Saints Cut Chris Reis, Pierson Prioleau and Others; Chris Ivory to PUP

The Saints aren't wasting any time trimming down to the necessary 53-man roster. And with more than 25 roster spots to eliminate, who can blame them.

Apparently the earlier reports of Chris Ivory being placed on injured reserve are not true and he's actually been placed on the PUP list. That's better news.

Also incredibly surprising are the release of both Chris Reis and Pierson Prioleau. Right now that leaves just Jonathan Amaya and Isa Abdul-Quddus behind Malcolm Jenkins and Roman Harper. Perhaps moving Leigh Torrence to safety is a definite possibility.

The Saints have also parted ways with both tight ends Tyler Lorenzen and Tory Humphrey, meaning the team is only two deep at the position with Jimmy Graham and David Thomas, unless Michael Higgins has made the team, which would be a surprise. Still on the roster are both fullbacks however, Jed Collins and Korey Hall, though that could change soon.

By my count there should be nine more cuts/moves to be made get the roster down to 53.

A full list is after the jump.

Larry Holder is a tweeting machine and he's got all the info:

Latest #Saints transactions via @caplannfl: Placed RBs Patrick Cobbs and Chris Ivory, WR Joe Morgan, SPaul Oliver on IR.

More from @caplannfl: Moved DE Greg Romeus from active/NFI list to reserve/NFI list. Released OTs Jordan Black and George Foster.

More from @caplannfl: Released - S Quincy Butler, TE Tory Humphrey, CB Trumaine McBride, Ss Pierson Prioleau and Chris Reis.

More from @caplannfl: Waived RB Chris Ivory from IR w: injury settlement. Waived TE Tyler Lorenzen, LB Roberson, DT Larimore, WR Billings.

I'm also hearing like @miketripletttp that the Ivory/IR news isn't correct and that Ivory is actually on the PUP list via a league source.

I’m hearing this might be bad info on Chris Ivory. Think he’s actually headed for PUP list. Stay tuned. #Saints.

Also, I thought we were down to two TEs as well, until ‘born in areadcode 318’ kindly reminded me that some guy named Mike Higgins is a TE.

?

So, we have 2 tight ends and 2 safeties? Somehow this is Hartley’s fault.

by GnomeChumpsky on Sep 2, 2011 10:26 PM CDT reply actions

Counting Amaya and Abdul-Qudus, we have four safeties. I still blame Hartley for whoever gets cut that I thought shouldn’t have; he used up all his good luck in postseason 2009.

Is anybody else watching the epicness of this TCU v Baylor game?

putting him on IR keeps other teams from signing him off our practice squad, because a not healthy Morgan is a cut being that he’s inelgible for PUP and we need a fully healthy bottom of the roster going into week 1

had right the TE wipe-out..

surprised to see both tackles black & foster gone.. same with both reis & prielou.. ok with ivy to the pup.. there’s no way he could remotely contribute in less than a month.. was hoping they would cut that herring dude.. that did not make a tackle all preseason.. c. ingram still around too.. hopefully bussey won’t get the ax.. & fat-punk still hanging around the training room looking for his old stash.. (can’t remember where he hid it..)

not real happy about safety depth

I don’t think Torrence is a hard enough hitter to play safety. I was hopin Oliver woulod step up but it appears he is injured. Abdul Quddus- he’s been under the radar it seems. Surprised only 2 TEs- our TEs (actually all TEs) seem to get dinged up often. Maybe they are working on some deals. 2 FBs might mean they will use 1 FB instead of a TE on occasion. I’m prediciting Sharper will be signed and IAQ will be ps.

FIFY...

“Torrence is a hard enough hitter to play strong safety.” But, if he can sniff out pass plays and break them up, he will be an asset, as a backup.

Not happy about OT depth too...

As it stands, if Higgins makes the team and we keep two FB’s, they have reshuffled the mix between FB and TE’s (still five)… it looks thin at OT (surprised about Black) and basically they are using that spot for an extra kicker…. a little risky if this is the final outcome but we havent heard the last I guess

Bring the metal....

by bondcrash on Sep 3, 2011 2:16 AM CDT reply actions

Oliver is still on this team??????

My head is going to explode. Why would they cut some of these other guys and keep him around on IR?

"It's better to burn out than fade away."

by SaintsFan-KS on Sep 3, 2011 7:03 AM CDT reply actions

They must have info on other cuts.....

For the Saints not to keep 3 TEs and also let Torrence & Reis go MUST they have information on other guys being cut on other teams. If we keep 2 FBs, it means they don’t like the output of the OLine and need 2 FBs( to pickup blitz, clear out LB on run plays, run the ball) and 1 FB would be too tired by 3rd Qtr. They still might cut one but until they do, thats what I’m thinking. In order to keep Morgan, Billings had to go. Damn…. Montez has great hands too. I’m really begining to hate on Hartley…. His new name is “Mr good luck/bad luck”. Because we had to bring in another kicker, a quality player has to get cut…. Reis & Pierson….. blame Hartley. You’re a fan favorite but one was prob gonna get cut anyway NOT BOTH.

by fshabazz on Sep 3, 2011 10:26 AM CDT reply actions

Ok looks like I posted this on the wrong post

I guess the only one that really surprises me is Chris Reis

Pierson Prioleau is someone I thought might make it also but cutting both sure puts us thin at Safety. Anybody heard any more about Sharper, from anyone besides Sharper or his agent.

Chris Reis is cool but.....

Chris Reis was a good player. Played with heart everytime he was on the field but sometimes that don’t translate to the type of “position” player you’re looking for. I like that he is 6’-1", a head hunter on special teams BUT wasn’t a great safety…. Is a good Safety but not a “great” safety. On a team with a lot of good players on defense, he just needed to be better, not great just a better safety. I was kinda suprised because he DID recover that onside kick in the SB but…. he’s a safety and special teams is the only time he’s on the field unless 2 safeties in front of him is injured. I too think this opens the door to bring Sharper back.
