Canal Street Chronicles Roster Revamp III - The Draft (cont'd)
The draft must consist of one player each from the other 31 NFL teams. I will periodically update the three sections below the jump of this original post to reflect what is still needed, in regards to positions and/or teams. I will also comment on the most recently updated selection, so everyone knows where we stand.
Each participant will have 24 hours from the time of the pick before his/hers in order to make their selection. If I have yet to update the depth charts and/or NFL team list from the pick(s) prior, be sure to keep those selections in mind when making your own pick. You may include a picture of the player, if you wish. You may also give a brief explanation as to why you chose that particular player, if you wish. Neither is required.
If a player you select is versatile enough to man multiple positions, be sure to bring that up. It may prevent someone else from wasting a pick on another position down the line, if he/she realizes that the roster coverage is already there.
Keep in mind that the player you select ultimately eliminates all other players from his NFL team from draft consideration. To afford your fellow Saints GMs as much flexibility as possible, it might be a good idea to tackle the less talented teams first and to refrain from completely filling any one position, at least until it can no longer be avoided.
Players are to be considered members of the last NFL team they signed a contract with, not necessarily the last team they played for. For example, Shaun Rogers cannot be drafted as a Cleveland Brown. Rookies are the only exception to this rule. They are to be considerd members of the NFL team that drafted them. As such, 2011 UDFAs cannot be selected.
If anyone misses their turn, selects out of order or selects a player outside of the roster guidelines set forth, they will be removed from the draft rotation. We will continue until all roster spots have been filled accordingly. If you're not participating or it's simply not your turn, feel free to chime in with your opinions (including criticism) of the selections as they're made.

The prior thread fell from grace. I guess there must be a 14 day limit on featured posts. Please rec this new one back up and refrain from using the other going forth. I don’t think you can go wrong with Mendenhall or Blount as a power back.
There’s virtually nothing of value left in Indianapolis outside of their TEs and DEs.
FS still needs depth. Earl Thomas, Michael Griffin or Michael Huff would be sufficient.
Mankins looks like the top OG left. Tampa also has a couple of decent ones and Justin Blalock is ok, too.
Cincinnati has two LB prospects and two CBs. Gresham is a promising young TE.
Jerod Mayo and Brian Orakpo both need to be strongly considered.
Bobbie Williams is an excellent guard, imo. He’s ancient, but we’re fairly young there otherwise.
Michael Roos or Donald Penn are two fine OTs still available. Not a pressing need, though.
Vince Wilfork or Casey Hampton would give us our true NT, as previously mentioned.
Finnigan and Asomugha are two top flight CBs still out there. DeAngelo Hall is also. I also like Brent Grimes a lot.
Bironas seems like the best bet at kicker, though there are still a few options there.
Ryan Clark or just about any Pittsburgh LB (Harrison, Woodley, Timmons or Farrior) works.
"I was not on the boat in question" -Darren Sharper
Forgot to mention Atlanta’s two young LBs, Lofton and Weatherspoon. Also, Tatupum Curry and Brandon Mebane, who looked All-World against the Saints in the playoffs.

What about Michael Turner as the “power back”? even though he’s a Falcon I’ve enjoyed having him on my fantasy football team the past couple years
And just as you have planted your seed in the ground, I'm going to plant my seed in you.
I was between Mendenhall and Wilfork. I’m going with big sexy Vince Wilfork, NT, NE Patriots.

I know he was having problems with the previous thread. Hopefully he’ll be back around to make his pick, now that we have a new one going.
For the record, I don’t see anything on Thomas having played SS at the pro level as of yet, so I left that alternate designation off the depth chart.

In terms of running backs, I think we’re fine for hard-nosed, between-the-tackles runners. I’d be happier with someone like Darren McFadden who has that outside, explosive capabilities, but can still run inside. That’s what our offense is missing.

