Ask Battle Red Blog: The Unofficial Q&A about the Houston Texans

Hello Saints fans.

Carr5xi_medium

Look at Drew Brees.  Now back to me.  /swings hair back and forth

Now back at Drew Brees.  Now back to me. /puts on gloves and does the "jazz hands"

Sadly, he isn't me.  But if he stopped throwing with accuracy and starts to crawl into fetal position in every offensive snap, he can start looking like me.

Look down. Back up.  Where are you?  You're on a boat.  With a pretty looking QB that your QB can look like.

What's in your hand?  Back at me.  I have it.  It's an oyster with two tickets to the Houston Texans Vs. New Orleans Saints game this coming Sunday.  Look again.  The tickets are now diamonds.  Anything is possible when your QB looks like David Carr and not a QB that's on the decline.  I'm on the turf.

Ahhhh the dreaded Texans

Been looking forward to this game since we looked like absolute s—t in the pre-season. How u feeling about the WR situation other than Johnson? Is Jacoby Jones in for a big day?

If you can't beat them, arrange to have them beaten-George Carlin

by AcquiredPanic on Sep 20, 2011 3:32 PM CDT reply actions

Gotta admit

Been looking forward to this game as well. A true test for our newly minted secondary. I hope we hold up well. Well as in less than 5td passes would be nice.

Anyhoo, I’m never too concerned about our WR corps. Ever. Johnson is the #1 target, sometimes #2. As for the rest, they’re mostly role players. Kevin Walter(s) is more of a blocking WR that you can rely on to make tough catches in the middle. Jacoby Jones is a speedster that is always a threat to break a big one. That’s if he catches the ball. David Anderson and Bryant Johnson seems to be playing the role of possession receivers.

As I mentioned above, Jacoby Jones is always a threat to score. Whether it be returning punts, or breaking one for a long TD. But Matt Schaub has plenty of weapons at his disposal(3 athletic TE’s and a H-back/fullback/Tight-End/WideReceiver/human swiss army knife in James Casey) and a good running games to back him up.

So the answer is a noyes.

If it’s for fantasy purposes, he’s always good for at least 45yds and a TD every other game or two. Start in deeper leagues as WR3 or Flex, never as a WR1 or WR2.

Capt. Nately: You're a shameful opportunist! What you don't understand is that it's better to die on your feet than to live on your knees.

Maybe late in his career Cunningham, not early Cunningham. He was Vick before Vick

If I had to compare Warren Moon to any QB, ironically it would be Drew Brees, although Moon was bigger & stronger. He had a cannon of an arm & probably the best set of WRs a QB could ever ask for (Drew Hill, Haywood Jeffires, Ernest Givins, Curtis Duncan, & Webster Slaughter). Sad part of that offense was the absolute lack of a running game, which is what led to the infamous incident where Buddy Ryan went & punched Kevin Gilbride for his moronic play calling

Yes.

Yes. Yes.

Middle of the D-line is very weak with Shaun Cody as our starting bag-o-suck NT and ILB’s that are still adjusting to the 3-4 scheme. But Cushing is starting to come around and our safeties are reliable in run-coverage.

That’s why I’m scared of Ingram. That dude is a battering ram shot out of a cannon.

I expect heavy doses of HB dives, draws, and screen from Sean Payton.

I expect the running game to work late in the game

The running game will depend on if we have to try to keep up with the High Powered Texan Offense. (Don’t laugh – Schaub-Johnson-Foster-Tate-Daniels – Nuff Said) Anyway, I don’t think we will see a New Orleans running game break out until we have a 7 point lead. They may dabble with it to test the D-Line, but Payton likes to throw way too much to run the ball early. If we do run the ball, expect PT to be the GTG. Even with his productivity last week, Ingram put the ball on the ground and the Bears recovered. It is all nothing more than rumor, speculation and inuendo at this point.

The key to life isn't doing what you are told not to do, it is knowing what is worth doing when told not to do it.

If I were Sean Payton

(and you should all thank your lucky stars that I am not) I would run up the middle from the first snap. It will almost always work.

biggest weakness is runs up the middle

Part of that is Wade’s scheme and part of it is personnel. If you commit to the run you will have some success. We’ll make a few plays in the backfield, but you will be able to spring a couple of big ones because someone gets too aggressive. Dolphins rookie had a lot of success last week when he cut back on us.

What's your thought on Kubiak this season?

In seasons past he’s been accused of bad game management (among other things)…has he turned the corner? 2-0 helps I’m sure.

by snowboard_kat on Sep 20, 2011 4:46 PM CDT reply actions

We started 2-0 last season

and everybody started hopping in the bandwagon. 10 games later, and these degenerate, luke-warm, bandwagon fans started calling for his head. Of course there are some die-hard fans out there that were calling for his head too, but it was mostly a mob of bandwagoners.

