Update: Current New Orleans Saints Free Agency & Roster Breakdown
Before I get started, let's first give a round of applause to Sean Payton and Mickey Loomis. Like the 2011 NFL Draft, I think they're doing a tremendous job with this highly unusual and fast-paced free agency period. I really like all the moves they're making. With each one my excitement for the 2011 season grows. If I were handing out free agency grades, I'd give it an A.
Yesterday I broke down the Saints official roster so everyone could get a better idea of where the team currently sits personnel-wise. But with things changing so quickly during this expedited free agency period, I figured I should update everything again. Here is where the Saints stand now after all of yesterday's activity.
Currently, the Saints have 79 players under contract or agreed to terms, including the 21 undrafted free agents.
They still have all three rookies left to sign, but those are all but definite. I would hope to see at least Martez Wilson sign today, if not either of the two first rounders (Jordan & Ingram).
That gives the Saints a total of 82 players on their official roster.
With a roster limit of 90, that leaves 8 open roster spots left to fill, either by re-signing one of their own free agents or bringing in a new free agent player. Unless they make more cuts to make more room.
Still a priority for the team would be to have Carl Nicks sign his tender offer and to re-sign tight end David Thomas and safety Roman Harper. Hopefully those both happen today. Other players they might want to think about holding on to are Heath Evans, Zach Strief, Jonathan Goodwin and Anthony Hargrove. That's seven of the eight open spots right there.
The Saints have been rumored to show interest in defensive end Cullen Jenkins. Something to keep your eye on today.
With the signing of Darren Sproles, I would say Courtney Roby may now be left out in the cold. I don't expect the Saints to re-sign him.
There's a definite crowd at running back and also at linebacker. Free agents like Ladell Betts, Julius Jones, Kawika Mitchell and Anthony Waters don't appear to have a good shot at getting offered contracts by the Saints. If the Saints plan to sign any more players at either of those positions, they may release someone from that position to make room.
If the Saints need to make room to sign a veteran free agent, I would expect them to release one of their recent undrafted free agent signings at either the long snapper, fullback or linebacker position.
Below you'll find a roster breakdown by position. Then you'll be treated to a complete, up-to-date roster (as of the publishing of this post) and full sortable Saints roster. It includes the three remaining not-yet-but-soon-to-be-signed 2011 draft picks. That's followed by a list of the Saints remaining unsigned free agents, also in an easy to use, sortable table. But first, a quick recap of yesterday's action
In case you missed it:

Cleveland Browns Sign Usama Young

8 open roster spots. Let's see
Harper, Goodwin, Nicks, D. Thomas, M Mitchell, Brandon Mebane, D. Sharper and Z. Strief.
Peyton, I can eat Oreos faster than you!!!!
M. Mitchell or Mebane ain't gonna make it.
I expect the saints to sign one maybe two more big name FA’s. That leaves these guys out in the cold.

I’m thinking Nicks, Goodwin, Strief, Charlston, Hargrove, Harper, Evans and D. Thomas. Anybody else and we can cut some of those camp body LBs. I’m looking at you, Ezra Butler.
"I want to hand this trophy to the MVP of the Super Bowl -- and the MVP of the entire league.''

I wouldn't mind
Letting Sharper walk either. I would just like to have him because he adds depth in the secondary. Depth at FS and CB, because he can come in for Sharper and let Jenkins move to corner in a pinch.
Peyton, I can eat Oreos faster than you!!!!
Sharper wasn’t specal last year.

I know I’ll take sh*t for this, but dude, you’re a professional blogger:
Their = Possessive
There = Indiciative
They’re = They are
You really like all the moves ‘they are’ making. I know people hate grammar douchebags, but I am one, and it took me a long time and the support of my family to admit it. I’m only doing this because this is my favorite blog (would that Denver Stiffs was half as good) and I love you.

Time to give you sh*t.
You do realize that CSC has made a story for EVERY move the Saints have made, and two for Reggie’s trade in the past week? Dave has been involved with every story no matter who has posted it. If he messes up some grammar on this post, just know that it’s because he’s busy trying to write/monitor the amount of posts coming in AND managing his actual life.
I realize you’re trying to help him out since you say this is your favorite blog, and all I ask you is to look at the bigger picture.

all i’m trying to say is that this is an internet blog that is free. if you know what the person is trying to say, let it slide. we aren’t in school. my wife drives me nuts trying to correct my pronounciation of certain words. I’m a grown man; I’ll say a word how I like, and if I use the wrong word or mispell a word, no big deal, it’s not like anyone is giving me money for words.
his criticism was done in a respectful way and I apologize for overreacting with stick in butt comment. built up aggression from wife correcting me.

I can’t tell you all how much we are missing that hardcopy TP sports section!!! It’s really hard to transfer to the e version. this is going to be a very deep WR market. Teams are waiting/forcing the market to settle. There’s already rumblings from agents that teams are “colluding” on offers they are giving tier 2 players. In reality, the market is flooded and there’s only so much money to go around with twice the size of FA class and less cap space than most years.

