An Updated Prediction of the Saints 53-Man Roster: Version 3.0

Really not too many changes to my Saints 53-man roster predictions since the Saints defeated the Raiders in their third preseason game. Only two significant moves actually.

I obviously eliminated defensive end Alex Brown, whom the Saints released earlier this week. In his place, I have moved Will Smith to the active roster since we're a week away from the start of the season and we haven't heard anything about his suspension.

Since the Saints signed kicker John Kasay to the their roster, I also had to add  him to mine. To make room I went ahead and moved Joe Morgan to injured reserve.

Mitch King and Brian de la Puente are my final two cuts and I wish there was just a little more room on the roster to fit these two guys.

I only have five players on the practice squad so there is some room there.

Make the jump to check out my entire 53-man roster. Then discuss!

anyone played Madden 12 yet? The new “cut days” feature on the franchise mode is pretty sweet, but it’s also kinda brutal…I hate cutting guys like Joique Bell and such to make room for other essential backups.

Hartely strikes again & Too Many LBer's....

Don’t think Bussey makes the final cut. Also don’t think Tom Johnson makes it and Mitch King gets his spot. Jordan Black is also out and de la Puente is in. Carrying that extra kicker really hurts.

by Saint for life on Sep 1, 2011 6:40 AM CDT reply actions

I can’t agree about Tom Johnson…everybody is happy with him and I think it will be important to have a solid rotation there to rest the older guys and keep them fresh.

by BlackandGold4ever on Sep 1, 2011 6:44 AM CDT up reply actions

As soon as a good opportunity arises, we need to find a kicker to permanently replace Hartley rather than one to sub for him when he has his annual physical or emotional breakdown.

man.. 53 just ain't enough.. is it..?

all i wanna do is ADD players.. darn..
i see you are not buying into the 2-FB theory.. but do you cut to get a 2nd FB..?
de la puente seems like a very tough cut.. specially since no one is sure that c. brown is actually worth anything.. hmmm..?
6- receivers possible..? arrington, but for who..?
a lot of good looking DTs left behind.. man this is impossible..
i still think another veteran LB gets cut..
the 2 kicker thing sure is costly, fat-punk.. wer u @?

Ivory

So with the PUP list (aka Chris Ivory), does this mean he is ineligible to play for the season? Or can we use him when he becomes physically able to play?

by Valmo on Sep 1, 2011 6:54 AM CDT reply actions

Never mind - answering my own question,

A player who begins the regular season on the PUP list must sit out his team’s first six games. After that point, a team has three weeks to start having the player practice; once the player begins practicing, the team has another three weeks to put the player on the active roster. If the player is not activated by that time, or if he does not begin practicing within that three week window, he must remain on the PUP list for the remainder of the season. – Wikipedia

by Valmo on Sep 1, 2011 6:56 AM CDT up reply actions

So then who goes?

When we bring back Ivory, who gets cut…assuming everyone stays healthy.

by Bolo4AD on Sep 1, 2011 9:12 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Hartley to IR

If the rumors are true that Hartley is out for 8 weeks, why burn a roster spot for him (and carry 3 kickers)? If Hartley goes to IR, Morestead can handle KO and punts, Kasey FG and extra points. Hartley comes back next year and picks up where he left off…scaring us to death.

Not believing this rumor yet

As for as I’ve seen, only Bobby Hebert has tweeted that the Fat Punk could “possibly” be out 8 weeks. “Possibly” isn’t a very strong word and since when has Bobby been a source for breaking news? No other Saints writer has given any updates on our little puggy pigskin-popper. I guess we’ll have to wait until Monday when Payton said he will address any team injuries with the media.

Surprise, surprise surprise.

Didn’t Ivory get his latest injury when he returned to practice or was that considered part of his rehab? If it was practice does that make him ineligible for PUP?

Larimore and Delaponte make Team

Larimore dominated the Raiders. Delaponte is second team behind Evans and Nicks. They make the team. DT Johnson is on practice squad. Jordan Black does not make team. I also see Prioleau not making roster due to Brees big contract. Saints will keep lower salaries to save for upcoming contracts. I have Reis making the team because of his salary and special teams play. I also don’t see the Saints carrying 7 LB’s. That means Bussey and dare I say it……Scott Shanle(Adopted son of Greg Williams) gets cut and becomes LB coach. Shanle just can’t do it anymore. Don’t hate.

doesn't it seem irresponsible the way the NFL is handling the Will Smith issue?

it’s been a few years now, the first game is 2 weeks away. Are things still up in the air? Or, is it that Will is actually suspended at this point and the only uncertainty is created by him and the Saints tryoing to overcome that suspension?

All and all, my opinion is that this isa irresponsible by the NFL; this issue going on for so long has now affected three seasons. You can say it’s had a minimal impact or more than minimal- it’s debateable. The truth is that Payloo have to make decisions about personnel (and defensive schems) based on – what- he might now play- but then again he might? It might be games at the beginning of the season- it might be in the middle?
I think this is ridiculous that they are doing this. And what about those guys in Minnesota, they don’t have to sit out , do they?

by Philinwood on Sep 1, 2011 8:24 AM CDT reply actions

Actually, there is a reason. It’s not actually callousness — though they’ve had more than enough of that already by being jackasses about suspending only some of the players who tested positive and not all of them.