I’d like to believe that he’s turned the corner and playoffs is only a couple of knots away. The 2-0 record this year feels so much different from last year. Better game management(as shown in the 4th quarter of the Miami game) and great personnel decisions are starting to turn the “Fire Kubiak” bandwagon over.

I feel like I should disclaim that I’m a huge Kubiak fan. He’s an offensive mastermind that’s slowly learning how to become a better Head Coach. Having Phillips around for the defense helps him focus on getting better at the minute aspects of running a team. And so far, he’s done a great job.

Way too much was made about the position switch

Mario is basically playing the same role he has always played. He’s just standing up and aligning a little wider. He rushes the passer virtually every play. He might drop into coverage 2-3 times a game. He’s had to adjust some, and he’s still working on his footwork and some other technique stuff that is different from the stand up position. Every time he steps out on the field he looks more and more comfortable. Wade is also adding things little by little. I would say Wade has only put in maybe 75% of what he has planned. In other words I wouldn’t be surprised to see Mario used in a way we haven’t seen yet this weekend.

In the nickel package he’s back down as a traditional 4-3 pass rushing end.

by Jimbo03 on Sep 22, 2011 4:58 PM CDT up reply actions

need to clarify

I absolutely love the way Jenkins is playing for the Saints now. I was only “satisfied” with the pick at the time, because LB was such a glaring need and because there were so many 1st round worthy LBs in that draft. It seemed a shame not to grab one, and instead opt for a solid CB that would later become a FS. Given how atrocious the Saints LB corps is, I still think taking a LB there might have been the better move overall.

by HB-NOLA on Sep 21, 2011 11:19 AM CDT up reply actions

and instead opt for a solid CB that would later become a FS

Elite FS

Yeah at the time…or rather throughout the 2009 season, I was seriously doubting the Jenkins choice. But at the time, we still had Fujita and Vilma, and we went 13-0, so there wasn’t a whole lot to complain about…And seeing as Jenkins is a great successor to Darren Sharper, and learned a lot from him about the FS position, I think it worked out. You can’t fix everything though, and I think we’ll be worried about our linebacker corps for a very long time. Especially since GW plays this “bend don’t break” defense which seems to thrive on average linebackers and a solid/very good secondary. I think that if we had a great outside linebacker, our defense would go from good to great and we would go from Superbowl contender to Dynasty

that's funny - I wrote "elite FS" at first

I edited it out because that sentence was from the perspective of the draft. I doubt anyone expected Jenkins to become an elite FS at the time. For that matter, I don’t think he’s there quite yet, but I do think he will be.

Vilma is very good because he has a high football IQ and is a great leader. But he is undersized and it shows more often than I’d like. He really needs better support next him. Fujita was never more than a solid/good LB. The reason he seems better in retrospect is because Shanle et al. are all so wanting.

Had the Saints taken one of the elite LBs in the 09 draft, I think the Saints still would have won the Super Bowl, and they would be in a better position to win another one (or more) now.

I think we need to see Cushing play out this year before we can answer

He was amazing as a rookie, but between the suspension to start the year and nagging injuries he never really got going and was a disappointment last year. He’s been active through 2 weeks racking up tackles, but hasn’t had the same impact as a play maker he did his rookie year so far.

Hey

I wasn’t trying to start anything here. It was just a joke.

no problem at all

I got very annoyed by how badly the facts were reported in that case (despite always assuming Cush was steroid user). I reflexively respond when I see the same mistakes pop up again and again.

IIRC, he tested positive because they changed the threshold value.

Yes, without the threshold change, this would never have been an issue

I just wanna say. Good game guys.

It was nice talking to you, I’m just completely emotionally drained. I’m not pissed because overall we played well, but the field goals….I just……ugh.

The Defense was what I thought they were. Decent. I’m going to go crawl into a clorox bottle now.

Good luck in the playoffs guys. You got this…. until we meet again (maybe) in the SB.

What's your address?

Can someone tell me the address of the Texans Offensive Coordinator?

I’d like to send him a gift basket.

Every time Andre Johnson lined up on the left side, he was “defended” by PRob… and was wide open almost every time.

Every time he lined up on the right side, he was defended by Greer… and was shut down almost every time. (The blocking on that screen pass was a thing of beauty – credit where it’s due.)

Why the hell would the OC ever put AJ on the right side? No respect? Stupidity? Either way… I’m thankful that he didn’t see it or didn’t act on it.

I couldn’t believe it during the game. I was happy for our defense, but confused as to what the hell the Texans OC was “thinking”.
