Saints Sign Tackles Alex Barron and George Foster, Release Others
The Saints have made some more roster moves this morning, signing a couple of offensive tackles for added depth on the front line. The team has added Alex Barron, formerly of the Cowboys, and George Foster, most recently of the UFL's Omaha Nighthawks. Per their official Twitter account:
Other transactions that Payton announced after practice: the Saints agreed to terms with OTs Alex Barron & George Foster....
To help make some room, the Saints have released kicker Jacob Rogers and placed LB Jeremiha Hunter on IR, which means his season is over and he does not count against the 90-player roster limit.

I wonder if the Saints will move Alex Barron to Gaurd and see if he excels there. Leonard Davis and Robert Gallery were both terrible at Tackle (in space), but made pro-bowls playing “in a phone booth” at Guard. Carl Nicks was drafted in the 5th round at Tackle, but looks All-Pro at Guard. Just a thought.

I’d call that his best shot to make the 53 man roster.

Don’t see why he wouldn’t be on the roster. If he can play guard, seems pretty much guaranteed barring injury he would be. We only have Strief, Bushrod and Stinch right?

IR
if the saints elected to put hunter on IR instead of cutting him… then can i assume they find him to be too valuable to cut? what are the benefits of putting him on IR vs cutting him if he’s not going to contribute this season anyway? saw this happen with arnoux… kept him on IR a few years and then released him this year..
can someone explain the idea behind this?
To answer your question
If he gets put on IR this year, he will still technically be on the team, meaning he will be around next season for OTAs and training camp. He will have a year to study the playbook and watch film, and then can have a reasonable shot at making the 53 man roster next season
Peyton, I can eat Oreos faster than you!!!!
What was the length of his contract? If it’s a one year deal, he won’t be on the roster after next year’s free agency period starts.
"I was not on the boat in question" -Darren Sharper
The fact
That they put him on IR as opposed to cutting him, to me, means that they want him around again next season. Whether that means resigning him to a new contract or if he already has a multi-year contract
Peyton, I can eat Oreos faster than you!!!!
You guys sure have short memories.
He’s an undrafted free agent. He wasn’t put on IR because they want to keep him. He was put on IR because they have no choice. If a person is injured while playing for you, you have to keep them for the rest of the year. Well, technically, you have one other option, you can waive them injured and hope somebody else takes him off your hands. If nobody claims him, he reverts to your IR then.
So either way, barring a miracle, he’s on your IR for the rest of the year. Or at least until he can pass a physical, and for an Achilles injury that’s quite likely the rest of the year. Or longer, but your responsibility ends with the start of the new league year.
No, the sign that they still want him — if there is one — will come if they keep him around next year. Otherwise, he was a camp body who was lucky enough to get hurt. He’ll at least make some money that way, unlike those who get cut in about a month.
To answer your question
They put…what?…what do you mean I did this already….what are you talking about, I would’ve remembered.
Anyway, FriarBob, I understand your point and thanks for some clarity regarding IR. However, I would say that Payton & co. have a tendency to put young players that they like on IR with different injuries. Adrian Arrington for example was placed on IR with an injury. I can’t remember what it was exactly, but I don’t think it was something that would’ve kept him out all year. That was kind of my thinking on this.
Peyton, I can eat Oreos faster than you!!!!
Chip Vaughn was placed on IR in 2009. He wasn’t retained in 2010.
"I was not on the boat in question" -Darren Sharper
On the contrary
He was placed on IR in 2009, then was given a legit shot at making the final 53 in 2010. Couldn’t make the cut, but he was given the shot in training camp and early pre-season games
Peyton, I can eat Oreos faster than you!!!!
Well, technically, you have one other option, you can waive them injured and hope somebody else takes him off your hands. If nobody claims him, he reverts to your IR then.
You also have the option of offering an injury settlement and parting ways. That would ultimately be up to the player, though.
"I was not on the boat in question" -Darren Sharper
Thanks Bob. Good explanation.

get some kinda pay/compensation for the injury with the team. I’ve tried to decipher that in the Old CBA, without much comprehension.

does anybody know
exactly what pick or picks did we get for the reggie bush trade?
Not made public. Believed to be a SWAP of picks, probably related to Reggie’s production. For example if Reggie does __, the saints give Dolphins their 4th for the Dolphins 2nd. If Reggie tanks or stays injured, the Dolphins give a 5th for the Saints 7th. No telling what the actual agreement is, but probably something along that line of thinking.

Alex Barron
The dude is a walking disaster. I cannot believe you would want him on your team or near the team or in the stands watching the game. I saw a cowboys game last year where he single-handedly lost the game for the cowboys with unnecessary holding penalties. Literally, the game was on the line, a perfect, game-winning pass was completed, and for no reason at all, nowhere near the play, Barron was busy holding his man. And this was after repeated penalties throughout the game. I hope he never plays a down in the Black and Gold. To paraphrase Mike Singletary, “I’d rather play with 10 men.”

The dude is worse than Victor Riley. Terrible at Tackle. If it isn’t holding, it’s a false start. He’s just not good in space. I think EVERYONE agrees with that.
Either the Saints signed him to see how he looks at Guard
or
They signed him to have better than UDFA competition for the second team d-line to practice against. Payton’s had to shorten a few practices because he just doesn’t have enough players at certain positions.
Loomis and Payton aren’t dumb. They won’t keep him unless he adds value to the roster, and the only way he does that is at Guard (talking 53 man roster)

You forgot to mention
He was part of an offensive line that allowed their starting QB to be molested at the hands of the Giants, rendering him helpless to an injury that sidelined him for the remainder of the season. EFF Alex Barron, I would rather have Vern Troyer at RT.

Yeah, Barron was the other top-rated OT in 2005
Folks had them pretty evenly ranked, I think, and the Rams took him a few picks after we took JB, but Barron struggled to just not be called a bust.
Barron was a bum for the Rams – my St. Louisan in-laws hated him, and last year when they traded Barron for Bobby Carpenter, my father in law called it a “pass the trash” maneuver, and I think both Carpenter and Barron ended up being bums for their new teams, too.
I can’t imagine him making the team, but maybe he’ll get better?

Career Sacks Allowed
31
Is this the reason for Romo’s broken collar bone?
7th season/31 sacks=4.43 sacks allowed per season. If you figure he played much as a rookie.
He only allowed 2 last season. Wonder if either was when Tony got hurt.

Ok
Since you want to play that way, why dont you go look up penalties. Dude is not a quality guy, if he was, the Cowboys would have kept him one more year instead of letting a bunch of rookies play.

I have the idea that Barron stinks on ice
but, if he comes into camp and plays well enough that the Pay-Loo feel he could benefit the team, I’ll trust their judgment – but I’ll probably say a few GAAAAAA!!!!s at first until I can pull myself together and remind myself that I said I’d trust the Pay-Loo…