Are you sure you didn’t just describe Peterson? I don’t see “move the pile” written on any one of these guys, McFadden included.
"I was not on the boat in question" -Darren Sharper
Yeah, Peterson is a violent runner. I’m not sure we need another, but I agree that Mendenhall or Blount would fit THAT bill. I wouldn’t be upset with either pick, though Tampa does have a G and LB that would come in handy, and Pittsburgh has a versatile C/G in Pouncey and a few LB’s who’d give us decent 3-4 versatility.

8 players left.
Positions that need to meet minimum requirements: (5) OG, OLB, ILB, CB and K.
I would argue that the number of minimum need is at least 6 with the addition of a 3rd TE.
I think I’d be happy with any other two additions.
So, with the 6 positions in mind, I think two stand above everyone else:
CB Nnamdi Asomugha, Oakland Raiders
K Rob Bironis, Tennessee Titans
With what is already on the roster, no other player from those teams could fill a spot needing to meet requirement as well.

Not everyone carries three TEs, though I do prefer to have three. Same goes for QBs.
"I was not on the boat in question" -Darren Sharper
If Indy winds up being the crux on that, I think I’d rather Mathis or Freeney than Clark or Tamme. The only reason I say that is because we have Dumervil coming off of a season ending injury, Will Smith suspended four games + inconsistent, and Cam Jordan, who has yet to play a down. Of course, if we grab a DE from another team, then I have no problem taking an Indy TE.

Are you serious? When was the last time Dhani Jones was even a relevant player in the league? 2006? He’s a 33 year old non-factor. Ruud, Lofton, Timmons, Maualuga, Tatupu and even Brackett would be better choices. Fletcher and Farrior are both older and I’d prefer either of them.

Assuming Asomugha and Bironas are the Raiders/titans picks:
Cincinnati – Gresham, Williams, Rivers or Maualuga (Maualuga makes more sense), Dunlap. Andy Dalton?
Washington – Cooley, Orakpo or Fletcher (Fletcher makes more sense, despite his age).
Indianapolis – Clark or Tamme, Ijalana, Brackett, Freeney or Mathis.