The reason is that all the negotiations still aren’t fully finalized! We don’t hear much about this, but to date they have the CBA, which allows us to actually have a season. They still do not have an agreement on suspension policies, drug policies, and a few other things. This situation falls under those conditions. Until the NFL and the NFLPA can reach some sort of compromise on those issues, Will gets hung out to dry, never knowing whether he’ll be available to play the next week or not.

It sucks, but it’s not solely the NFL’s fault. Nor is it solely the NFLPA’s fault either, of course. The NFLPA is dragging their feet on the HGH testing, and I’d bet very good money that the suspension policies (and these incidents, which should NEVER have been suspensions in the first place) are part of the concessions they are hoping to win by stringing the HGH issue out.

by FriarBob on Sep 1, 2011 10:03 AM CDT up reply actions

Then it should not be applicable this year

In fact, they should just throw it out – there’s something called due process and statute of limitations. I know NFL makes it’s own rules, but if the issue cannot be resolved promptly it should be dropped.

No Swanson Miller or Morgan?

I think Bussey goes and Swanson stays. True he played later in the game last week but if he overpowers his man(more than once) who was also a 2nd team member, it must make him a 1st teamer. One of our major weakness last season was lack of a pass rush with front four and Swanson appears to be “that guy”. If he plays that way tonight, I think GW & Payton knows what they must do. Morgan is a diamond in the rough & for him not to be at least on practice squad so they can bring him along like we did Meacham is showing……………. not going to go there. We’ll see tonight.

by fshabazz on Sep 1, 2011 8:49 AM CDT reply actions

Agree with you on Miller

He got a lot of good #1 and #2 snaps in Oxnard, and I think the coaches like him. Should be a good clue in how much he gets to play tonight.

Nose Tackles shouldn't be small and nimble

You can maybe play with one DT that is undersized, but you have to have at least one guy that is a giant and eats up blockers and frees up the other guys. Remember last year when Tampa drafted 2 very good undersized DTs? Neither put up the stats they should, because they were both getting adequate coverage. Remi Ayodele was in that role last year, and now Shaun Rogers is the big fat strong man in the middle. At 6-2, 280 lbs Mitch King just isn’t going to command a double team or push a guard into the backfield the way Shaun Rogers does.

Marques Colston isn't impressing me in the preseason either

Doesn’t mean we should cut him to make room on the roster for Joe Morgan. Its the preseason. It doesn’t matter unless you are fighting to get or keep a job. Rogers doesn’t have to prove himself to get this job.

I know what Colston can do for the Saints. Question is, what can Rogers do for the Saints. If we cut Rogers, that doesn’t guarantee Morgan a spot, don’t know where you got that. Don’t be so sure about not having to prove yourself on this team, I’m sure you know that by now.

Sorry VA,

I read too fast. I got what you’re saying. You mean cutting Colston to make room for Morgan. My bad.

by tommy v on Sep 1, 2011 1:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Does any of that change the fact that King is too small to play the position?

Without someone of Rogers’ size next to him, King, or any DT isn’t going to produce unless you expect him to play opposite the other team’s 3rd string all season. Rogers job is to force the other team to use 2 guys on him. He’s one of the best guys in the NFL at that. It allows your other, more athletic DT (Ellis) to have only one man to beat, and produce stats. There’s pretty much one man in the NFL that can make it consistantly beat a double team, and he’s locked up with Detroit for a while. Mitch King simply doesn’t have the size or physcal ability to do what Shaun Rogers does. King plays Sedrick Ellis’s role on the D-Line, not Shaun Rogers’s.

You can add Fabian Washington to IR because the Saints just put him there. What are the terms of Will Herring’s contract? I would cut him, because he hasn’t shown anything at all. I would be just as comfortable with Casillas starting and Wilson and Bussey as back-ups. That would make room for Mitch King

Cocaine is a heck of a drug...

Someone had the audacity to bring up Colston’s name in this topic/conversation? Name 5 recievers in the NFL stronger and with better hands than Colston and I’ll shut up the entire season. Then someone else said cut Shaun Rodgers? Rodgers penatrates the O-Line by himself more than any one man on the team! Tommyv said " from what i can see of the fella…." Is there a bent hanger you use for an antenna and you change your channels by turning knobs? Rodgers plugs holes and drives his man back by himself while the most of the others are in a stalemate. I like King too but not just for his tattoos.

Better hands? Yes. Stronger? Somewhat debatable

5 recievers with better hands and stronger than Colston? Im a long time Saints fan and love Colston, but here I go;
Larry Fitzgerald
Andre Johnson
Calvin Johnson
Brandon Marshall
Roddy White

Putting White kills me because I hate the Falcons more than almost anything. But the guy is sick. None of those 5 QBs have even close to a better QB than Brees. But I guarantee if any of these 5 were a Saint, 100 catches would be guaranteed.
