Saints Training Camp: Day Three Recap
It may be Sunday, but the Saints still did some work today! Martez Wilson stepped onto the field for the first time today, and stuck around to talk about it afterward. Jabari Greer and Marques Colston were up against each other in practice, and both had some comments about working with each other. Finally, it seems Malcolm Jenkins not only gave a welcome to Mark Ingram, but picked off Drew Brees for the 2nd day in a row. Don't know if that's good for Malcolm or bad for Drew.
So continue reading to find out what happened in training camp today!

New Orleans Saints DE Will Smith likely to face suspension: Payton | NOLA.com
Saints Coach Sean Payton said Sunday he believes defensive end Will Smith will finally have to serve a four-game suspension at the beginning of the 2011 season. Smith has declined comment on the matter. The suspension stems from a 2008 test that caught Smith and a handful of other players using a banned substance. The substance was ingested by...
New Orleans Saints S Malcolm Jenkins welcomes RB Mark Ingram to NFL | NOLA.com
It was the first day of practice for New Orleans Saints running back Mark Ingram, the former Heisman Trophy winning running back from Alabama whom the Saints took with their second pick in the first round of the 2011 draft. Ingram got a somewhat rude welcome. On his first carry, a sort of off-tackle run left, Ingram went through...

TRANSCRIPTS:
Opening Statement:
"We signed linebacker Martez Wilson. He practiced today. We signed wide receiver Courtney Roby and agreed to terms with cornerback Fabian Washington from the Baltimore Ravens. The following players still remain on the failed physical list: T Charles Brown, RB Chris Ivory, CB Tracy Porter, DE Greg Romeus, and G Carl Johnson. The following players did not practice today: CB Josh Gatlin with a right thumb injury, LB Jerimiha Hunter with a right achilles, and WR Michael Galatas had some hamstring issues at practice."
How has Matt Tennant handled the center position with Jonathan Goodwin not being here?
"I think in his second year that transition has gone real well. These reps are important for him. He’s a player that is going to be getting as many reps as possible, and he’s handled it well."
Is it set that Will Smith is going to miss those first four games of the regular season?
"From the impression I have, that is what’s going to happen. I think you just have to make sure you’re rolling guys through (that position) and get Will the reps he needs, but also make sure we’re prepared if that does happen."
Can you talk about Fabian Washington?
"We’re allowed to have 90 players here, and you want to have as many players here that can compete. Tracy Porter’s nicked up right now and the season is going to be quicker upon us than it normally is. So, it’s being smart when you look at all of our numbers. He’s another player that we evaluated when he left Oakland and went to Baltimore. He was one that, as we started this camp, we felt necessary to bring in another veteran corner."
Does it excite you how far Malcolm Jenkins has come or is it too early to determine?
"Absolutely. He’s a smart player. The decisions he makes on the field are generally the right one. He’s in great shape, which is very important to him. He’s really become an outstanding player and it’s happening right in front of our eyes. We saw signs of it in his rookie season, and we certainly saw it in his contributions last year."
What were the drinks that were brought out to the players?
"Those were Shirley Temples. That was one of the provisions in the new CBA that players weren’t practicing, so we brought them Shirley Temples. I wanted to make sure we were abiding by all the rules."
Has it been a big adjustment with having to learn on the fly without a lot of your veteran players here?
"It’s not that we don’t have a lot of veteran players here. It’s that we’re missing 25 percent of our team, and I think every team is dealing with those same issues so you just have to be flexible with your practice schedule and adjust to it. I think Monday or Tuesday we might adjust a little bit with a time change."
We’ve seen a little bit of sloppiness and also some good plays. Is that what you expect to see in training camp and the preseason games?
"I think it’s safe to say that’s what you see early in most training camps to begin with. The question is - are we going to see more of it, and I can’t answer that yet. We have to pay attention to the weight room and the conditioning level of our team, and we have to do a good job with our installations and not be in such a hurry."
What was the reason for not going in full pads in today’s practice?
"It was similar to full pads. We went with helmets and shoulder pads. I think more than anything else there’s the progression of getting them used to carrying this gear, which we have time to do that."
What’s your impression of Charles Brown?
"I think it’s not going to be a long-term issue with his hamstring injury. You want these young guys to be getting as many snaps as they can, but not at the expense of any setback. I’ll be excited to see him back on the field. We’ve seen him enough in his rookie year, and obviously he still has a lot of work to do but he’s athletic and he’s smart. We’re anxious to see his progression. Just like we were with Matt Tennant, we’re anxious to see his progress from year one to year two.
Do you think he can be a quality starter in the NFL?
"That’s why we drafted him in that round. We feel like he has that type of potential and ability. The challenge now is to get him to that spot, or even better that a quality starter."
What were your impressions with Mark Ingram today?
"With the rotation of all those players, we were trying to bring him up to speed and getting him the snaps he needs. Normally, all of these guys would have had a rookie minicamp and OTAs, and in this case Mark hasn’t had a chance to do that. I thought he did a really good job with the reps he had today and we’ll continue to build on that."
Is there anything new with the unsigned players who you’re targeting?
"We’re still in that period where Mickey Loomis, Khai Harley, Ryan Pace and those guys are still on the phone and working 24/7. We’ll continue to work on these guys and get to our total number."
Is the continuity you’ve talked about with the offensive line something you’re most concerned with?
"I think it’s important for any team. Certainly, we value that."
What are your expectations for Shaun Rogers?
"We think that he can be a big factor for us on defense. He’s explosive. He’s a guy that can not only run well, but also affect the passer with his size inside. I think he’s in pretty decent shape considering we haven’t had any formal workouts throughout the course of the offseason. He’s one of those players that is quickly getting acclimated to our system and is handling the heat pretty well."

