The Official 2011 Saints 53-Man Roster

After all of today's cuts, here is what the Saints final 53-man roster looks like as they head into the regular season.

Interesting to note, the Saints are carrying two fullbacks yet only two tight ends. They are also going with five defensive tackles and seven linebackers.

Surprise players to make the final roster are linebacker Ramon Humber, safety Isa Abdul-Quddus and wide receiver Adrian Arrington. Glad to see they found room for both Tom Johnson and Mitch King. Obviously, they're taking up two roster spots by keeping both Garrett Hartley and John Kasay as placekickers.

Make the jump!

This roster is strange.

by AJG on Sep 3, 2011 5:51 PM CDT reply actions

I wouldn’t be surprised if we play a 3-4 defense with Sed Ellis as a DE against the Packers. Without Smith our DEs look terrible.

by AJG on Sep 3, 2011 5:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah I feel like our DEs have left something to be desired for a while now anyway.

3-4 would be an interesting look for our defense

If you're so inclined...

Light a candle this weekend for our secondary.

They are gonna need to stay healthy, or we’re screwed.

merriweather was cut by Pats

I wonder if he could be Jenkins backup

Say what ever you want we still have our Lombardi and there's nothing you can do about it

by mississippisaintsfan on Sep 3, 2011 10:13 PM CDT up reply actions

I would be ok with Meriweather

His stats look pretty good. But I have a feeling he will want to start somewhere. Idk why the Patriots waived him. 2x pro bowler. There must have been something wrong with his play that I don’t know about.

meriweather

i went to highschool with him… hes fast and good at his position but his issue is hes not a very good “team” player…

hes fast and good at his position but his issue is hes not a very good "team" player

Team player is not his issue. If it was, Belichick wouldn’t have kept him around for 4 seasons. He has decent speed and he’s very aggressive, too aggressive, which is his real problem.

His problem has always been maintaining his assignments. He gives up too many big plays trying to make the “kill shot” and he bites just a tad too easy on play fakes and out & up moves for someone who is a four year vet.

They Saints have a history of bringing in guys who spend too much time chasing receivers into the end zone. Meriweather would definitely fit that model.

Doesn’t matter anyway…..the Bears just signed him.

2 FB's vs 2TE's

Your 3 string TE is used primarily for blocking right? So why not just keep a FB that can do the blocking. The 2nd FB will be more of a hybrid, I guess.

a 230 pound FB would get killed @ the end of the line..

if not simply hurdled on the way to the back field.. to moonlight a TE you need a tackle.. maybe we get big-rog.. to play some TE.. “#90 has reported as eligible..”

I disagree re 230 lb FB

a 230 pound FB would get killed @ the end of the line

if you ask PT or Reggie Bush or Chris Ivory- or let’s go to other teams- Brian Westbrook- Ronnie Brown- Arian Foster- Marshawn Lynch, LeSean McCoy- to block someone in pass protection- why couldn’t our fullback

1) it’s not every play
2) Brees knows he’s ( the FB) expected to slow down the DL/LB guy not stuff him into the ground
3) it’s about technique and knowing what you can accomplish
4) most of the time you have help or you are chipping
5) Why would you put him at the end of the line like atraditional TE? – he could be in motion or in the slot- again it would be rare to have this happen- but disguising it would be easy.
6) he’s just another outlet pass- kinda like screen pass if the defense plays it in a way that allows it
7) Payton can make this work – it’s just another way for him to innovate

by the 9th plague on Sep 3, 2011 11:51 PM CDT up reply actions

they're not trying to push them straight down

they’re trying to push them back. They most likely won’t be blocking the bigger DTs if they’re on the end and DEs are usually more agile/lighter. There’s still the decent chance that a Tackle will be blocking the DE and the FB(TE) will get left with a LB.

Now that we have a 2011 season let's win the Superbowl!

by skinnykinney on Sep 3, 2011 11:57 PM CDT up reply actions

your points are valid.. i simply meant..

cannot replace the common duties of the TE, positioned as such (at the end, hand on the ground) with a FB.. & expect to run the rock well.. it ain’t just a chip block on pass protection..

Sign Brandon Merriweather

tell him he gets a HUgE bonus if he is a starter in the SB against his old Patriots team. If we don’t, I think the Eagles will sign him and it will be huge upgrade for them and really solidify their standing. Signing Merriweather might help us have a better shot at the NFC championship, even if he is a sub or nickel guy- who is our nickel guy?

Okay, for the record.I would rather have 1 FB and 3 TE's who can catch and block

okay 2 TEs that can catch and 2 TEs that can block- totalling to 3 not 4, and one FB and 1 other FB on Practice squad. For Clarification, 2 out of the three TEs are great catchers and 2 are great blockers .

by the 9th plague on Sep 3, 2011 7:54 PM CDT reply actions

I like Prob a lot.

But, what evidence is there, in a regular season game, against a team like GB, that he’s our guy as a safety?
Maybe you are right. Maybe PRob is our nickel guy. I have been a big fan of him. I see him playing a major role in the futiue. I would rather see someone else under the gun 9/8 as oposed to Prob and go through everyone else calling him (unjustifiably) Fred Thomas or Jason David. But, Merriwaethewr is a safety and I would venture that he wouldn’t start in front of MJ or RH- at least on my team. So.f he would come in and be a backup safety or a nickel guy, maybe it would work. I would think he is starved to get back to the SB and might buy in. Worth a try. Think he’s better than Jonathan Amaya or Isa Abdul Quddus?

It’s the league saying we can’t use this player, so why should the team and organization suffer by losing that roster spot too? The league is punishing the player (a crock of sh*t, BTW) not the team.

Keeping Johnson and King allows the staff to evaluate and give the two experience, which is very important because we won’t be able to afford Franklin AND Rogers next year.

I don’t quite understand two fullbacks and two tight ends, as opposed to 1 fb and 3 te’s yet.

Arrington better thank his stars Morgan got hurt, and I say that as an Arrington supporter.

I’m surprised Humber made it over Bussey.

I would have preferred to keep Newton or Foster over De La Peunte, but am happy we have depth at G now.

Just having 2 TE's kinda scares me.

Something’s gotta change there before long. Maybe Payton needs more time to figure out which FB he wants. Or, maybe he’s got a plan where one can also be a part-time TE. This is really weird and I don’t understand it, but I trust that Payton has a plan that’s sure to amaze us later down the road. Since Strief is now the full time RT, we may be seeing Charles Brown sometimes enter the game as a blocking TE. Is that possible? Or, Brown could come in at RT while Strief sometimes plays TE in certain situations.

I suspect de la Puente is only around until Nicks gets fully healthy again.

Either that, or he’s a backup G/T instead of a pure G backup.

by FriarBob on Sep 4, 2011 1:57 PM CDT up reply actions

He’s all-but said as much. He mentioned that both of these FBs have experience as playing TE. So he’s basically doing what he’s done almost every other year — kept a total of 4 players between TE and FB. He’s just shifted the “official” designation of the count around a bit.

And it wouldn’t surprise me at all to see Brown come in at RT and Strief shift out to the TE… except I’m not 100% sure that’s legal. Whoever is the “eligible receiver” on the end of the line has to report in to the ref. Can he do that coming from already being on the field? I would think he SHOULD be able to, but I’m not sure that logic applies to all of the NFL’s rules. In fact, I’m pretty sure it doesn’t to at least some of them…
