Okay, let's settle this first.

Did we give up too much for Ingram? Let’s be specific about what we actually gave up.

New England got our 2012 first-rounder. But we got their 2011 first-rounder. Even swap. In effect, we simply used our 2012 pick a year early. So far, we’ve given up nothing.

So what was the "service charge" on the deal? We sent New England a second-rounder. Yeah, that could have been used to draft another good player…like, say, Martez Wilson, who we got in the third anyway.

Could Ingram be a bust? I don’t see it happening. He could wind up getting so severely injured that his entire career is derailed and we get no value from him…but that could happen to anyone. And I don’t buy into the alarm about his knee injury—all that incident tells me is that he’s a quick healer.

So no, I don’t think we gave up too much. In the context of the entire draft, we made out like bandits. Besides, Ingram’s upside is shaped like a Lombardi trophy, and I’d give anything short of my soul for another of those.
