Fingertips my ass! The long pass that Meachem dropped was nobody's fault but his own. The ball was perfectly thrown, right where it needed to be. In fact, I don't know if it gets any better than that.

Yeah I saw it the same way
Wish that picture was a little clearer, but you can still clearly see it was in his hands and not the finger tips. If I remember correctly it looked like he made the classic mistake of looking away before securing the catch.

Thank you Dave!
Right in his hands! Drew Brees never misses those! 99.91./2% he’s on the money with those throws.
That's interesting. You know what makes me sad? YOU DO!!! Maybe we should chug on over to mambypandyland...or maybe we can find some self confidence for you YA JACKWAGON!!!!!!
(tears) Tissue?.....Crybaby.
That pass was right on the money
You can’t throw it any better than that. Meachem should have caught it, no doubt about it
Peyton, I can eat Oreos faster than you!!!!
“You can’t throw it any better than that. "
He was almost on his knees!
Of course, it could have been thrown better than that.
Hit him in stride…. better chance to actually catch it, and WAY better chance to actually score.

Meachem lost his footing on the turf monster
The pass was on the money, Meachem stumbled, the ball still hit him in the hands, and he dropped it
Peyton, I can eat Oreos faster than you!!!!
Definitely on Meachem
Perfect pass. Looked like Meachem fell over his own feet. Perhaps the newly installed turf was to blame. Had Meachem caught the ball in stride there’s no doubt that that would have been six.
Child, please. A perfect pass would be on the numbers. His arms were completely extended at the intitial point of contact. Yes, he should have caught it, but part of the blame lies in a less-than-perfectly placed ball. And it sure as hell isn’t going through his ARMS.

Back it up a few frames. The photos above are Meachem’s attempt at bringing in the deflection AFTER it hit his fingertips.

This is absolutely false. The images you are seeing are his first and only attempt at catching the ball. The ball was never deflected. YOU back it up a few frames and proof me wrong.

Yeah, by a SF defender. I thought Meachem had slowed down the trajectory of the ball, then took another stab at it as it fell. That’s what I was referring to as a tip. More like a bobble, which still probably happened, just not as I envisioned it from above.
"I was not on the boat in question" -Darren Sharper
Ok, it wasn’t as overthrown as it appeared from the terrace. It’s still not on the numbers, as he’s having to extend.
"I was not on the boat in question" -Darren Sharper
His elbows are bent...
He’s BARELY extending.
He’s also leaning forward, which is part of the extension. It’s all compensation for a slight overthrow. A perfect pass would be over his shoulder, against his chest. The receiver would have no reason to stretch, lean or crouch.
"I was not on the boat in question" -Darren Sharper
More nitpicking for the sake of argument
It was an excellent NFL pass, very catchable. Significantly worse passes than this have been caught by Saints receivers. This was a good pass by Drew.
He’s leaning because he was falling….wish we had a wide angle replay and some humility.

"Over his shoulder . . .
. . . and against his chest. "
Yeah, it’s definitely Brees’ fault; he’s so old that he can no longer throw his patented “Boomerang Pass.”
He’s thrown that type of pass countless times. This one is clearly off the mark. Meachem made a fine attempt to lunge low enough and forward enough to snare the errant throw. He just didn’t manage to bring it in. It’s on both he and Brees.
You can toga party, but you can't toga fish.
I disagree completely
As a receiver, albeit not a professional one, I do not prefer to catch the ball over my shoulder and against my chest.
Generally, in order to shield defenders, a receiver will slow up to extend their arms away from their body and catch the ball outstretched as opposed to tight to the body where a defender has more of an ability to make a play on the ball.
Furthermore, receivers (Good receivers) all use their hands for catching as opposed to their bodies and try to keep the ball away from the pads, which disrupt many a catch attempt.

i am interested CP – I think you are in agreement on the “long-slow decline” theory espoused by stujo (please correct me if i am wrong). Which QBs in the league would you think would consistently throw that ball better than Drew in 2011?
The two aren’t mutually exclusive. You can be in decline and still be better than everyone else in a certain statistical category.

