4th and inches.......Ingram on the bench.....WTF?!?!?!

I have never given Sean Payton a verbal beating, even on bad calls when he deserved it. But I have to ask you Sean, why did we draft Mark Ingram? I'm not gonna pull the stats but every Saints fan knows we have been horrible on 3rd and 1 for years. It is our most dreaded down. I would rather have a 4th and 20 situation over a 3rd and 1. Deuce Mcallister used to make this situation look easy and dear god I took him for granted at the time. How many times have we had to endure a pass play on 3rd of 1? 3rd and 1 is a gimme play for a lot of teams but we can't ever seem to be able to fall forward to get a first down. So, I was so excited that we drafted a power back to fix this. No more trick plays and stupid double reverses to convert. We now could just hand it off to Ingram and move the chains. Well, that what I thought until tonight!

Why? Oh why, Mr. Payton was Ingram on the sideline during the fourth down play? Isn't this the exact situation we drafted Ingram for? Why do you feel that you need to get cute on plays that there should be no thought about? Run the ball up the middle!!!! This wasn't like the play on the goal line at the end of the game. There was plenty of field for the Packers to not be able to concentrate solely on the run. (Which we probably wouldn't even have been in that situation with 3 seconds to go at the end of the game, if you would have just ran the ball on that fourth down) I know that we hadn't run the ball that well but hell, we didn't have a chance to due to playing catchup. (Thanks Defense!! You are all cut!!) I pray that this isn't the kind of SH_T we will be forced to watch all year when these short yardage plays come up. You have Nicks and Evans on the line, make them earn their money and move the damn defensive line 4 inches!! Oh, thats right, they weren't even given the chance to on that play. You decided you wanted to look cute and go against what everyone else would do, just so you can show what a mastermind you are. Have you been hanging around Les Miles? Why does it seems to work for Miles? I don't know but I'm guessing he made a deal with the devil.

So I ask again Mr. Payton, WHY DID WE DRAFT INGRAM? You don't buy a Corvette and go the speed limit. You don't buy an assault rifle and shoot at cans. You don't get a beautiful girlfriend just to look at her. YOU DON'T DRAFT A POWER BACK IN THE FIRST ROUND AND THROW ON 4TH AND INCHES!!!!!!!! I know the defense is the main reason we lost this game but I strongly believe we could have won despite this if we had converted and scored on this play. So please Sean, remember that even though Drew Brees is great, that some situations don't call for the ball to be in his hands. Call a QB sneak if you wanted him to have the ball. Or better yet, hand the ball off. Power backs are usually utilized in this situation last time I checked. It was nice of you to try to make up for this stupid decision at the end of the game but the goal line is a different situation. Maybe you should have gotten cute on that play? I have to endure WTF moments with LSU every week, please don't start making this a habit on Sunday's......again!!!!

4th and inches is alot different than w/e and 1

also, on the PA pass. We had Sproles in the backfield didn’t we? Who thinks you’re really going to give him the ball? Ingram has to at least be on the field in that situation. We threw the ball 49 times too i believe. No one really got a shot at w/e and 1 too much

Now that we have a 2011 season let's win the Superbowl!

What’s “w/e”?

(Sorry.. I thought you were talking about the last play.)

The 4th and inches actually pissed me off more than the last play

The plays needed to be switched. If Payton wanted to get “creative” the last play was the time to do it. The 4th and inches could have been an easy conversion. I know we struggled running but I really don’t think we even had time to even think about establishing a run because of playing from behind so quickly. (I haven’t looked at the stats yet so I’m really not even sure how many rush attempts we had) but it really didn’t seem like many.

21 rushing plays out of 73 total plays

less than 30%

Abandoning the run in the first quarter is dumb no matter what, even if you’re down 14. In fact, that may be the worst time to do it. You need to give your D a break, and scoring quickly on 5 plays is not the way to do it, even if it does get everyone’s adrenaline pumping again.

