sorry to disappoint
Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe reports an NFL source with direct knowledge of negotiations said Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning and Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints are requesting to be exempt from the franchise tag for the rest of their careers.

Sirius Radio’s Ross Tucker was way ahead of the curve on this one. A few weeks ago when we got whiffs that the players named in the anti-trust suit may (maybe were) asking for this, Tucker blew up.
Here’s the deal— whatever leverage it takes for those maybe 10 players to be granted such a provision, is leverage that could have been used to get something for all 1800 players. It’s completely selfish. If you’ve seen at all how these negotiations have been going over the last _ amount of time, you’ve got to figure it will take a significant amount of pressure/leverage for the owners to cave in to that demand.
Yet here’s the question— what did those 10 players GIVE UP that would have benefited the entire NFLPA? Little selfish p***** need to stop playing f****** games and get this deal done.

So at a time when they’re supposed to be representing all players, what are Jackson and Mankins and Manning and Brees doing? They’re trying to cut their own deals. It’s the height of hypocrisy from Breesus. This should be front page news.

Brees has disappointed me multiple times throughout this process. The players are going to come back from this lockout to find that their fans will have started to resent them.

Before we condemn Drew to Hell or worse…..the Raiders, let’s get some solid confirmation on this. These d-bags in the media have been wrong before. Remember how they told us a CBA deal was 80-90% finished over a month ago? Who the hell are these NFL sources? Are they the same sources people like Mike Freeman and Jason Cole always cite and then later are proven wrong? Let’s wait at least until Drew makes a statement about it before passing judgement.
Now, please excuse while I go buy some more candles for my Breesus shrine.

I personally think it is more likely that we are looking at a case of people that either have been or probably will be under the franchise tag looking for a way to avoid it. The fact that there is precedent for it just strengthens their case. The only reason it probably comes out now is because what else is left for the vulchers reporters to talk about if the deal hasn’t been signed?

Exactly my other point
People are trying to get this out now, so some ass like Jerry Richardson or Bob Kraft, who forced this whole thing in the first place, call up a reporter and leak this to ratchet up the public pressure and create internal pressure.
This might have always been a part of the deal. I’d like to hear comment from the actual players.

Another question is
Whether this is new or not. They might have listed this as something they wanted included early on, and its just coming out now that the deal is nearly done (could totally see a bitter owner like Richardson leaking this).
Because there is precedent for it, like the White case in 93.

This is nothing new— it’s something they’ve been asking for (or rumored to be) for about a month if not more.
For the sake of posterity, the players in the Reggie White case were given the same exemption. So on one hand, it doesn’t hurt to ask since precedent has already been set the last time a group of players sued the NFL. But on the other hand, they should instead use that leverage for something that benefits all players.

The NFL will have to satisfy the 10 named plaintiffs in Brady vs. NFL antitrust case in order to complete the deal for its new collective bargaining agreement with the NFL Players Association.
As named plaintiffs, players including Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Logan Mankins and Vincent Jackson would be entitled to compensation as part of any settlement.
Quote:
One high-ranking NFLPA executive told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen: “Any media reports of a last-minute power play by players are misleading and erroneous. There are unresolved issues and we remain focused on resolving them.”
Quote:
Sources told ESPN.com’s John Clayton that neither Jackson nor Mankins have been contacted recently about a settlement to the Brady lawsuit. However, the NFLPA is drawing up a draft of the settlement to review Tuesday, a player source told Schefter. If any of the plaintiffs were unhappy with settlement terms, they could object and opt out of the class action. That would not derail a settlement and would not, in itself, stop a new collective bargaining agreement.
Quote:
According to ESPN legal analyst Roger Cossack, if any of the named plaintiffs opt out, the antitrust suit would remain alive in federal court. The question then would be who would finance the suit?" Cossack said. "Who would pay the legal fees for Mankins and Jackson? Unless you’re Bill Gates, you don’t want to get into an antitrust case with the NFL

Makes no sense
Why would Brees demand something he can get already? If he wants his contract he’s going to get it, that you can bet on. Why would Drew put himself before the entire NFL selfishly after hosting OBA’s, and picking up the tab I might add. Drew will stand up for his convictions, that much we’ve seen. He puts others before himself, and is a true leader both on and off the field. The only thing that Drew needs to change is throwing INT’s (still love ya Drew)

He is not currently exempt from the franchise tag.

That's true
Players usually despise the franchise tag instead of a long term contract, my guess is feeling like they are not important enough to commit to. I doubt Drew has that problem.

In hind sight
I guess I’m speculating as well. I don’t get paid to sell headlines, I’m going by my own sense of reasoning. Drew needs to settle for this franchise exemption as much as coldpizza goes with the flow and just agrees with everyone (lol).

Just win baby
I don’t know if this is true or not, and I don’t really care.
Brees can be a d***, he can eat a d***, he can come over to my house and f*** my sister as long as he keeps leading the Saints to victory. So what if he screws over the billionaire owners a bit? It’s not like he’s some QB who kills dogs or sexually assaults two women for fun. If this is true, I can live with it, no problem.

Lot's of conflicting stories
“An NFL source with direct knowledge of negotiations said Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning and Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints are requesting to be exempt from the franchise tag for the rest of their careers.”
Greg A. Bedard, Boston Globe
“Sources told Yahoo! that quarterbacks Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints and Peyton Manning of the Indianapolis Colts also could demand a franchise tag exemption, although another source said each is less likely to cause a problem with the sides so close to a deal.”

It’s not unheard oft— the plantiffs in Reggie White vs NFL 1993 lawsuit all got exemptions from all future tags. It is meant to protect them from “revenge” tatics bitter owners may have because they were the ones putting their neck out and taking on big bad NFL in court.
I’m just kind of shocked they actually asked for the same exemptions, not because its not in their right and best intrest, but because the concession only helps 10 players, while they are supposed to represent all.
That said, I’ve read it and heard it (on Sirius) that whatever the outcome of the exemption demand, it won’t hold up the CBA and the CBA will be presented and approved by players on Wednesday and owners on Thursday— regardless of the status of the exemption. The status of the exemption will only affect the globalized settlement of court cases and how soon the league year can begin.
So while they’re egg on the face act will not get in the way of the CBA, it may delay the start of the league year if they stand firm— which it looks like they wont.

for those that are mad that Brees doesn't want to be franchised
and didn’t fight for the other 1800 players or w/e there is…why does Brees need to fight for them to not be franchised? The should put their names on the suit against the NFL. File your own lawsuit against the NFL. To me it would be alot like being for freedom against England but not wanting to sign the Declaration of Independence or fight in the war. You want it but you want someone else to do all the working part of it for you.