Great work Jon.
I was hoping the NFL would just say **** it and let Star Caps guys play. Haven’t they gone through enough legal this off-season. But it’s being widely tweeted that the Saints (and Vikings) believe they won’t have their starters for first 4 weeks.

we need a premium pickup
we need to sign someone who makes headlines because he is an outstanding player-like an Asomugha or a Burress, or a Dahl or Haynesworth. Not many top-level FA’s left, though.
Some of the signings we’ve had of late seem very mediocre. We need another pass rusher or LB.

C'mon Phil, you know yourself that The Saints always make good headlines. We don't need anyone else that the media calls superstars. We have our own superstars and if they're not superstars, they will be, just by being on this New Orleans Saints team.
My main concern is worrying who to keep or who to let go out of all of these good players. As usual, we will have to let a bunch of good players go. Believe what I’m telling you, those other teams are just trying to get close to matching our team by paying for all of these so called superstars. The Saints get these players from no matter where and make them superstars. That’s another reason why 90% of NFL players would love to play for the Saints.
Haynesworth, are you serious?
The last thing the Saints need is a player like Haynesworth. The Saints finished last season with the 7th best defense in the league, according to nfl.com for points allowed. Haynesworth is a disease in the locker room, who always seems to have a bad attitude. Greg Williams said that he thinks this is the best locker room he has ever been around, and Williams has always been a coach who is brutally honest to not only himself, but also the media.

Getting Haynesworth is like commiting your team to losing the division if not worse. I'm glad we have more skill than that.
it will be interesting to see that storyline play out over the season. belichick will either be a genius for picking him up & turning Hayensworth into an asset, or it will be an epic fail. i’m leaning to the first option.

Well I believe that if anyone can keep Haynesworth in chek it’s Bill Belichick. Hasslett and Haynesworth were not a good fit. I hate the Patriots as much as anyone else, but the respect that Belichick commands, deservedly so, is awesome.

5 sacks last year, but only 33 tackles. 16 solo, 17 assisted. Also forced three fumbles. Could be GW’s type of guy. 6-2, 278lbs.

