An Updated Prediction of the Saints 53-Man Roster

With another preseason game under their belt and slightly more game film from which to base my decisions, I've revamped my 53-man roster prediction from last week.

On defense, surprisingly, I've made no changes other than adding Nate Bussey. Everything else remains the same as it was last week.

I've made a few adjustments on the offensive side of the ball however. To make room for Bussey I eliminated guard Brian de la Puente. At offensive tackle I have removed Jon Stinchcomb and moved up Jordan Black. At tight end I got rid of Tyler Lorenzen and added Joe Morgan at wide receiver. Finally, at fullback, I simply switched out Korey Hall for Jed Collins.

Really the toughest decision was with Mitch King. I've love to include him but I just don't know who I would get rid of. Making room for Bussey by eliminating de la Puente was difficult enough.

I only put five players on the practice squad so there is some room there.

Make the jump to check out my entire 53-man roster. Then discuss!

Been reading lately that Will Smith will be available week 1

The Starcaps case is still being disputed between the NFLPA and league. Minnesota reporters are saying it won’t be resolved by week 1 and Smith and Williams will be able to play. Nothing definite yet, but reason to be optimistic that our best pass rusher will be able to get after Aaron Rogers.

IMO

We need another CB, and MJ doesn’t count.

Good list

Just a few questions/comments

1. Has Charles Brown shown anyone anything yet to justify his being on the roster?

2. Saints will make an effort to upgrade safety at league-wide cut time, and either Prioleau or Reis will be gone.

3. Saints LBs, as a group, are inferior to most teams in the SEC LB group when it comes to athleticism.

4. I would replace Tom Johnson with Mr. King.

5. Saints should cut ties with Canfield and look for another young QB for practice squad.

Ineligible for PUP list

The PUP list is for players who were not able to pass their physical to actually enter the training camp roster. Morgan is ineligible for this list now. He must either make the 53 man roster or be waived and added to the practice squad. I do not think based upon his performance that he would not be claimed on waivers by another team.

Two fullbacks

A couple of beat writers floated the idea as it looks the team is high on bothe the guys. Not sure I am buying into it – but that could mean only 3 TE’s

Funny that nobody wants poor old Lorenzen..:)

Humphrey blows as a blocker. I would think Lorenzen has the edge now, especially considering he could be the emergency QB. Of course, so could Bussey.

Is Bell the odd man out

When Ivory comes back off the PUP? Also, 7 LBs sounds like a lot. Bussey seems to be making a name for himself both in camp and in the games so he would be a tough cut. I know we signed Herring this offseason, but he looked like garbage last week vs. Houston. Not sure of the terms of his contract, but maybe he might not make the cut. Will have to see more from him this week

And

Who would we cut to make room for Smith if he starts the season on the suspended list? Junior? Charleston? I’ve been thinking that Devery wouldn’t make the roster this year, but looking at it, we have a lot of young, inexperienced guys behind him. Roby isn’t likely to be out there with the offense. Joe Morgan and Montez Billings each have a lot of potential, but are these guys ready to be thrown in there with the offense in the regular season?

by mknkachow on Aug 26, 2011 12:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Devery will make the roster IMO

I think Colston will be nicked more often than not… Lance now got the groin (sports hernia?) strain…. Morgan will miss the next two/three weeks… not exactly a picture of health

Is it just my bad math?

I count 54 guys on this 53 man roster. I see King making it over Johnson. Also I see the Saints keeping 2 fullbacks and releasing Bell or a safety as none of the backups have been anywhere near impressive and where is Fabian Washington. The guy is fast as lightning, but may be in the Witness protection program. What up with that?

Offensive Guards?

Can any of the 4 O Tackles play guard? If not, wouldn’t it be prudent to keep one extra guard on the roster?

Slight revision

I disagree about Johnson being signed to the active roster, at least initially…I think having DEs who can also serve as DTs gives us enough flexibility that we can start with only Ellis, Franklin and Rogers at DT which will allow us to sign a couple more potential gems in the mix, like Morgan and Bell.

I’m really curious about Allen, who’s listed as a G/T-if he has good upside I can see him being a real asset for depth…

As someone else mentioned, I too am inrigued by the 3 TE 2FB scenario-Graham, Thomas, Humphrey, Hall and Collins…but I’m not going there-yet…

I think Brown’s versatility will win hiim-out over Charleston but I think he’ll only be on until Smith gets back. Who knows what then…

Butler and Roberson are both promising-Butler, a former DT, could be a helluva SLB who could even play some FB as was done with Hall. He may start on the PS but I think he’ll be promoted once they see how Wilson is playing…

Roberson’s versatility makes him a valuable commodity, but I only see him staying on the PS…unless case someone goes-down…

Speaking of PS, I have Taylor listed-after last season, not including a RB on your PS is bizaar…

Lambert pulled-in an INT, he’ll be on the PS in case a CB goes-down…

As will Quddus and Lorenzen.

by EZRider2 on Aug 26, 2011 3:46 PM CDT reply actions

It seems like us...

