Update: Current New Orleans Saints Free Agency & Roster Breakdown
The Saints announced more than a few roster moves late yesterday following training camp practice. Following the release of a handful of rookie undrafted free agents and the signing of just one new cornerback, Trumaine McBride, the Saints are under the 90-player roster limit with a total of 88 players, by my calculations. That means they've actually got room to sign a couple of their own unrestricted free agents or make a splash by bringing in yet another top-notch free agent from somewhere else.
Below you'll find my latest attempt at a roster breakdown by position. Then you'll be treated to a complete, up-to-date roster (as of the publishing of this post) and full sortable Saints roster. That's followed by a list of the Saints remaining unsigned free agents, also in an easy to use, sortable table. But first, a quick recap of the action from the past two days.

Whose bright idea was it to increase roster limit to 90
Seems a little extreme to me. You have almost the active roster limit on both D and O. Gonna be a problem getting everybody reps now that the CBA is certified and everyone can practice.

La Canfora says DE Matt Roth is in talks with us, Broncos, and Cardinals
by BlackandGold4ever on Aug 5, 2011 7:35 AM CDT reply actions
Rather us go after Charleston.
He’s the only one of our FA’s left that I’d like to see come back besides Sharper. With the Fresh Prince suspended for 4 games we’re gonna need a good rotation on the end.

Matt Roth is a much better fill in
for Will Smith than Charleston.

the question is

Show do love to see me some Ole Miss players
being on the Saints roster. They’ve had a few good 1’s. [ Yeah and to ya’ll LSU fans, I know thet’ve had some bad 1’s too.]

I think that’s the Bills super secret plan of ‘Suck to Get Andrew Luck’ which goes into effect mid October when they are 0-7
Disagree
They only draft RBs
Reggie may not have had it Ingram, but Sproles will be just Ivory.

So right now it is Washington vs. Buffalo? Any other entries in this race? What would be slightly amusing is if Luck had a bad season and no other QB looked good enough for the #1 pick.
by BlackandGold4ever on Aug 5, 2011 10:21 AM CDT up reply actions
They drafted a QB high this year… but, I guess they could do a Carolina.

Andrew Sharp SBN thinks that is SF's plan of action.
I think that’s where Al Davis, not to be confused with our own AIDavis, or Cincinnati might be headed also. Buffalo actually has a good QB in Ryan Fitzpatrick,IMO.

I think
Re-signing Marvin Mitchell should be our top priority. He plays a lot in our 3-4 sets and who else do we have behind Vilma? Underrated guy. I can’t believe more people aren’t calling for us to re-sign him.
Peyton, I can eat Oreos faster than you!!!!
CP and I both spoke about this a couple of days ago. Only team I have seen show interest in him is Cincy, so hopefully he comes back.

Looks like the Saints hosted Olin Kreutz yesterday. Kreutz didn’t re-sign with the Bears because the Bears only wanted to pay him 4 million instead of 4.5 million.
The Saints hosted free agent C Olin Kreutz on Thursday.
Undersized second-year prospect Matt Tennant is currently working as the Saints’ starter inside. Kreutz is 34 and declining, and has been considering retirement. A chance to play for a legit Super Bowl contender might change that.
rotoworld
Aside from defensive players in the FRONT 7 who can bring pressure, our biggest need is either a back-up interior lineman who can play all 3 positions, or a starting C to allow Tennant to be back-up at all 3 positions.
It also looks like the Saints are trying to fix the LB and Pressure problems.
The Saints, Broncos, and Cardinals are all showing interest in free agent OLB Matt Roth.
Roth has been adamant about not playing in a 4-3 defense, which would seem to rule out New Orleans and Denver. (Barring a change of heart, of course.) Roth would make a lot more sense in Arizona if the Cardinals hadn’t kept Joey Porter. Perhaps the Cards would reconsider Porter’s fate if they acquired Roth

Now for those who aren’t familiar with Matt Roth, the following is from<a href="http://api.viglink.com/api/click?format=go&drKey=1141&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.saintsreport.com%2Fforums%2Fshowthread.php%3Ft%3D202724&v=1&libid=1312560327265&out=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.profootballfocus.com%2Fblog%2F2011%2F07%2F23%2Ffree-agency-2011-the-matt-roth-sweepstakes%2F&ref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.saintsreport.com%2Fforums%2Fforumdisplay.php%3Ff%3D2&title=LB%2FDE%20Matt%20Roth%20-%20SaintsReport%20Community%20Forums&txt=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.profootballfocus.com%2Fblog…h-sweepstakes%2F&jsonp=vglnk_jsonp_13125607519781" > profootballfocus:
Who is Matt Roth? I can’t answer with intimate details but I can tell you a bit about the football player.
.
● Had a very productive 2008 that went under the radar opposite the big sack numbers Joey Porter put up.
● Lost his spot as a Dolphin in 2009, went to Cleveland and played so well Eric Mangini decreed him the best player on the roster.
● Started 2010 in blistering, relentless form before tailing off a bit towards the end of the year.
.
Essentially, Matt Roth is a proven performer. He can play the run, and he makes life real tough for a quarterback. He may never lead the league in sacks, but he will help the coverage guys behind him by generating a lot of pressures. There should be a significant market for his services and I’ll look at five teams that should be interested and assess the fit, in this, the Matt Roth Sweepstakes.
So for those who thought the Saints didn’t have any more money, or that the names I thought were possibilities the Saints would pursue were too big, I ask why are the Saints going after a $4 million dollar center and a LB who started all 16 games last year?
Doesn’t sound so far fetched to me. Kind of like thinking they might go after Franklin since they pursued MeBane and Jenkins. Obviously they feel they have a need at Center and at LB, and they are looking for a starter quality player.

I don’t know why we can edit posts but not comments.
When people write post they put time and effort into what they are writing. Comments tend to be shot from the hip. If you could edit a comment people would feel like they could say anything and not worry about it because they could just go back and edit it. Trust me, If members had the option of editing comments it would lessen the experience of SBN.
