Cleveland Browns Sign Usama Young

The Saints have lost another free agent. Usama Young, the saints backup safety, has signed a contract with the Cleveland Browns. The news comes via nola.com:

Former New Orleans Saints safety Usama Young has agreed to a deal with the Cleveland Browns, according to a league source who confirmed an earlier report by beat Cleveland sports talk radio station WKNR.

This should come as no surprise since we had already heard the rumors.

Usama only had six starts in his career with New Orleans. He played in a total of 52 regular season games, accumulating 14 pass deflections and 3 INT. Usama was never a star player, but he did his job. Most importantly, the Saints lose a serious special teams contributor, and lose another member of the Super Bowl winning team.

Good luck to Usama. He was a class act, one of the nicest players on the team and the first player ever to be interviewed here on Canal Street Chronicles.

He played last year for $1.1M. I hope he got a raise. Good luck, Usama.

We have already replaced him with the dude from Miami

We replaced our number 1 fill in at safety with a guy who’s a special teamer only and an UDFA last year….trust me that’s not replacing. That’s called replacing Usama Young’s backups’ backup.

Still you gotta wonder if we traded for the guy had something to do with it…

disagree....

Young was steady at FS and on special teams and a lousy corner. The guy from Miami is a much better “gunner” on kick-coverage. Also, we drafted J. Patrick (and just signed him), so hopefully that’s an upgrade from when Young was forced to play the position. N. Bussey (who signed earlier) and will also be a better special teams player, though IMO Bussey will likely be converted from a LB into a strong safety. But the best thing about allowing Young to walk is that this allows the Saints more financial wiggle-room to try and retain Sharper. Sharper is fully recovered from his knee injury and can contribute far more than Young could at back-up FS or in sub-packages. If Sharper wants to stay a Saint, he can have a legit shot at another SuperBowl ring, while also seeing enough playing time to try and break the interception record now that Young is gone.

Amaya’s a strong safety. Nothing to do with Young.

Take a look at that Peyton Manning to Pierre Garcon TD pass in SB XLIV for my answer. That’s probably not fair. Young had to jump in quickly when Greer got injured and Manning took advantage. Also, Harper didn’t provide much help.

I like Usama. He’s a very likable guy. I wish him the best.

I liked Usama, but he wasn't a HUGE contributor

Although, correct me if i’m wrong, but didn’t he make that game saving tackle in the first Panthers game last season?

This probably couldn’t be helped, even if the Saints were ridiculous enough to match Cleveland. I’m happy for him to finally get a legitimate starting chance, though I will admit that I was envisioning him possibly playing in the backfield on passing downs with Jenkins. I do wonder if Fujita endorsed him to Mike Holmgren.

I wanted the same thing. I agree with cc58. That pic is going to give me nightmares.

So long Usama and thanks!

Good luck and I hope I run into you again next year when you come home to Lanham for the kid’s camp. We’ll be watching for your fundraiser. Browns got a hard worker and a helluva nice guy!