If Indy winds up being the crux on that, I think I’d rather Mathis or Freeney than Clark or Tamme. Of course, if we grab a DE from another team, then I have no problem taking an Indy TE.
As it turns out, we have NOT addressed DE. As such, Clark was a luxury pick, leaving us with very little wiggle room the rest of the way. With three picks left still need a guard and kicker. DE is still the (slight) concern it was prior. We should also be carrying a fourth interior LB, so we can have proper depth when playing the 3-4.
Rob Bironas should be our kicker. I think we’re mostly in agreement on that. The only other options are Graham Gano and Mike Nugent and Clint Stitser. That rules out Will Witherspoon in the middle, who can also play outside. The Titans have no exceptional interior OL talent of which to speak. Their best pure DE is Jason Babin, coming off his first trip to the Pro Bowl. They also have a couple of potential future superstars in ’tweener OLB/DE Akeem Ayers and true DE Dan Morgan, both early round picks in the last two years.
The Redskins’ most notable guard is Mike Williams, who has failed to make a name for himself, in spite of being taken 4th overall by the Bills in ‘02. Washington does offer a couple of LB options, however. London Fletcher is an exceptional MLB and team leader. He’s 36 years old, though. We could also conceivably go Brian Orakpo here, which I suppose would give us emergency DE coverage in the 4-3, even though Orakpo has never played DE in the NFL. Likewise, Martez Wilson could play inside in a pinch, being that his ideal position has yet to be established. Jarvis Jenkins, this year’s 2nd round pick out of Clemson, is their only true DE of note.
Like the Redskins, the Bengals offer a couple of decent LB options, Keith Rivers outside and Rey Maualuga inside. Like Witherspoon, he can also play outside. Their best guard is Bobbie Williams, who is arguably a top 10 talent in the league that position. He’s 34 years old, but we’re fairly young across the OL otherwise, so maybe his veteran leadership would serve its purpose there. Their best pure DE is Carlos Dunlap, who recorded 9 sacks in limited action last season. They also offer two unspectacular ’tweener OLB/DE prospects in Michael Johnson and unproven rookie Dontay Moch.
Of course, both DE and LB are lagniappe. We could conceivably ignore both and just go with the BPA from one of these teams. Considering the other positions we could possibly draft, I don’t see a whole lot of options out there.
Gibril Wilson as a third SS would be an improvement over Roman Harper, imo. Jake Locker or Andy Dalton might make for an interesting development QB prospect. Albert Haynesworth is a malcontent in Washington, but there’s no denying his raw talent, when motivated. He could flourish alongside someone of Mario Williams’s caliber in the 4-3. He could also push Ngata outside in certain situations, thereby fortifying the DE position without giving up a lot of ground inside. Speaking of malcontents, Vince Young is still available as a Titan, giving us mobility at the QB position and maybe someone to work in on gadget plays. Lastly, either Michael Griffin or Chris Hope would both fortify the safety position beyond what is required by rule.
"I was not on the boat in question" -Darren Sharper
I see that I pick as soon as the next one is in. Here’s my plan:
If Jimbo03 does not take Rob Bironis from Tennessee, I will.
If Jimbo03 does take Rob Bironis, I’ll take either Rey Maualuga or Keith Rivers. I’ll give you guys a chance to debate on which of the two would be the best option.
Stop wearing a wishbone where your backbone ought to be. Would you be convicted in court of being a Christian? Happiness is shared, and comes from sharing.
by Preston J. Gary, Jr. on Jun 23, 2011 9:46 PM CDT reply actions
Why would you (or Jimbo03) take a lagniappe front seven position ahead of the mandatory guard? You’re giving the guy behind you zero options. Mike Williams would have to be the pick at that point. In deciding between Mike and Bobbie Williams — I would much prefer Bobbie, but that’s your call — you’re both getting options. Ponysaints would actually be afforded many, many options, as I already covered. Take one (a guard) for the team, unselfish Preston. I did.
"I was not on the boat in question" -Darren Sharper
Btw, had kicker and guard been covered prior to Clark, we’d still have Gresham, Cooley and Scaife (or Cook) + any Colt INCLUDING Clark and Tamme to choose from. Granted, Clark might still be the Colts pick, but look at all the options you rule out by pulling the trigger early.
To afford your fellow Saints GMs as much flexibility as possible, it might be a good idea to tackle the less talented teams first and to refrain from completely filling any one position, at least until it can no longer be avoided.
That’s what I’m getting at. When you’re not REQUIRED to carry three TEs and there are still mandatory spots to fill on the roster — OG, K — it CAN be avoided. I pretty much knew guard would be swept by the wayside all draft. Had I not taken Snee, we’d probably be looking at BOTH Williamses as our mandatory OG depth, with no wiggle room whatsoever.
"I was not on the boat in question" -Darren Sharper
We have Jahri and Nicks as starters.
It’s ok. RELAX. It’s not like we have Shanle as our starting OLB because somebody went Gary Kubiak and wanted another TE.

"I rejected those answers. Instead, I chose something different. I chose the impossible. I chose...Rapture!"
If you’re deadset on one of the Bengals LBs — as opposed to one of the Redskins LBs, or another position from one of those two teams — I’d go with Maualuga. I like Rivers more, but he isn’t going to set the world on fire as a pass rusher on a defense this talented. If you were looking for that in the pick, Orakpo and Dunlap both seem like better options, imo. Maualuga is probably better suited as an ILB, but he’s never played the position at the pro level, meaning he’d be listed as an OLB with fill in capability. Either way, you wouldn’t be robbing Peter to pay Paul, you’d have a LB who has actually played the strong side (a first) and it would keep Martez Wilson’s slightly inferior versatility from seeping to the forefront prematurely.
That said, I think the best mandatory OG/LB combination definitely involves Bobbie Williams, meaning the ideal choice (if LB at all) should be between Orakpo and Fletcher. From there, it’s a toss up. Without that gun pointed at my head, I probably say screw it and go with Haynesworth as the BPA. Otherwise … Fletcher, I think. Just because I love the 3-4 potential on this team and wouldn’t want to see that taken away due to a thin and/or inexperienced interior, in the event of an injury. The experience factor Fletcher brings to the table simply dwarfs the raw talent only resumes of all of these other inside/outside LB prospects.