Joselio Hanson will be traded and we need another DB. We need depth there and a veteran player! Patrick Robinson is going to be great but needs more work before getting significant playtime! You can’t expect him to shut down a receiver without help over the top. I hope Patrick Robinson proves me wrong but a Joselio Hanson can be a good insurance policy!

by Lostastic on Aug 26, 2011 4:20 PM CDT reply actions

I think that Hargrove will be released from the Eagles and could be available

and also Philip Hunt is a possibility to be released- he looks like he might be a promising 2nd year guy. However, he could be headed for the practice squad.

I think it could be possible that Roby would be released- gunners on kickoffs might not be as important this year, our wrs get nicked up often (Lance, Colston etal) and we have some promising young wrs such as Montez Billings and Arrington, Morgan.

Joselio Hanson is no star. I would rather have PRob. If Hanson were a safety I would say yes. But, I don’t see where we need him.

by Philinwood on Aug 26, 2011 4:35 PM CDT reply actions

seems like Lorenzen would be a good idea because he has some QB experience (for an emergency)

but, it doesn’t seem like they are giving him much time. Sunday should be revealing- maybe we’ll get a better look then. Doesn’t seem to me they are very impressed with him.

Also, if Hargrove gets released he could work as a DE/DT especially in light of the possible Will Smith suspension and the fact we don’t really have a great pass rush. as far as Joselio Hanson is concerned, I say go with PRob. He’s got more potential. Get a backup safety.

If Hargrove comes back even for a bit that would make me smile

Although if he gets cut by the eagles he must be out of gas.

Can’t disagree with this roster much although I can’t wait till after the raiders game to reevaluate.

Looking for Shaun Rogers, our secondary, and for Brees to have big games.

by NYCSaint on Aug 26, 2011 5:13 PM CDT reply actions

Andy Reid is bullish on some young guys and a few guys that have been around a while

so Hargrove mightnot even get the lookk he deserves. Especially since Mie Patterson came back.

I think Cam has been playing mostly with the 2nd teamers.

Fully expect them to bring him along slowly and for him to play mostly a backup role his 1st season. Depending on that cursed injury bug, and the timeing and duration of the anticipated Smith suspention, will probably determine Jordans playing time.

from the top..

one more blocker type needed.. either FB or TE.. like bond said.. the buzz on the nola-beat has been about 2 FBs & 3TEs.. either that or 1 FB & 4 TEs, we need total of 5..
not enough OLs.. tennat will be the swing guy, but you would think another guard would be wise..
morgan will go either on IR or be cut.. hoping he declines any possible recruiting from another team.. & we can keep him in the PS (even injured) 6 receivers, the 6th: arrington or billings..
defense:
ingram seems like will get the ax.. can’t stay on the field..
need another corner & one less safety.. they have waited for washington all camp (don’t know if he has even practiced once..) he may squeeze in for resume’ alone.. one less safety.. reis & prielou are too similar.. one goes..

since all i'm doing is adding..

the numbers don’t add up.. some sur+ positions like DE & LB will need extra cuts.. bussey, even though i think he’s got great upside, might go.. also charleston or turk.. still might be missing a cut.. hell.. let’s cut brees (the evil one with dismal declining skills) and make stujo happy..

overreact to a repeated theme..?

i’d call it: finally react.. there is recurring trend among some bloggers.. with the stu at the helm.. who bring the “declining-skills” card consistently every time he misses a pass..
i think they are right somehow.. the guy had a reconstructive shoulder surgery.. it has been 6 years.. all the nicely tacked ligaments have loosened up.. he’s 6 years older.. his arm has obviously weakened..
what i still see is his quality as QB.. & his ability to adapt to a game situation & take the team for a drive.. still good @ that.. maybe he cannot throw that big ball over the top, anymore.. but he is still better than 25-28 starting QBs in the game..

your one-liner makes you one of them.. it's the way stu/pizza play the argument..

as if to say that HE IS TE WEAK LINK of the team & and the fire that follows (that they so much enjoy.. ) that i’m aiming at.. i just compiled the statement as obvious, above.. and i’m giving the reasons why, just for good measure.. not just instigating debate, like my fellow bloggomites.. i already know.. but i take the loss of flare validating what his contributions are.. still..
it took 30+ years to find a brees.. better squeeze the juice till the end.. cause it might take another 30+..

Stu makes a point of saying it is a graduated decline.

In other words Drew is on the downside of his hill. He reasons that Drew will gradually get worse and does not say that he isn’t any good anymore. I get that. Listen everybody is born, goes through puberty, hits their prime usually middle twenties to early thirties. Then it’s a gradual decline till you hit about 6 feet under.

I think what everyone is getting confused about

is they are envisioning Brees’ career and other careers as a bell curve. Most players don’t have a bell curve career. Look at Brett Favre- he had his best statistical season the year (2009)before the season he retired and had his worst season his last season (2010). 2008 was a crummy year too.

How about Kurt Warner- he didn’t have a bell curve and certainly the teams he played for affected his stats (curve).
Vinny Testaverde is another example and if Payton Manning is one the downside of a bell curve it doesn’t appear so to me.