The problem with the 4 and 1 and the goal line play at the end wasn’t a problem with weapon choice. It was a problem of scheme. Both plays completely telegraphed what the Saints were doing. I hate that I’m repeating what was said earlier on SportsCenter, but it’s true. And while it can sometimes be important to dominate your opponent by telegraphing the play and executing it to perfection, you don’t do that against the World F***ING Champions!

On the horrible sack, we have to give the Packers some credit as well. I think it was the FB Collins that was given the responsibility of picking up a blitzing Clay Matthews (assuming that he was getting by Strief, which of course, anyone with a brain could have predicted), and Collins did his job – he undercut Clay and put him on the ground. The speed with which Clay got up and ran down Brees was ridiculous. The play scheme may have been sub-optimal, and it’s execution not much better, but the fact is Clay Matthews made the play. He was blocked and on the ground, and yet he still got to Brees in under 3 seconds. How the F*** does he do that?!!?!

At LEAST

QB sneak that hoe. Its not that hard to do that. You’ve got Olin Freakin Kreutz for sake, one of the best run blocking centers in the last 20 years. RUN BEHIND HIM

Personally, I thought it would have been better to kick the FG in that situation, rather than go for it.

can i quadruple “rec’d it”? kick the FG. bring the game back to 5. put some pressure on green bay the next drive knowing that if they don’t score the saints have a chance to go ahead with plenty of time left on the clock.

I just don't understand having all these RBs and not using them.

Has anyone noticed that PT, when healthy as he is now, almost NEVER loses yardage? I think he should get more carries. I like Ingram, but give him some time. Right now give the ball to PT. Plus, when PT is in the game, the defense has to play honest as he is a very good receiver and awesome on screen passes. That makes a defense play more cautious. Ingram apparently doesn’t figure into the passing game. Tips off the defense pretty obviously.

On the 3rd and 1 (before the 4th and 1) Ingram could have gotten the first down easily. All, he had to do is follow the
FB which is probably the way the play was designed- 2 feet laterally to the left he should have had success very easily. But, that’s what you are going to get with a rookie. That should have been PTs carry. PT deserves more resepect- he averahed 6 yards per carry and only got the ball 5 times.

Green Bay ran the ball 27 times, we ran it 21. If we had run the ball 27 times I think our chances of winning would go up. The 108 yd kickoff return killed us, we would have (probably) run the ball more if that didn’t happen. But I still think we should have run more especially to PT.

or...

Just switch a few (including the goalline run) from a bull**** “Up The Gut” run that you know isn’t going to do jack, to an outside run.

DUAL RBs

I think that you are correct that Ingram should have been in the backfield on the 4th and inches play. He would have forced the defense to expect the run up the middle play and given Drew time to execute whatever cute play SP had in mind. Sproles in the backfield tipped our hand that cute was in the works and that blitzing DB was the way to go.

On the other hand, the play at the end of the game would have been better if Sproles OR PT was in the backfield in addition to Ingram. Then the defense would have had to respect Sproles running around the end OR PT in a screen or run around the end OR Ingram running up the middle. In that case, they would have had to have LBs or DBs hang back in case we gave the ball either to Sproles or PT, not just sit there and wait for our play to Ingram. I’m no coach but I just can’t see why we didn’t at least fake a play other than Ingram up the middle (given that their defense had stuffed similar plays all night long).

Look at it a different way.

We all talk about Nicks and Evans like they are two of the top guards in the league. They are paid this way. Why the hell can’t they blow people off the ball on these short plays. When you have two phenomenal guards, you run behind them. I don’t care if everyone knows it is coming. They are paid to move the line of scrimmage and they consistently fail in these situations. They need to be called out as much as the play calling and the running backs are. Advice to O-Line: Sack up and do your job.

Good Point

Perhaps this was SP’s mindset.

You're putting down Nicks and Evans,

but to me they’re doing their jobs. If Olin would be quicker off the snap and push more quicker to the side he’s supposed to, he wouldn’t be blocking the path of our running back to find the hole. It’s hard to run through the hole when your own center is blocking it.

I agree with this.

With better execution, it would have been the right play call.