Freeney or Mathis would have been more useful. Maybe even Brackett. You could have always taken Cooley later, who could serve as a backup FB.

Btw, I think Ponysaints should be a gentleman and pass his pick to Kat. Whatever happened to the chivalry in this group? Heh.

I actually did look ahead, a few times. That was exactly why I would have preferred to pick Pouncey off of Pittsburgh. He would have given us depth at all 3 interior positions, while allowing us to take any of Cincanatti’s LB’s. Pouncey and Rey/Keith is a much better combination on our team than Harrison and whatever Guard you can grab from Cincinatti or Washington.
That said, what are your thoughts on Nate Livings? He’s a starter, only been in the league 4 years. I’d much rather take Leon Hall or Jonathen Joseph than any guard left.
If you look at the Saints official roster, they currently have 4 guards, but I’ve never heard of the two back-ups and doubt both make the final 53 (Roger Allen and Brian De La Puente). If you look at depth charts around the league, many teams only carry 3 guards.
If you believe Bobby Williams is the best guard available, and we must pick a guard, I’ll leave Cincinatti’s roster to someone else.
The Saints have carried 5 safeties in most of the past years. That position has been critical on special teams as well as in our nickle and dime defenses. I would like to debate between SS Laron Landry and FS OJ Otagwe. Both are perfectly suited for each position. OJ was a little banged up but perennially is a tackling machine and turnover forcer when it comes to fumbles and int’s. Your thoughts?

I like Otogwe. Landry seems to be a safety that just like to demolish people. That’s all well and good, but I don’t think he’s as sound of a player.
I considered OJ Otagwe, but not over Orakpo
but Harrison (Pitt) squashed that, still weak at G, Wash/Cinn are crap at that pos. Landry SS (local LSU/Metairie) bites on those pump fakes, both are relatively young guys.

Bobbie Williams is far from crap at guard. He led all interior linemen in pass blocking efficiency in 2010, according to Pro Football Focus. Will Montgomery ranked 10th for the Redskins, but he’s officially listed as a center.
Pouncey is a center that can play guard, no different than Wood. He wouldn’t have counted as a guard had someone drafted him. We would still need a fourth legitimate guard on the roster. Swing players are only to serve as lagniappe as necessary and mitigate the urgency at those secondary positions as the draft progresses, NOT fulfill the minimum roster requirements at those positions. I truly don’t understand what’s so difficult about this concept to grasp.
As far as Livings goes, he ranks near the bottom on this same efficiency chart. Over a three year span (2008-10), Williams still ranks 3rd overall in this particular category. In both cases, this is higher than Evans, Snee or Nicks. He’s supposedly ranked 6th among run blocking guards in 2010, but I can’t find the chart to support that. I’m merely going by the Bengals article that led me to these. Regardless, he should be the pick at guard. No ifs, and or buts about that.
Now, as far as the Redskins go, I don’t really care what you do. There are no REQUIRED positions left outside of guard. I gave my top suggestions. In order, Haynesworth (BPA), Fletcher (to bring the ILB count up to four, thereby providing adequate 2x starter depth for the 3-4), Orakpo (same logic, only with Wilson swinging over to help out inside, if need be). Orakpo can also swing forward to DE in the 4-3, which helps somewhat with Smith out for four games. Beyond that, his age is the big selling point. Again, you have Wilson in the corps to offset that lone con of Fletcher’s, at least from an average LB’s age perspective.
As far as safeties go, I agree with Jimbo. Landry is a lot like Harper, in that he’s always going for broke with the kill shots. Of the two, I’d much rather Atogwe at FS. Former Stanford Cardinal, so you know he’s got the intelligence. He’d also allow Jenkins to swing over to CB in a pinch, without thinning the position. If you think a fifth safety is the way to go, that’s who I would suggest.
You could also go Trent Williams or Jammal Brown and fortify the tackle position even more so. While I don’t really think that’s necessary, I have about as much insight as you do into what we truly have in Charles Brown and Jordan Gross will be 31 before the season starts. Brown’s 30 himself though, so Williams seems like the wiser pick there.

