NFL Top 100: Top 10 Edition

For those who have been following, this Sunday is the NFL Top 100 Finale. The top 10 will be revealed, and it seems fairly easy to determine who will be on it.

Tom Brady

Drew Brees

Peyton Manning

Andre Johnson

Adrian Peterson

Darelle Revis

Troy Polamalu

Ed Reed

Ray Lewis

Julius Peppers.

The only question seems to be, what order should they be in? Make the jump for my top 10.

Star-divide

10. Julius Peppers, DE, Chicago Bears.

The most physically dominant DE in the game. Can turn a game with his play.

9. Andre Johnson, WR, Houston Texans.

How do you stop him?

8. Ed Reed, FS, Baltimore Ravens.

Case could be made for him to be higher than Polamalu, but injuries have hit hard lately.

7. Adrian Peterson, RB, Minnesota Vikings.

Makes every run like it's his last. Never stops his feet.

6. Troy Polamalu, FS, Pittsburgh Steelers.

Physically dominating. Pittsburgh's record with and without him shows how important he is.

5. Ray Lewis, LB, Baltimore Ravens.

Still the best 3-4 ILB in the game. Pretty much a player-coach.

4. Drew Brees, QB, New Orleans Saints

One of the best leaders in the game. Can take the team on his shoulders and win.

3. Darrelle Revis, CB, New York Jets.

Can be left on an island with any receiver in the league and still shut them down.

2. Peyton Manning, QB, Indianapolis Colts.

Turned Pierre Garcon into a star.

1. Tom Brady, QB, New England Patriots.

Brought Deion Branch back from the grave, and absolutely dominated opposition.

What's your thoughts? Should Drew rank lower? Who got snubbed?

Ray Lewis has never been a 3-4 ILB

he is a 4-3 MLB and the best 3-4 ILB is Patrick Willis

Players who should be in the Hall of Fame: Pat TIllman, Dwight White, Donnie Shell, L.C. Greenwood, Ray Guy, Steve Tasker, Jack Butler, Greg Lloyd, Andy Russell, Cris Carter, Kevin Greene, Curtis Martin, Willie Roaf, Andre Reed and Jerry Kramer

You don’t watch many Baltimore games, do you? The Ravens haven’t played the 4-3 exclusively since 2005. They ran both schemes extensively in 2006. Lewis has been primarily a 3-4 ILB ever since.

He was also a 3-4 ILB his rookie season and from 2002-04.

Yeah...

The are primarily a 3-4 team and have been for a while.

They do run some packages in the 4-3, they are a base 3-4 team.

But it's like the Cowboys 3-4

were basically they run a 4-3. Because I’ve yet to see Suggs drop into coverage, but then again when he turns Jonathan Scott into a turnstile with great frequency why?

Revis

I voted Revis.
I’d argue he is in a class of his own at his position, currently. Consistently, completely neutralizes an opponents best reciever and forces offenses to change thier strategy.

Brady, Manning, and Brees are elite at a more important position, but they are all comparable.

Lewis, Polamalu and Reed are on the back nine of their careers.

Andre Johnson and Peterson are beasts, but not as consistent as Revis.

Not sure why a guy who half asses the majority of snaps like Peppers is even in the top 20.

Revis ahead of all three quarterback’s? So you’d take Revis before you took Tom Brady in a league-wide redraft?

I would. Those three QBs only represent half of the last ten SB winners combined. Even if you struck out on Roethlisberger and Rodgers as proven fall back plans, there’s a slew of other young QBs on the rise that are bound to be viewed in a similar light before all is said and done. That said, I’d likely take Thomas, Long or Clady over any of them in a redraft, Revis included.

by coldpizza on Jun 28, 2011 6:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Not to point out the obvious in your analysis, cp, but Revis represents 0 SB wins (or even appearances) in the last decade. Pointing out Super Bowl wins is a rather specious argument in this case. I do agree there is a bigger difference between the quality of Revis’ play and the alternatives, and the quality of the QB’s you mentioned and the alternatives, but citing Super Bowl wins as the justification without comparing Revis’ SB’s is mildly disingenuine.

