Standout 49ers defensive end Justin Smith has a healthy respect for the Saints offense. He says guards Carl Nicks and Jahri Evans are the toughest group he'll face all year. Smith says the Saints uniquely keep opponents guessing with play calls because of their underrated running game.

I don’t like that. Not one bit.
Vilma practiced some yesterday.
It’s the usual for Vilma…practice one day, rest the next.

Having the ball is better than not having the ball. And if you punt,
not only does it mean you don't have the ball anymore—
it means you didn't score, which sucks.

i keep hearing this
the Saints are weak outdoors, the Saints can’t score outdoors, etc. Then today I heard an ESPN radio analyst say something I hadn’t heard mentioned. He said the Saints are 12~4 in their last 16 outdoor games. If thats the case, the outlook for the niners this weekend just got even bleaker than before.
Hmmm...
I probably shouldn’t come on this. ;-)

Payton on Pierre Thomas: “He is a durable player”
That’s where I stopped reading.

"I will now attempt to exclude specific large amounts of TOP from the totals of winning teams, in order to prove that TOP doesn't contribute to winning." -Dr. Jeremy Arkes
Why? He had ONE major injury, and he’s had NO injury problems since OR BEFORE.
Every RB in the history of the league has gotten at least one serious injury in their career, or will before its over… or they don’t make a team in the first place.
Maybe he just didn't know there was more.
Every day I'm shufflin'!

Since when is lack of durability limited to major injuries? He missed games at both the collegiate and professional levels for a myriad of medical reasons. Calf muscle surgery, hamstring, cracked ribs, knee scope, high ankle sprain. This is the first season he’s managed to be active 16 games. I’m not sure what the hell you’re smoking with the “NO injury problems since OR BEFORE” bullsh**. He’s a decent player when healthy, but he’s been FAR from durable.

It was the wrong "d" word...
I would say Thomas is dependable… When he plays, Thomas seems to get those extra important yards after the hit and holds onto the ball. His style of running is like he’s off balance(wierd) then the defender straightens him up with a hit and he gets 2 to 5+ extra yards. I hope they let Moore suit up but only play if someone gets hurt. I think holding Moore out because Arrington is playing good is a good move to give Moore extra time for that hamstring.
Style?

I agree. Reminds me of Jackie Chan’s drunken monkey style.

That all goes back to his calf surgery at Illinois, according to his Wikipedia article anyway.
Pierre made his first collegiate start against Minnesota on October 25, 2003. He did not play much in the second half because of the leg that was banged up one week prior. On Monday after the Minnesota game, the "burning sensation" in his calf muscle continued and he needed to see a doctor. Turns out, Pierre had to go into immediate surgery to have part of his "left" calf muscle removed…because it was "dead muscle". The doctor said that he never seen anything like it before. The muscle removed supports the ankle when making a "cut" on the football field. Following a full recovery, Pierre would have to wear the "boot" for the next three years of his career, thus, changing his running style forever. Running with a "2 pound boot" slowed him down and took from his agility, turning Pierre into a more downhill slasher and adding to his already "forward fall."

Also part of the reason he didn’t get drafted and why Rashard Mendenhall started appearing on scouting radars.

and poor Rashard hasn't been very durable in the pros either

No, he hasn’t. Missed his entire rookie season, if I remember correctly. As did Mikel LeShoure. Someone needs to have a stern talk with the strength and conditioning coach at Illinois.

Pierre is very durable. The toughest running back I've seen this year. Taking all those constant hits by 5,6,7,8 or more guys each play and still breaks away for more yards. Very durable.
For several games Lance has played, he has been playing hurt. The thing is, he is still dynamic even playing hurt. If he plays this game, he will be hurt, but that won’t stop him from doing his thing.
Playing hurt isn’t indicative of durability. It’s indicative of dependability. The mere fact that he gets injured attests to his lack of durability. When Brian Westbrook was with the Eagles, he was constantly on the questionable or doubtful list. Often times a game day decision. From 2004-08, he missed 13 games, yet never more than 4 in a season, nothing “major” and never finished the season on IR. Super productive player throughout that stretch. That said, I don’t think there’s anyone who follows football who would considerable him “durable”.

Durable is Curtis Martin. Six straight 16 games seasons as a featured back. In Thomas, we’re talking about a player who’s been part of a RBBC since he entered the league and has still needed a rabbit’s foot and a prayer to average over 12 games per season active.
