The best road team in the NFL is...
...the Saints.
I know what you're thinking, "The Saints?!?"
Yes, as a matter of fact... The Saints are the best road team in the NFL.
Certain fans looking to make themselves feel better about a certain upcoming game are harping on the fact that, during this season, the Saints are 5-3 on the road.
In case you forgot, we lost...
- Week ONE to the other "best team in the NFL"
- Week SIX to the Bucs before their shutdown... the same week we lost our head coach in the first quarter
- Week EIGHT to the second worst team in the league... no excuses, it sucked... hard
So... We've only won 62.5% of our road games.
But, as any junior mathmatician will tell you, that's an extremely small sample size. So, let's expand that a little bit.
In the last three seasons, we've played 26 away games... 8 regular season games per season, one playoff game, and one Super Bowl.
We've won 18 of those 26 games - aka 18-6.
No team in those three seasons has a better road record!
And, we're TWO games ahead of second place... the Packers and the Steelers are tied for second.
Sample size still too small for ya?
Let's expand it to the last five seasons. Where do we rank then?
Third in the NFL on the road in the last five season. Yes, that's right... Third!
So, let's put all this junk to rest, shall we?

Boom
I thought about writing something similar to this thread. Just didn’t have the time.

18 out of 26 is 18-8, not 18-6. How do we stack up now? Tied with Packers and Steelers? I’ll take that.
But I’d like to put this “small sample size” meme to rest. The NFL season is 16 games long. That’s a small sample size in itself, but it’s all each team gets in a given year in order to determine the “best” teams—the ones that go to the playoffs. What happened in previous years doesn’t count at all, or San Francisco would still not be in the postseason.
5-3 is our record this year. It is what it is. And what it is, is a winning record.
"Sinn Féin, motherf*****s!"
5-3 is good enough for 4th in the league on the road.
I’ll take 4th out of 32 teams.
I'd rather not wait until I'm dead to figure out how to live.

sorry... here's the correction...
2011: 5-3 (regular season)
2010: 6-3 (regular season + Wild Card @ Seattle)
2009: 8-1 (regular season + Super Bowl… includes Week 17 @ Carolina where we rested most of our starters)
19-7 (incliding the Carolina loss in week 17 of 2009)
-
If you throw out the Super Bowl win (b/c there wasn’t a home field advantage against us) and the Carolina loss (b/c we had the #1 see and rested our starters), you get 18-8.
And how many of those host teams had won 81+% of their games going in?

HA!
Another good post. Yes, Saints can win on the road. But it is harder than at home. I think this will be a good game unless Frisco makes a couple of “rookie” mistakes that the Saints can pounce on (such as happened in the Detroit game with the interception and the defensive coverage screw-up).
