Marques Colston Out 4 Weeks with Broken Collarbone

Jay Glazer of Fox Sports has just reported that Saints wide receiver Marques Colston will miss approximately 4 weeks of the season with a broken collarbone, which he suffered late in last night's loss to the Green Bay Packers. From Glazer's Twitter:

M Colston broke his collarbone and will be out approx 4 weeks! Tough loss

That's crappy news. Fortunately the Saints are deep at wide receiver. We know they can be successful without Colston but it sure helps to have him in the lineup.

Colston has always had to take those tough hits on passes caught over the middle and in traffic. Last night was certainly no different.

Arrington was in the game for a few snaps last night.

They’re just being careful with his knee. Last I heard, Moore should theoretically be ready to go next week. But if we lose someone else, I’m all good with putting FPK on IR.

Happy they kept Adrian Arrington

Now’s his time to shine. It’s now or never for him. Ever since we drafted him three years ago, people have been saying he has the same body type and size as Colston. I think the dream of having him and Colston on the field together at the same time is why Payton has held onto him this long. Can he step up and be a playmaker while Colston is out? He’s made some pretty impressive catches in spot duty and preseason games. Can’t wait to see if he can rise to the challenge.

If not, I hope Lance can return this week. With the extra time we have to prepare for the Bears, he probably will be ready. Devery and Meach need to step up too. Devery looked very good last night, but Meach was a little disappointing. Didn’t like the way he stood there and danced instead of picking up the 1st down on that one 2nd and long play.

We’ve survived without Colston before and we can do it again.

We won't be the only team that'll have to deal with injuries

I’m betting the lockout and the lack of access for players to team training facilities for several months will result in all teams having to deal with even more injuries this season. I expect to read about a lot of injuries after this weekend. Not saying I want to see anyone get hurt, just that it seems very likely.

The sky isn’t falling for us. Not worried.

Moss ain’t coming back to be a four week fill in but if WR is hit with another injury maybe. Though it wouldn’t shock me, besides if Moss caused trouble Saints could just cut him since his contract wouldn’t be guaranteed.

And the hits keep on rolling. I just hope it doesn’t nag him. I actually like our next few weeks so we shall see. I think Chicago will take a step back. I think we have a nice few weeks coming up before the filthy birds. We split Houston/Chicago and might lose one to Tampa. I will take 6-3 going into the Atlanta game. I would love 7-2 but we shall see.

BTW – It’s going to be 6 weeks before Colston plays again. He probably plays at home to Tampa before the Atlanta game. Keep Lance, Devrey, Sproles and Meach healthy and we will be okay.

by BASAINT on Sep 9, 2011 5:37 PM CDT reply actions

Wouldn't that depend on how bad the fracture is?

He stayed in the game after that play where his shoulder was hurt, so it doesn’t seem to be a very serious fracture.

Colston filled our #1 slot. Not Arrington, or Henderson or Moore. They all have their own routes. I want another #1 out there.

Moss in the very least, requires attention from the opposing defense. Moreso than Colston I think even. I’d be thrilled at this point…

not sure his career was over because of injury or..

for not being a serious pro.. he was a 2nd pick.. kinda the “diva” type.. had a drug suspension too.. he did attempt several come-backs..
literally the opposite to colston.. a blue collar guy.. only interested in being good..
really hoping, though that it was not a complete break and only a hairline.. it seems more likely.. since he got up right away even though he was favoring the shoulder..
if the bone breaks or is dislocated completely you go down in agony beyond belief.. even with the game on the line, it would be unbearable..

But the more I think about it, the more I like the idea. He doesn’t have to even learn our offense. Just let him run down the sideline on every play. He would be a great decoy at least. And we just love signing big name decoys down here.

he would run on the 1st play he’s in.. & raise his hand.. & if the ball don’t go his way, he’ll just trot the rest of the game.. he was already doing this 10 years ago.. why would he actually try now..?

Brees would be passing for over 6,000 yds instead of over 4,000.

GOOD!

I see you get my point. A stud WR takes us to another level offensively. Both running and passing.

by jray2000 on Sep 10, 2011 1:04 PM CDT up reply actions

I've been thinking that for a while...

but it would be hard to justify due to the holes in our defense. But could you imagine Brees throwing to Larry Fitz or C. or A. Johnson? Our offense would be unstoppable. We have too many holes on defense though to justify a high draft pick on a receiver…

by daisy117 on Sep 12, 2011 12:27 AM CDT up reply actions

I disagree with the justification

Look att he Colts. They went one dimensional (Addai for James).and created a defense that was predicated on having a lead….blitzing DE’s. its worked out for them. besides that i would think such a balls-out, attacking, turnover forcing, instant gratification OFF and DEF would turn saints practices into a 3 hour chest bup match between SP and GDUB while they both yell “WHO DAT!!!!!”

by jray2000 on Sep 12, 2011 1:08 PM CDT up reply actions

True,

But look at the Colts now, Manning gets injured and can’t play; the Colts likely won’t even make the playoffs without him. Same for us, if Drew went down with an injury (knock on wood) we would have a tough time making the playoffs.

Like stu said above, a broken collarbone is devastating. There’s no guarantee he can come back from it and be the same player he was. TO gives us a legitimate threat. He can run all the routes(not just the 9), and loves to block in the running game. I don’t see a downside. Here are his career stats. in 14 games with CINCINNATI last year, he had 72 catches for 983 yards and 9 touchdowns. No downside.
