Saints Sign FB Korey Hall, DE Curtis Johnson and G Dan Gay; Re-Sign Pierson Prioleau

The New Orleans Saints made a few of their earlier signings official today while adding a few more names to the roster.

The team added fullback Korey Hall from Green Bay, defensive end Curtis Johnson from St. Louis and guard Dan Gay, formerly of the NY Jets.

The signing of Hall, along with the other fullbacks already on the roster, makes me seriously think the Saints do not plan on bringing back Heath Evans

I guess the organization really didn't want to go too long without having a player with the surname 'Gay' on the roster after releasing Randall Gay earlier this week. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

The Saints also re-signed safety Pierson Prioleau. Can't say I'm surprised by this move, considering he and Gregg Williams don't go anywhere without each other.

More about each of the three new players can be found after the jump.

Star-divide

From the Saints official website:

The 6-0, 236-pound Hall was converted from linebacker to fullback upon joining the Green Bay Packers as a sixth-round draft pick in 2007 out of Boise State and has appeared in 48 games with 26 starts. He's recorded 21 receptions for 137 yards with one TD during his career, while serving as the blocking back for a Packers offensive attack that joined the Saints as the only two clubs to finish in the top 10 in offense for the past four seasons. Hall's also posted 52 career special teams tackles, including leading the Super Bowl XLV Champions with a career-best 15 stops on coverage units in 2010.

Johnson, 6-3, 254, was originally signed by Indianapolis as an undrafted free agent in 2008 out of Clark Atlanta and has appeared in ten games for the Colts and Dallas Cowboys and recorded five tackles (two solo), one sack and eight special teams stops. He spent most of the 2010 season on the St. Louis Rams practice squad, before being elevated to the active roster for the final two contests.

Gay, 6-5, 295, is a Lafayette native who prepped at St. Thomas More High School and started the final 34 games of his college career at Baylor at every position on the offensive line except for center from 2006-08. He was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the San Diego Chargers in 2009, spent the final month of the season on the New York Jets practice squad and went to their training camp in 2010.

remains to be seen if the FB will be any better than the aging Evans.

Well

Young guy, experienced with a high powered offense, converted over from a LB, Primary function is blocking, can catch out of the backfield if needed, and can help special teams. Seems like a younger version of Evans, except this guy can help special teams. I am all for it seeing as how our special teams weren’t so darn special last year.

but he already knows our system. If Hall is better, let him replace Evans. I just don’t know much about Hall, other than he was a former LB who was a 6th round pick in ’07.

I apologize for my ignorance on the subject, but why is getting another FA DE such an apparent high priority right now? Is this Jenkins guy just that good? It seems like we’re a hell of a lot better off at DE now than we were last season already, which we can’t say about a couple other positions.

It just seems like too low a priority for all the attention it’s getting here, when there are other glaring weaknesses in roster depth to address. What am I missing? For the record, I’m not all that familiar with Cullen Jenkins in the first place, so maybe he’s really awesome, and I don’t know it, but still, we got two potentially starting-caliber rookies added to nearly the exact same group we had last season. Seems like problem solved(on paper) to me.

We only have 10 RB’s and 12LB’s in camp and we are trying to get them all on an even keel. We only theed 2 more RB’s and 4 more DE’s and the NFL will give us a set of steak knives for the achievement.

I was hoping we could get a whole squad of these ex-college-basketball-center-turned-whatevers on the team. The kind of guys who just get told what position they’re playing on the Friday before a game. Would solve a lot of our depth issues.

Yes. He was an adequate placeholder last year. It was almost like Super Bowl champions Chuck “steak” Grant and Bobby McGee never left. I imagine that’ll do for four games.

So who’s going to start at SS? Darius Rucker, or whatever that UDFA rook currently starting there is named? Or are we promoting Prioleau?
And is John Kuhn’s backup the lead blocker for all our new RB toys? And who’s playing TE? Jimmy Graham and the practice squad guy that Brees really likes?
I’m just sayin’, I think there are higher priorities right this moment, and a high-profile, high-dollar FA to fill in for Will Smith in September seems heavy-handed to me. Is he actually catgorically much better than Smith?

I’m also assuming that Romeus will possibly develop well over time, giving us a future starter who’s already in the building, as they say. That is probably not a high likelihood, but everybody’s a gamble of one sort or another. I just think we’ve invested in the D-line quite a bit already, while 3 other spots look damn near empty.

I like Kuhn

rotoworld.com:

Free agent FB/RB John Kuhn told Scout.com’s Packer Report that he’d like to re-sign with Green Bay.
The Packers are deeper at running back than they have been in awhile, but they should still be able to find a spot for Kuhn. The 28-year-old is exceptional in pass protection and reliable in short-yardage situations. An ideal No. 4 back, Kuhn also had five special teams tackles in three late-season games. Jul 17, 10:40 PM

But as from today, well, I've got somebody that's new.

I am on the fence.