Yall are talking about 2 different plays.
CP is talking about the Chase Daniel pass down the sideline to Meachem that looked tipped.
Dave is talking about the post route pass from Brees that should have been caught.
And i do think it was a perfect pass, the defender had no shot to deflect it and it hit Meachem in the hands, thats what he gets paid to do.
Although CP knows everything so no point in argueing
by touchdown my pants on Aug 16, 2011 10:37 AM CDT up reply actions
the defender had no shot to deflect it
Exactly why it was an ideal pass. Had the ball been thrown “between the numbers”, the defender nearest Meachem could have deflected it.
false
meachem had pretty decent seperation. when i saw the play it looked more like and underthrow. looked like meachem had to slow a bit and it was somewhat to his right. I can assure you that Drew would want another chance at that throw if given one even if he made the catch. Now could Meachem catch the ball that was thrown? yes. the defender had no shot to deflect it doesn’t seem true to me. CB didn’t turn his head around till it was too late imo. If he turns earlier that ball is deflected or possibly intercepted. Good throw? yes. great throw? no. horrible drop by meachem? heck yeah.
Now that we have a 2011 season let's win the Superbowl!
by skinnykinney on Aug 16, 2011 12:01 PM CDT up reply actions
We’re not talking about two different plays. Meachem wasn’t even running in stride on the one from Daniel. He had to wait on the ball. This one was a slight overthrow. It should have been caught. No doubt about that. Had the Daniel pass not been tipped by a defender and hit Meachem in the hands, then that would be an UNDERTHROW that should have been caught. In either case, it doesn’t excuse the off-targetness of the pass. I’d say this one is 90% Meachem, 10% Brees on the throw.
"I was not on the boat in question" -Darren Sharper
No it wasn't a perfect pass.
He actually had to catch up with it. He should have had it but he tried to head for the G-line before he had secured the catch.

OMG...
am I actually could to agree with CP? (at least partially)
You’re 100% right… it was NOT in the slighted a perfect pass.
Besides his arms being fully extended, he was almost on his knees.
Because of Meach’s speed and skill he came close to catching it. But that was certainly not a “gimme”.
-
Of course, if we want to be technical, it went through more than his fingertips… the palm, the wrist, and part of his foreARM were involved – according to the pics.

He dropped two passes. One from Brees, one from Daniel. Brees has dropped many, many passes over a receiver’s shoulder on the numbers. The mere fact that he’s extending his arms PROVES that it wasn’t a “perfect” throw. It doesn’t PROOF it, however.
"I was not on the boat in question" -Darren Sharper
The one from Daniel may have been deflected by the defender. He had to wait for it and it was also double coverage. Daniel was lucky it wasn’t intercepted. The throw by Brees was definitely better, but it still wasn’t textbook. Some of the blame for the drop lies in that fact.
"I was not on the boat in question" -Darren Sharper
this debate over whether it was "perfect" or not is pretty pointless
Pretty sure Drew knows by now where the pass needs to be for Meach or any other of his receivers to catch it.
The pass was definitely good enough to be caught by an NFL veteran receiver, by a wideout on your favorite college team playing its most hated rival, or by a split end playing in his high school homecoming game.
In fact, if my seven-year-old were playing Pee Wee football and didn’t catch a pass thrown like that from his QB, he might be running laps.

Meachem had a step on the defender. Had Brees dropped it over his shoulder into his breadbasket, the defender would have still had no shot at intercepting it. See the Henderson TD against Detroit in the 2009 opener. THAT was a perfectly thrown pass.

How can a quarterback, who is throwing paralell to the football field to a reciever who is running a post route, hit the reciever between the numbers while the reciever is running at the that angle?
answer: it is impossible due to the angle the quarterback is throwing the ball at and the point to where by the reciever catches the ball.
The only true way to hit a reciever between the numbers is a stop and go route, or where
the reciever turns their body back towards the quarterback.

A lot of the “greatest passes of all time” were hardly thrown in the ole’ breadbasket which mr. cp and probably others in this forum would agree qualifies as at least great placement of said rock = pigskin. Sometimes they can be BOTH… a great catch and a grat pass.
Example: Ben Rothelsomething to Santonio Holmes to win the Super Bowl… GREAT catch and GREAT through – both were AMAZING.
But, sometimes they can be a great throw, through traffic or in between defenders, but the catch is routine because the throw was right on the money.
And, sometimes it can be a great catch BECAUSE the throw was so bad, too high, too low, tipped at the line, near a defender when it could have been placed away from the defender but still catchable.
In the case of the Meachem play, it would have been a very good catch BECAUSE the ball was not thrown were it was easily catchable, EVEN THOUGH it could have been.