I’ll wait to confer with ColdPizza, then we’ll come to a decision on who to grab off of Washington’s roster. The last pick can have Cincinatti.

Since I'll be leaving for the weekend
and PJG is determined to use all of his alotted time. I’ll do as CP suggested and pass my pick to KAT. She would get it anyway by default, but this way I can state “Chivalry Lives”.
Thanks Ponysaints -if you can get your pick in under the clock you should. Though good to know chivalry is not dead. Maybe some of that will rub off on cp.

Make the damn pick. It’s our team not CP’s team. Choose who YOU think will be the best fit for us, based on the positions/players remaining. I’m all for Haynesworth, Orakpo and Atogwe from the Skins, and Bobby Williams from the Bungles. Just me though. Make your own pick.

Otis Hudson
Nate Livings
Evan Mathis

So…now what? Do we put this team together on Madden and see how they do?
And just as you have planted your seed in the ground, I'm going to plant my seed in you.
Yes. That’s your assignment. You’ll have to create Jordan, Ingram and Wilson, though.
"I was not on the boat in question" -Darren Sharper
I might actually do it haha…I’ll sim it through a couple seasons and see what happens, it’ll be a while though. I work today and tomorrow until 9pm. but have 4 days off after that
And just as you have planted your seed in the ground, I'm going to plant my seed in you.
I would mimic Jason Pierre-Paul, Jahvid Best and Daryl Washington’s rookie ratings from the prior Madden on those three. That should be pretty close, in terms of what Madden will soon rate them. Just be sure to change their heights and weights to actual.
"I was not on the boat in question" -Darren Sharper
Sounds about right…I have Washinton on my current team on there (I usually do fantasy drafts right off the bat), but he’s second string behind a rookie I drafted last year. (I’m in my second season on that franschise) I’ve got a pretty good team right now though: Aaron Rodgers at QB, Dez Bryant, Meachem, and Lance Moore at WR, Michael Turner at RB w/ Spiller backing him up (3rd down guy too), a rookie TE thats pretty good. On defense I have Rolando McClain at MLB, Brian Cushing, and that rookie previously mentioned. CB’s I have Justin Tryon…he was my nickel CB last season but I think i boosted his stats (on accident) by always blitzing him and he ended up with a S***-ton of sacks that year and I think ended up easily leading the league (as a CB). I forgot who my other CB’s are, but I have Nate Allen at safety and Taylor Mays. on the DL I have Everson Griffen, Big Sed, and also can’t think of the other 2 guys off the top of my head. So far this year I’m 7-0.
And just as you have planted your seed in the ground, I'm going to plant my seed in you.
Speaking of Everson Griffen…glad we didn’t take him last year: (via Wiki)
“On January 28th, 2011, Griffen was arrested in Los Angeles for public intoxication. Three days later, he was arrested again after he was found driving with an invalid drivers license. He then tried to flee on foot only to be tasered after allegedly grabbing an officer in the crotch area”
And just as you have planted your seed in the ground, I'm going to plant my seed in you.
I started to on my break, it’s tougher than I thought. I had to create a new team (custom team) do a “Fantasy Draft” where I had the choice of every player on my team…but it was dumb and made me fill in the entire team before I started taking backup players…and the game didn’t have a few of the players we drafted at all. Patrick Mannelly
was one of them so it wasn’t that big of a deal (I made Gross the LS because he already was on the bench on offense anyways, and not to mention he was the #1 rated LS of the players we had . Now I just need to go make those few rookies and such.
And just as you have planted your seed in the ground, I'm going to plant my seed in you.
And that’s the closest he’ll ever come in a Bengals uniform.

