NFL Top 100 vs. Peter King
|
If you've been following NFL Network's "Top 100 Players" or at least been following here at CSC, you're pretty up-to-date on what's going on. I've always been a fan of Peter King's (Sports Illustrated MMQB writer) work, but this has me a little...discombobulated. He's been making his own "top 100" list as the weeks go by along with the "NFL's" and now they're down to the top 30. He has Jahri Evans ranked at 73 (and no it's not just his jersey number) whereas Evans was ranked 39 spots higher at 34 (which seems more fitting to me) on NFL Network's list. But at least he even ranked Jabari Greer (who I guess is under-rated) at number 66. The only other Saints player on his list (so far) is Carl Nicks, higher than NFLN at 41 (compared to 55). I don't think he'd put Colston in the top 30, although there are a few surprises on his list, such as Troy Polomalu ranked at number 50. Vilma could possibly make it, but I have my doubts about that. So the only guy on the Saints left that could make it into the list is Brees, and who knows where he'll end up. The only thing I can say about this list is everyone is entitled to their opinion...especially when it's your job. |

Peter King, 2009
24. New Orleans
No team with Drew Brees will ever be awful, particularly in a division without an almighty power. The Saints will win two or three 40-31-type of games. But unless Gregg Williams can find a better-than-average pass-rush by maneuvering some average chess pieces — and unless Jonathan Vilma plays like Superman, and Jabari Greer and Malcolm Jenkins cover like Deion — this defense is not going to be good enough to win eight games.

8 games!
Thanks for bringing this up. I had forgotten what a dumba** King sounded like. I admit I read his MMQB regularly, but only because I love when that little hobbit’s East Coast biased, Brady slurping smugness takes a shot straight to the yambag. And it always does. How bout 16-3 with the first 13 and the last 3 in a row?

What…he was absolutely correct. The thing was…Williams DID find a way to move some average chess pieces around on defense. Vilma DID play like Superman at times that season. And Greer and Porter, although didn’t cover like Deion, did indeed combine to be one of the top 5 CB tandems that year.
You need to stop fixating on one half of the story and realize he mapped out how they could be better…and they were.
"Winter is coming"
Since you put it that way. I would like to thank Mr. King for letting us know exactly what we needed to do.
Baseball is what we were. Football is what we have become. ~Mary McGrory
It’s hardly my fault that fans have a knee-jerk reaction to everything and pounce on any negative without actually looking at things with their rose colored glasses off. This was the exact same defense as the year before that was one of the worst in the NFL. The differences…Jenkins, Greer and Williams. All of which he clearly pointed out. If the defense played like the year before…guess what…we would have been like the year before. 7-8 wins and nothing to show for it. But they didn’t. Williams got the pieces working. That’s why he has those two statements with the “unless” in there…which apparently everyone except my self refuses to acknowledge.

I agree with you here...
Lotta homers around here. An analyst, writer or player says one thing bad constructive about the Saints and people around here want to crucify them. Don’t get me wrong not saying I’m a huge fan of King but you catch my drift.
2010 is cuzzin's breakout year...run with that chip bruh!
We’re Saints fans though, it’d be “un-Saintly” to not stick up for our team (no matter how bad they may be). It’s like if somebody calls your mom fat (and let’s say she is), either way you can’t just sit there and take it, you gotta fight back a little….and in our case our mom was fat, someone said something… and she lost a lot of weight and she won the super bowl!
And just as you have planted your seed in the ground, I'm going to plant my seed in you.
LOL!!!
Why you talking bout my moms yo?!!! LOL
2010 is cuzzin's breakout year...run with that chip bruh!
This was too low. There’s no way around it. While some may view the Saints with rose-tinted glasses, if King looked at the ‘09 Saints and only saw 8 wins, he should’ve had his prescription checked.
For every homer out there, there’s some contrarian who is overly negative and mistakes pessimism for realism or believes negativity somehow immediately equates to fairness. They moan and sigh and get defensive and prop up their comments no matter how wrong their opinions may be.

Except that if you go back and check the rankings of all the pundits the average for the Saints hovered somewhere around 18. According to your logic…the world outside of Saints fans were over negative contrarians.
"Winter is coming"
And the problem with your logic is that time has proven that in 2009 the homers were right, and the experts like King were wrong.
That’s the rough part about putting out predictions. When they turn out wrong, there are going to be people calling you out on them. No matter how rational the prediction seems at the time, if it turns out wrong then you have to man up to it, and in this case, Peter King was about as wrong as someone can be when he said the Saints were the 24th best team in the league. Sometimes the rational prediction is the wrong one.