When it comes to Cullen Jenkins it seems he is better against the run and not to good when it comes a pass rush. I feel like we need to improve our pass rush. Maybe a rotation of Smith, Jordan, Jenkins, and any other DE that makes the final cut could work.

Eagles are very air tight, the signed Vick and everyone was like, “Huh?” Their Front office is Top 5

I will say while Vick is incredible to watch he has started 16 games ONCE and Vince Young while a very good backup option won’t win you anything when it matters.

by Malbrough on Jul 29, 2011 6:54 PM CDT reply actions

I like Young. He may be(or likely is) a primadonna, and he’s not an extraordinary talent at any one measurable QB skill. He’s a pretty average passer with a decent arm, and he’s a very McNabb-like runner:slow, but intuitive, and stays on his feet. But his one truly great skill is winning games that he probably shouldn’t. I don’t really know what happened between him and Fisher, and maybe the whole Titans team were happy to see him go, but I think there’s a team where he could be great out there. He needs to grow up some, it would appear, but his one real talent is the thing great QB’s need that they can’t teach: winning.

I kinda like this, but they need to work on his speed.

That’s one thing that won’t get better with age, or practice at his age.

He needs to get better about being in the right position, before he needs catch-up speed.

exactly. They over-reacted to keep a mediocre/good safety and made him top paid ever. AJ Smith is a real db

From what I heard, he's a level below Reed and Polamalu.

So that’s good-great safety. Still, it set the market and Harper took advantage. Now he better go earn every dollar.

I’d agree to play a FS with cover corner skills that much, but never a SS whose more of a “in the box” player best used in run support and blitzes.

but Roman is a SS. Roman got paid FS money. That was my point. I think Roman and Weddle are both a 7/10. Weddle has more covers skills, Harper more blitzing/tackling skills. But I don’t think Weddle has cover skills to raise the market that much. Congrats to Roman, but man, we trying to add other talent.

Concur

Harper is a solid SS with suspect cover skills. But, he’s a hard hitter. Now, I think in the future we just may see him doing Just For Men commercials with Emmit, et al. Dude, do something about that hair!

you wont get it

Cause Randall Gay won’t be on the field with us this year. This means that maybe, JUST MAYBE that pass would have been disrupted before it was caught.

Maybe….Yeah I wish he didn’t catch that one, but It was still a great tackle.

Hopefully we have more help out of the front 7 and QBs have less time..

We’ll have Prob on him when he lines up in the slot… which he was most likely doing there.

But he cuts a lot of slack when it comes to tackling. He doesn’t wrap guys up as well as i would like him to. I would prefer a wrapped up tackle for minimal gain to a crashing hit that lets a guy go for 10-20 yards or more.

Harper is actually ranked pretty well in the league. He needs some seed and to actually work on his tackling, but he only missed 8 tackles last year, not that I am saying it’s ok or anything, but he does pretty decent.

I never ever miss a Saints game. And from what I see from Harper, he belongs on this team. The man follows the football.

by tommy v on Jul 29, 2011 8:09 PM CDT reply actions

Only thing we see is Saints are intrested/pursuing Cullen Jenkins. We assume they want Dave Thomas back because it is a need, he’s great, they traded for him, he’s versatile, ect. Maybe when market settles or more top TE’s get signed we’ll know his price range. Saints are tight lipped, so maybe 10 minutes from now we hear he got re-signed. who knows.

As many different people that Drew throws to in a game, I think we keep three TE’s

by SaintsFanInIraq on Jul 29, 2011 8:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Thomas, Graham and Lorenzen.

They’ll probably keep 3 for in case of injury. But I’d keep these 3 no matter what.

by tommy v on Jul 29, 2011 8:18 PM CDT up reply actions

They’d be insane not to, with the amount of work our TE’s get. I only hope Lorenzen is as good as Brees thinks he could be. And, of course, they HAVE to resign Thomas.

I’m relieved and happy we got Harper back. Don’t know anything about the cap, other than its impossible to speculate. Drew wants to see Tyler do well because Tyler worked hard to become a TE (was a QB in college) and added like 30lbs of muscle this off-season. That’s a lot different than having confidence from realistic evidence you see on the tape a la Dave Thomas.

still got to do it in a game against live action. Dave Thomas already proved he can do that AND block AND catch AND play FB or variations of it. I’m not disagreeing; just saying whatever expectations Drew has for Tyler shouldn’t spell exit for Dave. We need 3 quality TE’s, and with Graham, we only have 1 very young and inexperienced one. DAve is a must keep.

supposedly we were at 105 before saving about 16 between Gay and Reggie departures, which would bring us down to 89. Seen the list for our guys next year? scary. Guess thats why Loomis gets paid.

Adam Sandler had some comedy CD’s. One, about 15 years ago, had a skit with a guy named Toll Booth Willy. the toll was $1.25. Everyone made fun of him as they paid the toll. Some girls showed intrest only to play a cruel joke, and he says:

I’m coming out of da boooothhhh. Im gonna f*** you and all your fish eating lesbian friends in front of your mothaas.

Then he gets hit by a car. was funny with the accent and all.