Before you start a franchise in Madden, edit the rosters. Change a player’s position. For Instance, Darrel Revis is ranked 12 at QB as opposed to 99 at CB. After changing his position, cut him. Then, sign him to the Saints at a 7 year contract. It will be very cheap with no guaranteed money. Next, edit him again and change him back to CB. Now you have one of the best players at the lowest possible price for 7 years.
save the roster to whatever name, then start a franchise using that roster. After your franchise is started, go back and delete the roster file that way your updated roster becomes the default one for anytime you actually play anyone for real.
In franchise mode, if you leave a bunch of free agents, like Peyton Manning as a LT on the roster when you start, you can sign him to pennies, and trade him back to the Colts for a first round pick. If you’ve got the mind to do this, all 10 of your picks can be round 1 choices.
Be sure to turn trade deadline off before you start franchise. This way, when the season is nearing end, the team drafting first will trade their first round choice for the team drafting last. I don’t know why they’ll easily swap like that, but you have to do it just before the season is over and draft position is set in stone. They live under the rule they’ll do better than you, even if they’re winless and you’re undefeated.
This way, you can now draft all 10 of your souped up players from NCAA.
Now, the only problem is who to cut.

Simmed through one season w/ our team...
and you wouldn’t believe what happened:
We had a decent season finishing 12-4 but second in the the NFC South to Atlanta (by one game)…still following?…so then we were in the Wildcard game, against the Seahawks, who were 8-8 and won the NFC West….go ahead and guess what happened next…you got it! We lost! By the exact same margin of 5 points! the score was 28-23 and we were making a comeback at the end of the game, we scored a TD from Brees to Gates in the 4th quarter, but couldn’t keep the Seahawks off the field.
I was laughing histerically for a while after that, and slowly turned into crying…oh! you’re still here..my apologies…Yeah, I’m gonna try to run the second season and see if we do any better. and from what I remember:
Brees , Long, and AP made the PB on offense and our entire LB core (Vilma, Willis, Matthews, and Harrison) all made the Pro Bowl. None of our WR’s had over 1k yards (I think Gates had the most w/ 900) so I guess Drew was spreading the ball around as usual. AP had over 1500 yards and 12 TDs on the ground.
"I don't want to be a product of my environment. I want my environment to be a product of me."
Any key injuries? We don’t really have a lot of depth at a few positions. Also, are we playing teams as we know them or did you have a fantasy draft? If the latter is the case, a few teams are bound to be better off, considering they’re not tied to the one player from each team rule. Not to mention, some have a better nucleus to begin with, in terms of individual talent.
"I was not on the boat in question" -Darren Sharper
I didn’t notice any injuries, although I didn’t look to far into that. The teams are almost exactly how they are in the league now (so there are “twins” of every player on our team except our own original Saints players). The only thing that was off is that it was the “2010” season since it was last years madden (2011) so we had the same schedule as last year and the rookies on the other teams did not exist. It’s not perfect, but it was the best I could do. Our team was rated a “99” also…so it’s not like the game thought we had a bad team…just bad juju I guess
"I don't want to be a product of my environment. I want my environment to be a product of me."
Ah. There’s no way to nix those borrowed players, I guess. Not that it would make much difference. You’re only facing one per game.
"I was not on the boat in question" -Darren Sharper
Maybe if you swapped them out for the 31 we didn’t keep. Still, it probably wouldn’t make a lot of difference.
"I was not on the boat in question" -Darren Sharper
I’ll try it again for another season, we’ve got a lot of young guys that could still progress. I think Suh was rated fairly low (because he was a rookie) and should blossom in the next couple of years.
