Starting April 4th and continuing through April 29th, Canal Street Chronicles will be counting down the top 10 draft busts and then the top 10 draft successes in Saints history. Feel free to to use these posts as a springboard for discussion about how awful or how great each draft pick turned out.
Top Bust # 8: Larry Burton
Another wide receiver bust. This time it's 1975's 7th overall pick Larry Burton. Burton was drafted during a time in the NFL when the passing game came second to the running game. But that does not explain his only 804 receiving yards over five seasons, two of which weren't even with the Saints. Burton did make it up by scoring seven touchdowns but as a first round receiver, he should have managed to become a long-term starter. Instead, Burton only played three seasons with the Saints before moving on to the San Diego Chargers (moving on to the Chargers at the time is the best way to tell when a career ends).
As an Olympic sprinter, I'm sure Burton's speed wasn't the problem. Yet he couldn't make it in the big leagues. Since I wasn't born yet, I can't tell you first-hand what was wrong with Burton. But If you watched Burton play, please share your own personal insights in the comment section. Are You Smarter Than The Experts?
