Saints Waive Linebacker Danny Clark, Sign Tackle Jordan Black
Earlier today the Saints announced that they have parted ways with veteran outside linebacker Danny Clark. Clark was brought in last year to help with defensive run support.
To take his place, the team has signed veteran offensive tackle Jordan Black, most recently of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The Times-Pic has the entire story on the roster moves.
I will miss Mr. Clark. He was a nice guy who played surprisingly well during his short stint here in New Orleans. You can read part one and part two of my interview with him last year.

And people say John Clayton never gets anything right.
Odd that we would cut Danny Clark instead of one of the completely no name UDFA’s at his position instead.

You don’t have to pay him either when you cut him at 53 man roster time. However to cut him before any roster cuts were needed (other than to get to the max for signing black) was a bit of an oddity.
"Winter is coming"
maybe there’s a hidden strategy, based on some rules that we don’t know about.
if you cut him now, and wait x days (while other teams are full and likely won’t sign him) we can pick him back up without penalty.
or, they knew he didn’t make the cut and decided to go after some line depth that many CSC’s have been crying for.

the only penalty for cutting him would be to do so after week 1. He has no guaranteed money, but as a vested veteran (veterans with 4 or more years of service) if he makes the opening day week 1 roster, his entire base salary is guaranteed for the year.
So what you would see in this case is a team cutting a veteran right before the regular season begins, then sign him back the Tuesday after week 1 is completed. In this way, the team only owes him each week he’s on the team.
Cutting him now only means that 1- he has lost a step and 2- so much so that they feel what is on the roster is better and 3- they are allowing him time to catch on with another team because 4- they like him enough to give him the courtosey when they could have just held on to him in the event injuries occured before the season began, even though in all likelihood they were going to cut him anyway.

This is a good sign
Shows we’ve improved at OLB and maybe Martez ready to rotate with a healthy Casillas and Ingram (the other Ingram – btw, is Ingram a really common name?)
Good sign for OLB, bad sign for OT.

Rotoworld.com agrees:
We wonder if his addition may indicate that RT Jon Stinchcomb (knee surgery) has suffered a setback. Stinchcomb isn’t practicing this week.

I liked Danny Clark especially vs the run
thought he did a good job. hope they are right on this

Danny (even when we had him a few years back) has always been good against the run as well as in the redzone (shortened space). He has always been a liability against the pass and in space, though I do remember a preseason game he picked of Chase? when he was on the Texans. He’s pretty much played SAM because his size and run support and because that is the position the Saints normally sub out when in Nickle. Apparantly Herring and Wilson are better candidates for SAM.

2 rookie LBs that need a lot of preseason looks..
could be the reason.. can’t cut rookies (even free agents) that easily, this year.. no mini-camp, no OTAs.. clark serves a purpose in short yardage.. they could still bring him back later..
I liked Clark...
Clark was really aggressive and played the run well. With Stinchcomb physically iffy, not to mention his ability to get flagged alot for false starts and holding, I think Its still very early in the season and getting a capable OT who has time to learn the system and open lanes for RBs & protect Brees is king. I’m assuming most who comment don’t see them practice and the other “younger” LBs are probably really coming along. I guess in some positions, talent outplays experience.
Clark’s nickname is Sparky. Beverly DeAngelo used to say it real sexy like.

No problem with this move, btw. While depth at both positions suck, dependable play at OT is far more important to the overall success of the team. Clark may very well be the best OLB of the Sean Payton era, but that’s like naming a Best Screenplay amongst Three Stooges films.
