Watching The Saints play Oakland last night confirmed something I've been thinking for a long time. Why not just skip kicking the extra point and focus on trying to make more than 50% of of 2 pt attempts?
Why not? From a fan's point of view, it would make the games a whole lot more exciting. It would mess up the brains of opposing Head Coaches, Offensive Coordinators and Defensive Coordinators. Heck, if we can kick an onsides kick coming out of half-time in a Super Bowl, surely we can try this. Payton can always abandon the idea mid season if it's a disaster. But, we have the personnel to do it. It could be revolutionary. It would be another way of getting more of our numerous weapons into the flow of the scoring game. Our Red Zone offense just might go to another level with all of this practice and experience laying it on the line when it REALLY counts. There is little reward without risk. We could be feared around the league. We clearly could get some serious swagger if it works out well. We might force teams to make changes in their rosters and game plans to compensate. It just might be another time to be bold!!
I know not everyone will buy into this, but it clearly would be a macho thing to do. Good old fashioned knock the snot out of them football with no fear. Less wussy kicking. Just when defenses sell out to the run and load the LOS, dink a little pass to Graham or Colston. The only downside is the refrigerator run would have to be abbreviated because no one would risk missing an exciting play as opposed to an extra point kick.
