Signing Dave Thomas is probably the #2 priority, second only to re-signing Carl Nicks, assuming he ends up not being restricted. I think Thomas will stay. The Saints already invested a draft choice in acquiring him, and Payton really likes his versatility. Depending on what direction the Saints go in with the Tackle position, I think the Saints could use an in-line blocking TE. There are some big name TE’s who could be out there and I could see Payton adding to the stable of pass catchers. In this offense, you can never have too many WR’s or TE’s.
Here’s a list of the TE’s who could potentially be Free Agents. Those with only 4 or 5 years of service have a (4) or (5) next to their names. Any more than that and when FA starts, they’ll be no restricted no matter what. As to the 4-5 year guys, it’s up in the air as of now. Mercedes Lewis is on the list, though he has a Franchise Tag. The tag may not apply when FA starts however.
Desmond Clark – CHI
Robert Royal – CLE
Daniel Graham – DEN
Mercedes Lewis – JAC (5)
Donald Lee – GB
Bo Scaife – TEN
Jerramy Stevens
Stephen Spach – ARI (5)
Ben Patrick – ARI (4)
Anthony Becht – ARI
Jeff King – CAR (5)
Dante Rosario – CAR (4)
Daniel Coats – DEN (4)
Leonard Pope – KC (5)
Brad Cottam – KC
Joey Haynos – MIA
David Thomas – NO (5)
Kevin Boss – NYG (4)
Zach Miller – OAK (4)
Matt Spaeth – PIT (4)
Derek Schouman – STL (4)
Daniel Fells – STL (4)

I like the idea of hurting people in division, so Dante Rosario would be on MY list. I liked Ben Patrick and Leonard Pope coming out of college as late round choices, not sure how they’d fit.
I believe Bo Scaife, Matt Spaeth, Donald Lee, Daniel Graham, Anthony Becht, and Desmond Clark would fit in to what we do here.
I believe Zach Miller, Kevin Boss, and Mercedes Lewis are out of our price range and will stay with their teams.
I don’t know enough about the other guys to comment.

Spaeth is an exceptional blocker, but brings virtually nothing else to the table. I’m with you on Rosario. Solid blocker who has also shown the ability to blow up in the passing game and likely bargain basement on top of that.

heck
he might pay the Saints to get himself out of Carolina.

He and King both got tendered before the lockout, but they already have Barnidge and Shockey under contract. I seriously doubt they keep four.

I do believe Rosario would be THE perfect fit.
It would also be one of those “under the radar” moves that Loomis is great at— an impactaful player for a bargain price, and stealing him from in division to boot.
