Saints Release Cornerback Randall Gay
In an unsurprising move, the Saints have decided to release veteran cornerback Randall Gay. Scott Cody from WWL-TV breaks the news through his Twitter account:
per league source, Randall Gay has been released by the #saints... A chance he re-signs with team, will explore options now
Again, not surprising considering Gay was reportedly scheduled to make $3.5 million this year, way too much for an aging cornerback with concussion issues. If Gay returns to the Saints, which Cody suggests is a possibility, it will be for significantly less money. Gay may also decide to simply retire.
The good news is that the team now has a little more money to play around with and sign other players.

Let's assume the media was right and we had 105 million (15 million cap space)
Letting Reggie go saved around 12 million.
Cutting Gay saves 3.5 million. So not counting all the other signings, the Saints have ~30.5 million to play with.

ESPN said trading Reggie free up 16 million.

They forgot to include his 3.5 million signing bonus.
Which the Saints are obligated to.

They’re not obligated to it, unless they agreed to absorb it. When you trade a player, you typically wash your hands of their entire contract, signing bonuses included. Had they cut him, that would not have been the case.

They don’t have to PAY any more money to Reggie, no.
But the 3.5 million is not actually NEW signing bonus, it’s dead money left over from his OLD bonuses. That money was PREVIOUSLY paid to him by the Saints but never accounted for against our previous year’s cap numbers. Now that he’s gone, it has to be applied against this year’s cap.
It seems that the old cap system is still around, which earlier rumors led me to believe would not. They just eliminated a bunch of accounting tricks to pretend to spend money when they really weren’t.
that's not very much considering some of the FA starters they have yet to agree to terms with
For Randall’s sake, I hope he retires. Chronic head injury is not something you want to deal with at age 30 (or any age for that matter).
Especially when you have the proven yourself as a champ for 2 great teams. Retire while you’re at the top of your game and healthy. If not, you know as soon as a CB goes down the Saints will likely call.
"I can't believe what I just saw. You could have taken a knee! This isn't Detroit man, this is the Super Bowl!!!"
I can't see him doing this -
Gay may also decide to simply retire.
If he would take a serious pay cut he still might be able to pocket another $mil before he retires.
Just hope he doesn’t buy a damn car dealership!!!
Fat, dumb, and happy. Hell, two out of three ain't bad!
