus, the coaches added more chipping from RBs and TEs to help out. I don’t think we’ll have that poor O-line play again this season, barring any injuries.
More data-mining in the Saints Nation article.
Although nobody will confuse the Saint’s DL with the Lion’s DL, it is improper to look at some average statistics and say the DL is not stopping the run. The DL works in concert with the Linebackers and Strong Safety, who have responsibility when the run is bounced outside. Instead of just looking at YPC averages, the author should also look at variance (i.e., standard deviation). If YPC has gone up but variance has gone up more, then this indicates there are more short gains and more long gains compared to the average. Then one must look at game film to determine if the long gains are the fault of the DL or the Linebackers.
I don’t have the resources to review the film/games, but I sense that the Saints are in fact stopping the run between the tackles as the season goes along, not so much outside. But at least I have the courtesy to say it’s an opinion, not cite a bunch of inappropriately analyzed statistics.

Improved
Frankin and Rogers have played better in the middle part of the season. The problem in the run game has been the play of the linebackers. The Saints are undersized there and tend to get walled off a lot on the edges. You don’t see too many teams just pounding the Sains right up the middle. Instead, they use a lot of zone reads to the edges and often gash the Saints with cut backs to the back side. This has been an issue all season.

You have a memorial wall for Eugene McCarthy? That is so nice.
Being in politics is like being a football coach. You have to be smart enough to understand the game, and dumb enough to think it’s important. -Eugene McCarthy