Poor guy....
He must think he died and went to heaven. Four years with the Chiefs and the Lions, and now he gets to be with a real team!
here's the Pride of Detroit story on the loss
McBride joined the Lions in 2009, following defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham to Detroit from Kansas City. In his first year in Detroit he had 27 tackles, 1.5 sacks and one forced fumble in 11 games. Last year he did even better, recording 33 tackles, five sacks and three forced fumbles in 15 games.
I was hoping the Lions would bring McBride back. While he wasn’t a starter, he is talented and a great fit in the Lions’ defense. Having a solid rotation of defensive ends was very nice last season, and I was looking forward to seeing a rotation of a healthy Kyle Vanden Bosch, Lawrence Jackson, Avril and McBride this year.
Thumbs up, everybody...
For rock and roll!!!!
Some of the commenters on Pride of Detroit,,
also feel he is better against the run than Avril, Lawrence Jackson, or Willie Young.

Typical Loomis. Bargain bin low risk medium reward— the kind of guys that make up the back half of a roster. It’s not the best 22 that wins in January, it’s the best 53.

Excellent.
Canal Street Chronicles-A place of great Saints news and information. Oh and the stuff I write!
"I rejected those answers. Instead, I chose something different. I chose the impossible. I chose...Rapture!"
Moves left to be made:
I’d like to see the Saints add to the D-line, LB, and TE group.
Guys I like:
Andre Carter— sign him to 1 year deal, cut Alex Brown, and now you’ve got a 4-3 end to help while Cam learns and Will’s out, to go along with rotational depth of Turk.
Aubrayo Franklin— want a younger NT who knows what he’s doing and is durable? When you need to go big, you can put him at Nose, move Rogers to 3 tech, and put Sedrick where Will Smith goes for a month; or you can just have a great rotation at DT.
Lofa Tatupu — upgrade over anyone not named Vilma. Had surgery on each knee last year, maybe our pay cut doesn’t hurt as much as Seattle’s.
Rocky McIntosh— familiar with Gregg Williams, Saints went after him last year with trade proposal, would be a solid under the radar move, and an upgrade.
Zach Miller— make a splash— he’s worth every penny. One of the most COMPLETE TE’s in the game. No need to hold Graham back— put them on the field at once, and you create match-up connundrums and become equally effective and less predictable with the ability to run and throw out of that formation.
Cut Alex Brown and Devery Henderson for room to make some of these moves.

i like your ideas...
any rationale to cut Wil Smith? he’ll be out for 4 games anyway, he’s getting older, he’s expensive, and he really hasn’t been that productive. I know it might be a gamble, but some of the players on the roster already and some from your list might be able to be just as productive as Smith and it would make the lineup a little easier to manage and be consistent instead of having one strategy for the first 4 games and then gradually trying to get Smith up to speed and then who knows what?

I'm happy wth Shanle and Casillas.
Reggie may not have had it Ingram, but Sproles will be just Ivory.
I wasn't saying we should get Haynesworth
first of all, I am well aware he just signed. My point is we are signing players that just don’t seem on the level of premium players- players lie Vilma, Brees, Colston, etc. No one would dispute that a guy like Haynesworth has immense talent. Of course anyone we sign I would want to NOY have any attitude problems. I want to see a signing of someone who would appear to be an IMMEDIATE UPGRADE – like a Cullen Jenkins or a Ray Edwards. The guys we have signed seem like they are more in the middle tier – especially when it comes to pass rush. I want someone who is a better pass rusher than Wil Smith, not worse. We need 1 dominant pass rusher. Do we really have one? We have some decent talent and some young guys that have potential. But, I was just looking for an immediate play-maker.
If Pro is the opposite of Con, what is the opposite of Progress? Congress!
-Men's Restroom - House of Representatives, Washington, DC
I understand what you're saying Phil.
I don’t know how immediate it will be, but if anybody can make these players produce and get better, it’s the Saints. I think we’re looking pretty good, we just need to wait and see now who makes the team. Boy, that’s gonna be a whole bunch of cuts to lower down to 53. It’s kind of scary thinking about who they may cut.
