Do you know why Willie didn't make the cut?
Because Ed Sabol did. Because Ed Sabol is a member of the media, one of the people who tells the story, and the media loves it when telling the story becomes the story. It’s no accident, I think, that Shannon Sharpe, Deion Sanders, and Marshall Faulk—all of them deserving, don’t get me wrong—are currently members of the media. Willie Roaf isn’t, and his support was nowhere to be seen.
Shame, shame, shame, shame on the voters.
It was worth the wait.
The HOF voting is just as much a joke as the AP award voting. And just as much as the Pro Bowl voting. The whole system is a complete farce. But I’m not surprised either.
The media probably should play some role in things. These are people who have covered their team and/or the sport in general for decades, their voices should not be silenced. But they should be balanced by other factors. Perhaps previous inductees. Or perhaps coaches who were contemporaries (whenever possible, of course) of the players under consideration. Better yet, both. I’d also like to see the current head coaches have a vote, and the fans to at least have a small say in things as well.
So what that it makes it complicated. This is the Hall of FAME, it’s supposed to be the very best of the very best who ever played the game. It’s not supposed to be the Hall of Those Who Are Popular With The Media.
The fans DO have a say in it. They either choose to support the MUSEUM (that’s all it truly is) by paying admission to see the exhibits — including the players enshrined — or they don’t. It’s the same dynamic as any other museum. If there’s no one paying to see “The Treasures of Bob” at the Smithsonian, it won’t take them long to realize they’re doing something wrong. At the same time, you don’t exactly see surveys being passed around, asking the general PUBLIC what they’d like to see on display. That’s up to the PRIVATE committees appointed by these PRIVATE institutions. And you’re right, it’s the Pro Football Hall of FAME, not the Hall of Most Talented NFL Players. As long each inductee quantifies THEIR definition of “fame” — which appears to be the case from top to bottom — they’ve done THEIR job.

My only beef with the enshrinement process is all the first ballot inductees. As far as players go, I think each should be given a finite IN or OUT grade five years after their retirement. Induction should then be based upon that retirement year, with no exceptions. No more waiting years and years to find out. On top of which, there also be some type of nomination process for second reviews. This would have to be accompanied with a compelling argument for revolution of the game, however. This would mainly be for individuals whose long term impact wasn’t apparent until years after their initial review. Or in the case of the current backlog, individuals who were never afforded that initial review. Basically, you’d be putting a whole lot more emphasis on the guys who may not live long enough to see their own bronze bust otherwise, while queueing up the more recent guys with at least a rough ETA, based on their self-imposed annual limits.

It doesn't help
that Willie played in small markets at a position that doesn’t “flash”. He’;; get in, just don’t know when.

Agreed. But this really was quite a story. Did you see the pre NFL Films clip they showed? “This is what the NFL looked like BEFORE Ed Sabol….” Looked like film the AV club shoots of a high school football game. I don’t have any problem with Ed Sabol getting in. Willie Roaf will get in, John Madden will make sure that happens.

Rec'd it - and he "mic'ed up" players and coaches and got great access to teams, too
Who can forget Hank Stram’s sideline harangues? Gold!
Happiness is a warm blanket.