I was just thinking off the top of my head
Since we heard that Bushrod loves it here, and we have another possible starting LT waiting in the wings with Charlie Brown; should Bushrod get beat out by Brown say next season, would moving Bushrod to RT be a sound idea? I know Stinchcomb still holds the position, but his health is beginning to decline, and I see him possibly being ok with the idea of being a backup.
"Just win baby!"
I actually like this
scenario very much. It would make sense to put a fresh youngster over on that side and if it is Bushrod, we keep continuity.

That’s not a bad alternative should push come to shove, but I wonder if Brown has a decent grasp on the playbook/schemes. Akin to the Steelers and their difficult defensive schemes, I heard that SP’s offensive schemes are difficult for rookies to grasp as well; and the lost offseason might impact the sophomore’s mental readiness for the job. I do love the money-saving aspect tho.

cap hit was going to be 16 million. trading him brought that number down to about 4. you’re off the hook for his 11.8 mil salary, but bonus money you’ve arleady given him that was prorated to count against the cap each year still counts. sometimes it accelerates the cap and counts and the remaining prorated amounts count all at once, depending on the date of trade or release.
Long story short, 4 million still counts against our cap for Reggie, no matter what route we took.

The cap works like the cap works. Teams can not “trade” cap space. Basically any signing bonus or the like is prorated over the remaining life of the contract, so this 4 million is on money that was paid as bonuses in previous years once he isn’t on the roster. There is no mechanism for cap relief from that, as in Miami agreeing to take that cap hit.

I was just surprised
especially since Stinchcomb was all-pro 2009, and was voted on John Madden’s All-Protector’s award 2010. I think concerns about our existing OL (Goodwin, Evans, Stinchcomb, Bushrod, Nicks, Strief and Johnson) are unfounded. It’s a very highly respected unit throughout the league. We need to run the ball better, and that will happen when we have running backs and tight ends that are healthy. If they aren’t healthy and we are playing guys that practice with the first unit only 3 days before they start, then the running game will struggle but I don’t expect that. The better the running game is and the better the screen passes are executed, the less sacks and ints we will give up. To me it’s that simple. When your running game is in turmoil due to repeated injuries week after week, – advantage defense.
If Pro is the opposite of Con, what is the opposite of Progress? Congress!
-Men's Restroom - House of Representatives, Washington, DC
Stincomb tore his quad and played with it, had surgery under the radar that wasn’t reported in offseason, we found out about it from brees ota’s in interview from I think Heath Evans. Also found out that Bushrod was in the same boat, but was rehabbing in Atlanta (only OL not with team for Brees OTA). It explains drop-off in run game and pass protection last year.
Will say we bash on players like Will Smith all year then look foolish when we find out “he played with sports hernia all year” and other things kept out public to prevent opponent exploitation.
I like Stinch, but maybe he could be a cap causualty if it came down to us needing the space? Lord knows we don’t exactly have blue chip calibur tackles and the difference amongst them can’t be that great.

I agree. To a point.
At some point, even the most skeptical of fans has to stop saying that our line is playing above their ability level and just admit that they are a decent bunch. But I am really worried about depth.
Have to say
that I’m developing an aversion to the “anit-homers” as much as the homers. Pessimism doesn’t equal realism, and no matter how you try to spin it, unfounded grumpiness doesn’t equal cold logic. Moderation is key.
it's the relentless negative view that is most wrong.
It’s one thing to point out someone’s rose colored bias, but the tunnel visioned so called “realist” is just as guilty of a strain of their own stubborn bias.

Butch , Saints besides signing Brees haven’t gone for the big time signing. They’ve done some trades(Vilma, Shockey) but they haven’t gone out and paid huge money for a FA.
And truly I don’t think they should as Colston, Bees, Nicks, and Porter will need to be paid in 2012
But less I’m thinking less market for Cullen Jenkins/other FAs means a lesser $ demanded contract from them?
"Just win baby!"
I’m wondering what porter can do this year?

as it should be. I think just as top picks get 100% guaranteed for being capped, I think the veteran salaries should be capped too. Instead of Peyton Manning making 25 million in one year, or Asomugha making 15 million, put cap on player salary— no player can make more than 10% of salary cap, but fully guarantee contract. This way they’ll agree to it, and it will raise what the other 80% of non superstars make. Win win for everyone, and if all players were to vote on that proposal and not just 32 team reps who are mostly high end, I think it would pass.

I read in final power point presentation of new cba covering changes and things players got/didnt get and owners wanted but didn’t get that the owners actually proposed this, but players executive committe voted it down. However that committe consists of big name guys. I firmly believe if you took a league wide vote with ALL players, they’d love the idea. It means a 7 year vet sees a bigger piece of the pie and all the revenue increase doesn’t go directly to big names.