He did man up to it…numerous…numerous…numerous times. But that doesn’t seem to matter to any of you.
"Winter is coming"
That’s not what you said earlier.
What…he was absolutely correct.
"I want to hand this trophy to the MVP of the Super Bowl -- and the MVP of the entire league.''
-- Saints coach Sean Payton, handing the Vince Lombardi Trophy to Drew Brees after Super Bowl 44.
In his assessment. You’re trying to change the argument. Somehow I’m not surprised by that.
"Winter is coming"
King gave 3 things that had to happen for the Saints to win more than 8 games:
1. Get an above average pass rush by moving around average players. If you really want to call Will Smith and Sedrick Ellis average, then fine. I won’t argue that one.
2. Jonathan Vilma plays like Superman. Assuming that means more production than the previous year, that did not happen.
3. Jabari Greer and Malcolm Jenkins play coverage like Deion Sanders. Didn’t happen.
King said all 3 needed to happen in order to win 8 games. 1 happend and they won 16. Face it. Everything PK said was absolutely 100% wrong.

You continually misinterpret and manipulate things to try and make it seem like you’re right. Congrats…but you’re not. I have an idea…write a statement saying “Peter King’s a doo doo head”…I’m sure you and the rest of the clueless hind sighters can find a way to make it green.

i agree with that too...
I’m just a person that hates extremes, I hate a contrarian more than a homer because most contrarians do so out of arrogance and an ineptitude to be sensible.
2010 is cuzzin's breakout year...run with that chip bruh!
My problems with that statement is that Vilma didn’t really step up his game that year. He plays like that every single game, so if you want to give PK credit on that one it would be like saying that this offense is ranked 24th overall – unless Drew Brees can put up Drew Brees-esque numbers. It clearly wasn’t the intention King had there. I’d hardly call Will Smith and Sedrick Ellis “average chess pieces” but I won’t argue that point. King specifically calls out Greer and Jenkins as needing to be the catalyst for better coverage in 2009. Greer was injured for almost half the season and Jenkins was used very sparingly in coverage his rookie year, so the turnaround can hardly be placed on them. If anything, “covering like Deion” was the opposite of what Malcolm Jenkins did. He could get beat in coverage and then be solid in making the tackle to prevent the huge play. Its obvious that PK grossly underestimated the players he was writing about here.

The turn around was 80% Williams scheme IMO…which was spoken about. Greer, although injured, was a top 5 CB that year when he was healthy…something that was talked about many times that year by the fans as well as the sports writers. I was simply pointing out the ridiculous view of some people here who chest bump themselves claiming 16-0 every damn year.
In 2007 and 2008 the Saints defense was flat out bad. PK was 100% correct in his statement that if they defense played the way it did before we probably wouldn’t win 8 games. But the defense did step up. At least he had the balls to put something on paper and put it out there for 31 teams to bitch about because they weren’t #1.
You’re wrong about Vilma by the way….not that he doesn’t play that way every game…but that he did step it up that year. Why? It was his second year back from major knee surgery. He was more comfortable in the scheme and with his abilities and what he could do. The statement isn’t a knock against Vilma…it’s a fact of what happens after coming back from a major injury.
"Winter is coming"
We’re talking 2009 here, right? From 08 to 09 Vilma had 11 fewer solo tackles, 11 fewer assists, 1 more sack, 2 more INTs and forced 2 fewer fumbles.
And I don’t care how good Jabari Greer was when healthy, you aren’t going to single handedly turn around a defense if you only play 60% of the season.
King was saying that these players had to step up because the rest of the team wasn’t good enough to do so. I agree that the change in defense was more due to Williams than anything else, and to me, that is a sign that this wasn’t a defense filled with bad players, like King thought. It was a team with players that could perform when given the chance.
"I want to hand this trophy to the MVP of the Super Bowl -- and the MVP of the entire league.''
-- Saints coach Sean Payton, handing the Vince Lombardi Trophy to Drew Brees after Super Bowl 44.
It wasn’t a team of bad players…it was a team of average players. Which again…King clearly stated.
As to tackles…numbers like that don’t tell the real story. I’ll take 11 fewer solo tackles and assists any day of the week if his stops are coming 2 yards closer to the line of scrimmage than they were before.
"Winter is coming"
King was just hedging his bets. He never thought we had a chance. According to King, it would take superman and deion performances just to win eight games, much less make the playoffs.

He called the defense the bad half of what he thought was the 8th worst team in the league. I don’t care how he tries to soften the ranking, that is by definition way below average.

The Seahawks playoff game reminded me alot of the 2008 defense
Which was flat out awful. In 08 the offense scored a ton of points and tons of yardage through the Air. We were just millimeters from being a 12+ winning game season that year if we had a defense and a FG kicker. It was hard to believe with all that offensive power and being the number 1 offense in scoring and in yardage we ended up dead last in the division at 8-8.
Last season I didn’t think our defense did well at all due to the soft schedule we had. With the exception of the Steelers and Falcons game. Our offense looked quite flat last season against inferior teams. Not the same spark as previous
That's interesting. You know what makes me sad? YOU DO!!! Maybe we should chug on over to mambypandyland...or maybe we can find some self confidence for you YA JACKWAGON!!!!!!

i just remember thinking when i read that in 09
that we had gotten 8 wins in 08 when our def was in shambles and we couldn’t cover anybody, not to mention we were decimated by injuries. i think drew alone will get us 7-8 wins a year. our def had no where to go but up.
