Another day of free agency on steroids is in the books and while the roster moves are beginning to slow down, there is still a little work to be done. After all the moves made yesterday, the Saints have three more players than they did yesterday and have only five roster spots left open. The decisions are starting to get a little more difficult.
Currently, the Saints have 82 players under contract or agreed to terms.
They still have three rookies left to sign, but those are all but definite and are included on the final roster. There were no rookies signed yesterday but I would hope to see at least Martez Wilson sign today, if not either of the two first rounders (Jordan & Ingram).
That gives the Saints a total of 85 players on their official roster.
With a roster limit of 90, that leaves 5 open roster spots left to fill, either by re-signing one of their own free agents or bringing in a new free agent player; unless they make more cuts to create more room. Restricted free agent Carl Nicks is almost sure to take one of those open spots.
By far the biggest priority for the Saints is to re-sign tight end David Thomas. Other than Jimmy Graham, the Saints are a little thin at the position. Hopefully that's next on the list for Mickey Loomis and company.
Other players remaining on the Saints unrestricted free agent list that I'd like to see them sign and might be considered a priority are Zach Strief, Anthony Hargrove and Jonathan Goodwin.
With the signing of fullback Korey Hall yesterday and three total FBs currently on the roster all fighting for one spot, things are not looking good for Heath Evans. At first glance, it's looking like the team may not be bringing him back.
Questions surround the future of Darren Sharper, Jeff Charleston and Marvin Mitchell as well. It's tough to tell whether they plan to re-sign these three players. The situation appears worse for Mitchell since there are already plenty of linebackers on the roster.
I would be alright with letting the remaining Saints free agents take a walk.
Below you'll find a roster breakdown by position. Then you'll be treated to a complete, up-to-date roster (as of the publishing of this post) and full sortable Saints roster. It includes the three remaining not-yet-but-soon-to-be-signed 2011 draft picks. That's followed by a list of the Saints remaining unsigned free agents, also in an easy to use, sortable table. But first, a quick recap of yesterday's action
