NFL Draft 2011: Sean Payton Reveals Saints NFL Draft Plan
Saints head coach Sean Payton sat down with Fox Sports Radio for a little pre-draft interview yesterday and offered an interesting nugget of information about what position the Saints are likely to draft in the first round of tonights NFL Draft.
Are you looking for defensive line going into the first round of the draft at pick number twenty-four?
"I think that's a good place to start. It's an area we feel like we want to address and help get some depth and help bring some young players into that group. I also think it's an area of this draft where there is some depth...the last four or five days has really been looking at that group and kind of going through some scenarios and come into the second round for that group of players...
Woah, that's pretty revealing stuff for a deceptive man of few words like Sean Payton. Which can only mean that defensive line is probably the last position the Saints will target with the 24th overall selection tonight. Take this with a grain of salt, Saints fans. The biggest grain of salt you can find.
What do you think? Is Payton setting up the smoke screen for INGRAMANIA!!! tonight? Or is he really telling us the truth?

Or is he really telling us the truth?
“Luke, you will find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view.”
Sean is telling us the truth, the absolute and exact truth… from a certain (probably greatly twisted) point of view. He’s telling us that they want to add depth there. No team in our situation would be considered sane if it did NOT want to add depth. But he didn’t say they want a starter, nor did he say they did NOT want to find a starter. He didn’t tell us jack squat of any real consequence.
Just like all his other press conferences.

BOOM!
Well said!

He is a craft rascal.

Looks like Stu could still get his way. Ingram first round…Sheard or another DE round two?

The Draft
I’m not a religious person but I pray to God that Coach has a defense heavy draft!
As much fun it is to get swept up in INGRAMANIA! it wasn’t the lack of a star RB that kept the Saints from advancing past the Seahawks…
That's not impossible...I used to bull's-eye whomprats in my T-16 back home, they're not much bigger than two meters!
You only say that because coldpizza is in New York.
Jesus1000, we coulda had Mark Ingram. GAAAAA!!!!

Actually a strong case could be made that a lack of a star RB was a major case of why we didn’t advance past the seahawks. Good teams don’t get stopped numerous…and i do mean numerous times inside the 10 yard line. We kept getting stopped because we didn’t have a running game and seattle would drop 8 into coverage.
That and you could spend every draft pick on defense and not actually improve the defense. It’s on who you choose…not what you choose. Would I prefer Kerrigan to Ingram…yea…but he won’t be there.
"Winter is coming"
so are you telling me that the offense
was responsible for the defense? Does that work vice verca? Either way, good teams don’t give up more than 28 points to the Seahawks who were 7-9 that season. The first time that a team with a losing record wins a division and of course we would actually lose lol. We did have more oppurtunities in the redzone that we didn’t turn into as many points as i would like.

See this is what we call…changing the argument. I said that a “case” could be made. And it could…quite easily. Convert 2 of the 5 trips we get stopped…we win the game regardless of what happened on defense. That and if you paid attention…which I know you did…you’d also note that our problems on defense in that game was not necessarily with the front 7 (Marshawn Lynch play excluded). Yes we didn’t get near enough pressure on the QB…but we also didn’t cover deep or against RBs and TEs out of the backfield. Our safeties were exposed…which is notably not something we’re supposed to be addressing in the first round.
Again, you said a star running back wasn’t why we lost…I simply pointed out that the lack of one DID indeed contribute to the loss. I never claimed it was the sole reason. Likewise our poor defense was not the sole reason either. To quote a bad movie “even the sun shines on a dogs ass some days”…that day Seattle was the lucky dog in the sun. Happens.

INGRAMANIA! forever or until the Saints don’t pick him. If they do go D Line I’m pro Claiborne even though he plays with one arm.
Watch some tape…he plays with both. Remember he was a top 15 pick all the way up until they found out about the Erbs Palsy at the combine. I find it rather humorous actually. Everyone says to watch the tape because the tape doesn’t lie. The tape shows that Clayborn can dominate against top competition, Erbs Palsy or no Erbs Palsy. Clayborn’s a good player, if we grab him, no complaints.

I will be wearing my Vilma jersey
And hoping that it somehow channels positive thoughts towards our front office for bolstering the D.
C’mon Kerrigan.
I like Hamburgers!
Better hope Jacksonville and others forget he’s on the board then. Best grab some voodoo dolls representing some GMs to make it happen.

Ryan Mallet wants to know if it can be sniffed

If I am good I could add years to my life / I would rather add some life to my years.
BTW I’m gonna miss CSC’ing the draft tonight as I won’t be home. Enjoy the tension, arguments, histrionics and eventual crushing disappointment, guys.
“WE DRAFTED WHO?! WHO THE HELL IS THAT?!”
If I am good I could add years to my life / I would rather add some life to my years.
Dammit.
Let me enjoy the last few hours of INGRAMANIA!!!

I’ll be here.

Noooooo!
Last year you were announcing the picks as they were being taken up to the podium. I wondered how you were able to get call many of the picks so quickly.
"Dang! The Saints won the Super Bowl!" - my wife, Meso "Happy" Hu Dat.
Payton Place
They’ll absolutely go defensive line … unless they don’t. Any connection between what Payton is thinking right now and what he is saying is merely coincidence.
I remember when the Saints drafted Mark Ingram
Ah, memories…

It was good while it lasted.

Taibbi:
Now that the bad teams have finished taking fliers on third-round quarterbacks and medical risks, the good teams can settle down to the dreary business of picking solid guys who will play in the league for 10 years.
19. New York Giants – MARK INGRAM, RB, Alabama
See above. Ingram will probably be the offensive rookie of the year, so naturally he won’t go until the 19th pick.
Jesus1000, we coulda had Mark Ingram. GAAAAA!!!!
oops
Here’s his pick for the Saints:
24. New Orleans – ADRIAN CLAYBORN, DE, Iowa
This is the stage of the draft when you take a break from drawing doodles of medieval daggers flying into Mel Kiper’s eyes and flip the station to whatever network The Fugitive is currently playing on for four or five minutes – just enough time to watch the scene where they figure out Kimble is in Chicago because he made the phone call near an elevated train.

This puts my photoshop job to shame...
thought you should have used my picture with Payton in the crowd.

i think it's exactly what we're going to do
because everyone knows that Payton keeps his cards close to his chest. The last thing that we’re expecting is for him to tell the truth and I think that this time he’s actually telling the truth. If I’m right, I’m a genius lol
Let's have a 2011 season. Get a deal done
Honestly I'm not sure anybody really knows
If they’ll have a shot at Ingram. Though if he is off the board by 24 there’s a greater chance at one of the top rush ends or OT’s being there.
Writer (and a handsome one at that),
And the Valley Shook
If some other team takes Ingram before we can get him
…will that team immediately vault to the top of your most-hated list?
It was good while it lasted.
Yes.

Well unless it’s the Bumpkineers or Punkthers. I suppose then I’d just accept it.
And Foulclowns are always and forever #32. So I suppose there is ONE team in the NFL I’d be mad if they manage to draft him.
