Free Agent Survivor: Offense

We have 26 total players from last season that will be Free Agents this off-season (whatever that means). And there is almost no way we can sign all of them, and really no reason to sign all of them.  But of the 11 on offense, which would you want to keep? I had to break it down to offense and defense because 26 would have been too many for a poll, so splitting it up into offense and defense makes it a little more even. And let's just say we sign half the guys on each side of the ball (bringing back about 13 players), so I will take the top 5 from offense and top 8 from defense and we'll just go with that for our free agents we need to sign. Yeah maybe you think we need to bring back more than 1 player (that would be your vote) so maybe instead of wasting your vote on a player you know will get the votes, vote for that other guy that might not get so many votes. (ex. Lance Moore and Goodwin might get plenty of votes by default, but Baconator might not garner that much attention, so why not give big Dave some extra cheese. It's all up to you though. I'll try to do the defense in a couple days, but for now...who will win this round of Survivor?

You forgot Nicks and Hamilton. They’re not guaranteed to be restricted and/or exclusive rights.

They would have been under the former CBA. It’s completely up in the air.

Priority (imo):

1. Nicks
2. Thomas
3. Moore
4. Strief
5. Goodwin
6. Bushrod
7. Hamilton
8. Humphrey
9. Roby
10. Jones
11. Evans
12. Betts
13. Wynn

I’m indifferent on anyone below Bushrod. Bushrod’s ranked below Strief and Goodwin due to expected salary demands. I don’t see much of a dropoff there in terms of talent. Both Strief and Goodwin can play guard in a pinch. Strief can also line up at tight end. While I’d like to have all three back, Bushrod appears to bring the least to the table, despite being a starter. I wouldn’t be overly upset if he walked.

If Hamilton signs elsewhere, I’d have no problem bringing Jones back. He played well last season and we really could use his veteran leadership at the position.

by bondcrash on May 19, 2011 4:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, there’s no guarantee he makes the team. But contract length does say something about their desire to land him at the time. Otherwise, it would never get beyond 1 year at the league minimum. It’s the agents that push for longer deals, meaning Loomis at least entertained the counter offer. We’re also talking about two relative unknowns, as opposed to Jones, Betts and Wynn, so the odds of there having been other interested (read: curious) parties looking to bring them in were probably greater.

good point about both Goodwin and Strief being versatile, I agree that could make them more “valuable” than Bushrod, that coupled with the fact that Bushrod will demand more money

My top 5 FA list.

1 Nicks: Production last year was pro bowl caliber

2. Bushrod: He has positional value as a LT or RT. If there is one thing we learned from th Cowboys last season it is that lack productive offensive line will cost you the season.

3.. Thomas: TE talent drops significantly after him. If Jimmy G gets hurt dring the season who do you suppose will pick up the sack if Thomas is not on the team.

4..Moore: Several people would argue he would be #1, but we have a lot of talent in the WR position compared to the TE position. It would hurt to lose him, but not as much as Thomas or Bushrod.

5. Goodwin: Changing a center without OTA’s would be a bad Idea.

I have a feeling Moore’s going to wind up getting an offer he can’t refuse elsewhere, a la Fujita. I think if the Saints intended to dump a lot of money in his lap or tie him up long term, they would have done it by now. Hope I’m wrong, as I do like the guy.

If there are OTAs I think the offensive line composition will become very interesting.

Bushrod vs Brown at left tackle
Strief vs Brown at right tackle

I think it is safe to say that Bushrod will have to take a pay cut in order to remain a left tackle, or be willing to move to right tackle. If Brown has comparabe skill to Bushrod at the left tackle position ( which would not be to difficult), Brown will be the left tackle, Bushrod will move to the right (if he takes right tackle money) and Strief and Bushrod will alternate. This would also provide flexibility for Bushrod to move to left tackle.

I do believe they will keep Strief because they can retain him with very little money invested.

If you mean as a BACK UP left tackle, then I agree. Trouble is, you can’t automatically assume he’ll be a backup, without knowing what you have in Brown. And Bushrod’s agent knows this. So, I seriously doubt he’s going to be signing for anything less than starting LT pay. Especially after the Saints “won a SB while he was playing that position” (that being the agent’s diehard sales pitch, not my own personal view of his worth).

Bushrod, Moore, Strief, Goodwin, Thomas, Nicks

Bushrod I believe was hurt the majority of last year, under the radar, like Stinchcomb.
I look at Charles Brown as a RT, so keeping Bushrod is a must in my book.

Strief is more expendable, but only if we ADD an inline blocking TE.

Goodwin may be expendable, depending on Tennant’s development. Though Goodwin is underated and I don’t think he’d hurt us to keep.

Nicks is a PRIORITY. We don’t know if he’ll be restricted or not— it depends on what rules are in place when player movent starts. In Sean Payton’s Gulf Coast Offense, a top tier guard is more important than a top tier tackle. I’ll explain more on that in an article called Gulf Coast Offense.

I have to think Dave Thomas is a priority as well. He’s a jack of all trades, too versatile to let go. On top of that, we have a draft choice invested in him. He’s the type of player Loomis signs to a contract that doesn’t raise eyebrows, yet his contributions make him a bargain for years to come.

Moore is a fit for the system and for Drew Brees. He’s one of Drew’s favorite, and he’s earned a modest payday. Are his expectations modest?

Preston,

It took a long time for Pierre to get his well deserved pay raise. Lance will get his also from the SAINTS. He is one of Brees’ favorite targets because he is open quite often. Yes he does get double covered in times but he finds ways to get open and Drew knows that very well. He’s not tall, nor does he have tremendous speed, but he has what counts the most, brains, very athletic, does not quit and hypes the team up.

by tommy v on May 23, 2011 12:19 PM CDT reply actions

Tommy,
I agree. They’ve not been close in negotiations before the CBA expired. Lance is the kind of guy you can’t help but love— he busted his butt from a UDFA and has done nothing but perform. However, even when Colston got his second contract, it wasn’t top WR money— more like #2 WR money; Loomis actually called it “a bridge to his next contract” which would be the big payday. I think with Lance, it will be something similar in philosophy, but less in money.

by Preston J. Gary, Jr. on May 24, 2011 6:44 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree.

I’m sure he won’t get as much as Colston and even Lance knows that. But he really deserves alot more than what he’s getting now.

by tommy v on May 24, 2011 11:10 PM CDT up reply actions

If you mean nothing, I agree. He deserves a lot more than nothing. If you mean a lot more than the $1.7M he made last season, that’s extremely debatable. One year tenders (which is what he’s been extended the last two offseasons) are already based on perceived value. What did he do last season to deserve a substantial pay hike? Just saying, it’s not like he’s been playing on an UDFA contract this entire time.