Old timers rule
If it touches your fingertips, it should be caught. Meach should have caught the ball.
That's not the play that should worry us
I agree that Meachem should have caught it and perhaps Drew could have thrown it a little bit better….but all in all it’s a catchable pass. The play that worries me much more is the “almost” interception that Drew threw a few plays before this one. If the 49er guy wouldn’t have dropped it, then it would have been an interception. Drew ended his stats with 1 completion / 4 attempts. Pretty sad. But if it had been intercepted….much much worse.

A great pass doesn't go to the numbers
it goes to the hands. NFL players- in fact HS players and college players, are taught (if they are taught properly) to catch the ball with their hands and then bring it in. If you watch Jerry Rice or Larry Fitzgerald, that’s what they do. Every receiver has to catch the ball with his body occasionally, and some mediocre ones do it often. But it is not good football technique. Good football technique is catching with the hands and bringing it into the body immediately.

A good pass goes to the hands.
A great pass goes to the hands while the receiver is in stride, and does not have to bend down, dive, or dramatically slow down his route – including diving to get the ball.
If you have to dive or go to the ground to get a ball and it touches your hands, it’s NOT a “great throw” just because it touched his hands. The WR had something to do with that.
If it was thrown low ON PURPOSE to avoid a defender and it’s caught, then it’s a good throw and a great catch.

if it's thrown low on purpose to avoid a defender, and it's completed, it's a freakin GREAT pass...
where I come from that’s called threading the needle. Also, if a QB throws a pass, there are several seconds between when he releases it and when it reaches its destination. A QB has no control over the route (poor or high quality) that the receiver runs during that time and whether the receiver is running top speed or loafing or whether the receiver does any of a number of things that can affect whether the ball goes to his fingers or chest or anywhere else. So, it’s not really that simple- there are many variables. And to evaluate a QB’s throw by whether it goes to his outstretched hands or having to dive etc- is oversimplifying.

It was an "almost" perfect pass
I guess he could have stuck the ball through his face mask!!
The ball was thrown in the perfect spot! Brees was throwing him open. Safety on top and corner on his heels. A “perfectly” thrown ball(according to CP) would have allowed the safety(or both, since their was a route run under neath this route to occupy the other safety) to 1) knock the ball away or 2) Knock Meachem out. Brees threw him a ball that lead him between the two safeties, allowing him, if he catches the dang ball, to split the safeties, turn up field and score! Which is why he was peeved.
Does CP ever say anything positive? I have been reading his" opinions" for several years. I usually just laugh. Seems to me like he needs his own anti-everything blog.

He's Not Lynn Swann, You Know?

I don’t know how he can be expected to catch such a poorly placed pass.
I just sure hope Payton is giving Canfield a legitimate shot at the starting job, that’s all I can say.
Again, see the picture up top. He’s lunging forward and practically on his knees. If it wasn’t for Meachem’s effort to reposition himself, it’s a lousy pass. That said, he definitely should have caught it.

(I sincerely can’t believe that I’m agreeing with CP, but…)
a. He should have caught it.
He should have caught it.c. He should have caught it. (no one is denying that)
d. It was NOT even close to a perfectly thrown pass because Meachem had contort his body and leave his feet (or twist into a position where he fell) and because of his athletic ability he was able to come close to catching the ball.
e. But, he really should have caught it.

"It’s a lousy pass."
So it somehow goes from being a “slight overthrow” and “10% Brees’” fault to being a “lousy pass?”
You’re as inconsistent as you are pathologically contrarian.

If it wasn’t for Meachem’s effort to reposition himself, it’s a lousy pass.
Learn to read. Meachem’s effort was there. It’s primarily his fault for dropping the pass with that effort taken into account. Without taking that effort into account, his blame percentage would be much, much lower, as the ball wouldn’t have been even close to being on target. As is, 90/10 Meachem. No dive and stretch, probably more like 60/40 Brees. It would no longer have been a slight overthrow. There have been countless errant passes that Saints receivers haven’t made this much of an effort to get to.
You can toga party, but you can't toga fish.
I like how you capitalized “it’s” on your own, btw.
Starting a quote where you want it to start isn't being intentionally misleading.
You can toga party, but you can't toga fish.
So . . .
. . . a “slight overthrow” becomes not even “close to being on target” and if Meachem had simply made no effort at all, he would have been blameless!
Interesting figuring.
how's he supposed to even SEE the ball with the light-glare on his visor like that?
Thumbs up, everybody...