Free your mind

by theprogrammerman on Jun 29, 2011 3:46 AM CDT up reply actions

I was actually pointing out their LACK of wins, i.e., the five they failed to capture. No position should be exhaulted to a great extent based on SB wins, imo. Comparing regular season stats with guys like Rivers, Favre, Roethlisberger, Rodgers, Young, Trent Green, Steve Beuerlein, Gannon, Culpepper, Hasselbeck, Palmer, etc., over the years, I feel those three very much are in the minds of most. They’re overrated. Not in the “not good” way, but rather in the definition of being overrated way. Revis isn’t for obvious reasons, but even if he HAD won a Super Bowl, he wouldn’t be. Ty Law was a great CB, but he was never considered leaps and bounds better than Champ Bailey, for example. The Lombardi blows QBs’ reputations out of the water like no other position.

also MVPs. They’re not very based on who was the most important to their team but more on career and popularity

Revis only plays half of the field. Throw it to the other side of the field, and there’s nothing he can do about it. Take out a good quarterback’s number 1 option, and he can still find other ways to move the ball down the field. There is no way a top corner should be rated above a top QB.

Using that logic, all 96 QBs in the league should rank higher than Revis.

Apples to oranges. Value assessment lies in peer comparison (apples to apples), followed by differential comparison (orange to oranges).

by coldpizza on Jun 30, 2011 10:42 PM CDT up reply actions

What you’re hitting on is the value of the position, not the individual player himself. If you had two corners the caliber of Revis, they wouldn’t be throwing to either side, thereby making the opponent’s offense extremely predictable. What would a second Manning or Brees bring to your offense? Virtually nothing, outside of depth and a few new wrinkles on gadget plays.

"I was not on the boat in question" -Darren Sharper

by coldpizza on Jul 1, 2011 8:17 AM CDT up reply actions

also if you take away half the field (or the opponents main WR)…it is what it is. What if you’re the Cardinals, and really all you have is Larry Fitzgerald for your receiving unit (heck for the whole offense). With Revis you can take out the teams best player and essesntially shuts down the offense. and to go along with Revis being considered one of the (at least top 5 player) top players in the NFL, is the league getting more passing oriented each year. The CB position is becoming more and more important.

And just as you have planted your seed in the ground, I'm going to plant my seed in you.

by GRlZZ on Jul 1, 2011 8:51 AM CDT up reply actions

I think he and Jake Long are the two most rare talents in the NFL today. QB is still probably the most important position when building a team, though.

2 years ago would be a rookie

that was taken in the 6th round. He puts up fantasy points on occasion now much like Henderson and Meachem do. He didn’t turn into the next Colston though

And a lot of that is based on the opportunity he was given, after Anthony Gonzalez went down. Same with Colston, when Stallworth wound up in Payton’s dog house early on. Most teams have better depth at the position, so guys like that aren’t likely to get that many reps on offense. Hats off to anyone who takes advantage of the opportunities they’re given. I’m just saying, let’s not be naive in thinking they would have wrestled those starting gigs away from someone with a more established rapport with the starting QB — Brees would have been just as new to Stallworth — polished route runner, making considerably more money based on draft position and/or past success, etc. It’s just as much about being in the right place at the right time, as it is shining your own light, once you’ve been given that stage.

Austin Collie’s put up similiar numbers when healthy, btw. Indianapolis is a lot like the Saints, in that when you’re passing roughly 40 times per game, SOMEONE’S bound to look good statistically. Garcon and Collie just happen to be the marginal talent cashing in, not unlike Colston and Moore. To varying degrees, of course.

my list out of those guys

1. Brees- of course
2. Brady- wins in the playoffs
3. Peterson- RB is the 2nd most position besides QB
4. Manning- doesn’t win in the playoffs
5. Revis- shuts down your best WR and let’s you do alot of things defensively
6. Ray Lewis- how good would the Ravens have been without him
7. Johnson- takes 2 players to lock him down
8. Polamalu- slowing down a bit but has the ability to make big time plays
9. Reed- Best ball hawk in the NFL
10. Peppers- had to put him in my top 10 list from that list of players. Not a big fan of his.

Offensive players can have a much bigger difference in a game than defensive players because they touch the ball alot more usually.

Get real with the top 100

Here’s an article I was really enjoying.

Has any player in history lost more big games than Manning? Doubtful
. I agreed with the guy (Nick Canepa) wholeheartedly, up to here:
Anyway, for what it’s worth, here is my top 10 — Revis
GAAAAAA!!! I stopped reading here:
Revis, playing an impossible position under impossible rules, may be the best shutdown corner I’ve seen, and that includes Deion Sanders.
GAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!

It’s impossible to do a good top 100 list. And I guess that’s the point, to stir up discussion.