"I've been big ever since I was little." - William "The Refrigerator" Perry
Salary cap increases are only good if all that space isn’t going to maybe 3 players on each team. It makes no sense that any one player can get over 1/4 of the cap space in his salary when there are 53 men on a roster. Putting a limit on that would make FA less of who can get biggest piece of pie and more of “what organization do I want to be part of, which is best fit”. Plus it would benefit practically every player not named Manning or Brady.

Since we lost Remi I don’t see why Amobi would be a bad pickup.
Also, I see us resigning Carl Nicks, Jonathan Goodwin, Roman Harper, Zach Strief, Marvin Mitchell, Anthony Hargrove and David Thomas
Amobi doesn’t play nose, isn’t built for it. Also, he sucks as a 3-technique. Would not be an upgrade in depth, but a liability. Stay away from him.

Bud light guy myself. Can’t stand commercials trying to get you to switch beers. Here in LA, most of us drink beer long before we’re able to buy it, and by 21 already have a solid preference. no commercial will make me switch between the domestic big boys. might urge me to try something uncommon, like a Dos Equis or something, but a commercial won’t have you switch from Bud Light to Coors light. Seems like they waste a lot of money. Beer commercials should be geared for pre teens who have no preference yet.

about a month or two ago, I saw a video someone posted on saintsreport of him working out. He looked extremely motivated and in shape. Its why I’ve been so high on him. That and the fact he passed up $2 million extra from Skins and another team to sign with the Saints for a chance to win. A decade of never having a winning season would give me motivational problems if I was on a team that looked like it would be staying dysfunctional. I think Rogers will have an enormous impact and am very pumped at the signing.

I hope he can keep that up for us. He has certainly excelled as a traditional back and that is what sp wanted from Reggie. So maybe that plan will work better now?

Have to disagree with this.
Don’t think the Saints ever really tried to use Reggie as a traditional back, and I don’t think that’s what they ever saw him as.

-Very tired (wonder why?)
-Can’t talk about Sproles yet as he isn’t officially signed.
-Wanted to keep Bush in NO, but understands his opportunities elsewhere
-On free agent frenzy, big difference in working on 6-7 deals at once compared to normally 1-2.
-Disappointed that Bush felt the need for change of scenery, but admires that he isn’t afraid to take risk.
-On bringing back Lance Moore, it was a no-brainer to re-sign him. Lots of admiration for Lance Moore on how he went from practice squad to Brees’ favorite WR.
-On if it was important to find someone similar to Bush after trading him: If we didn’t have Reggie, we’d still be good, productive, and score. Wasn’t critical to replace Bush, BUT when you have an opportunity to sign a talent (Sproles), you have to take it.
-Hard to react to first day of TC as you have undrafted college FAs lining up against guys like Will Smith, Shaun Rogers, etc.
-On how he’d sum up Reggie’s performance on the field since joining the Saints: Contributed to a team who was 3-13 before he came, and appeared in 2 out of 4 NFC championship games following.

I'm lovin' this 72-hour FA frenzy
But now the six hour lull in action is killing me! There are still a couple of gaping holes on the roster, and training camp is shorter than manager training videos at Starbucks. We need to sign Harper and Thomas immediately! And either kidnapp Vonta Leach, dig up the remains of Mike Allstot, or (gulp) resign Evans. I don’t care how many potentially awesome RB’s we have, we still need at least one capable lead blocker. and then there’s Carl Nicks… Somebody sign something and go to work!! Compressing all the man-friendly soap opera of the NFL offseason into part of a week is cool in a lot of ways, but it’s destroying my stomach lining.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Lombardi, the Cowboys are expected to set their sights on free agent DE Cullen Jenkins if they lose out in the bidding on Nnamdi Asomugha.
Multiple reports suggest the Cowboys are serious players in the Asomugha race, but our expectation is that he will ultimately sign with the Jets. Simply put, Asomugha wants to play in New York. Dallas already lost Stephen Bowen to a division rival, and Jason Hatcher is on the Broncos’ radar. They need defensive end help badly, and Jenkins is a rare play-making “five technique.”

Not good, since when did I ever think I’d want the Cowboys to sign a top-tier player? Make it work Jerry! (Still can’t believe i said that.)
"Just win baby!"
Nnamdi won't be as much as a threat to us as Jenkins would
their line always gives us problems shutting down one side of the field still wont stop us from being able to pass. Jenkins can if him and Ware and the rest of te line can get to drew…

OK, I’m working on nailing down the source, so take this with a grain of salt. The rumor is that New Orleans is the #1 option for Cullen Jenkins and the Saints will make an offer tonight. Intrestingly, the other teams that are bidding are the Packers and Browns, NOT the Cowboys.
Off the road, at work, will be back in forth over the next hour checking my computer till I get to the point I can sit down and focus on finding news.

NFL Network’s Albert Breer reports the Jets have dropped out of the sweepstakes for free agent Nnamdi Asomugha.
Just as this news was reported on NFL Network, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News passed along word that there is “fist-bumping” going on at Cowboys headquarters. It indeed appears as if Asomugha is going to Dallas. Stay tuned.
