This year, starting Preseason Week 3, I will be watching every preseason game and scouting players that we could pick up, who would fit nicely in our system. As a precursor to that, I got to see two 3rd string quarterbacks play out the ending of the St. Louis/Tennessee game. One of those two caught my eye, especially after his solid outing last week. Make the jump to find out who and why.
Thaddeus Lewis3rd-string Quarterback for the St. Louis Rams, Lewis is fighting AJ Feely for the chance to be Sam Bradford's immediate backup. Week 1 of the preseason, he was 3 for 5 for 28 yards, with no touchdowns and no interceptions, against the Colts. Not having had a chance to watch that game, all I can go on were the highlights of his 3 completions. The kid seemed to have good pocket presence, as well as being able to quickly find an open receiver. This week, against the Titans, Lewis went 8 for 10 for 74 yards, no touchdowns or interceptions again. He also led the Rams to a victory, marching the offense down the field for a 42 yard field game-winning goal at the end of the game. He was poised in the pocket, and the two incompletions he had were drops, not bad throws.
Yes, I do understand that this is against other third-stringers, but the kid looked good. He has solid mechanics, and is able to see the field well. He was sacked once in the Tennessee game, but outside of that he was able to feel the rush well, and step up when he needed to. I would like to see how he could do with solid receivers, and a better offensive line. If he were to come to New Orleans(unfortunately, there is nothing to say that he will), I think he would have a good chance to unseat Chase as our number 2 guy.
That's it for this week. I'll be back next week with more players, positions and teams.
