Saints Lose Heartbreaker to 49ers 36-32, Season Over

Photo

Game over. Season over. Don't really have anything to say right now. Coulda won. Shoulda won. Didn't win. Can't expect to win, though, with 5 turnovers.

We'll talk all about it tomorrow. I'm going to a Mardi Gras party to drink all my sorrows away. This one was an emotional roller coaster.

Reminder: no cursing. I'm banning people like crazy.

Ugh.

I'm gonna have nightmares about those f'n turnovers

But the Niners did earn it in the fourth quarter. When Graham scored, I thought no way Alex Smith drives 87 yards. But they did.

Saints need a new defense or coordinator or something

I’ve been a Saints fan for over 30 years and had my share of disappointment, but this is hard to take. We’ve all been through the days of losing to the 49er’s back when Montana and Rice were making history, when we were in the NFC west. We had a great D back then, but a poor offense. Now it’s reversed, but it feels like the old days again – so much hope, but the curse of the road and the NFC west can’t be escaped! Why can the Saints not beat these inferior teams (Seattle, SF, Rams). This team has one of the best offenses ever! and yet they still lost because of it’s defense – the turnovers sucked, but they were able to overcome those. Alex Smith just beat the Saints and that is simply ridiculous. Get rid of Williams and find a coordinator that can come up with a plan that plays to the Defensive strengths. The 49ers could have played a high school kid at QB and had the same success. This loss should not be swept under the rug by the Saints management – something clearly needs to be done and big changes need to be made. The only thing keeping the Saints from being talked about in the same respect as New England and the Colts is there under performing D – it’s sad that a team with an offense this good can’t get to the Superbowl or even the NFC Championship game. Another wasted season!

Disgusting performance!!

Hold the Saints (#1 offense) to 32 points

That is nothing to be proud of when your QB is Alex Smith. Unless you’re playing a s*** defense like the Saints have. They made Alex Smith look like Y A Tittle.

Don’t say that. They went against Drew Brees. Sure 32 points but how many turnovers did they cause. How many sacks and how many hurries. They played pretty darn good. Don’t sound like the fan who has to figure out a way to make the loss look better just own up to it. The D won it for them by keeping the Saints from scoring earlier in the game and allowing it to be close enough for Alex to win.

I respectfully disagree. Alex Smith is a poor quarterback but a decent game manager. He has no business leading a game winning TD drive. He’s probably never done it 4 other times in his 7 years in the league. Until he got a load of the 2011 Saints D which made him look like freaking Norm Van Brocklin.

I would’ve done this on niners nation, but there’s a waiting period to join, so screw that…

great game. I will admit that you did some things on D I didn’t think possible. Your defensive secondary played great and was probably the difference in the game. I’d be lying if I didn’t say if we play that game 10 times we win more than our share, but what are you gonna do? You made the plays and we couldn’t overcome that first half. Props for a great game. Hope we meet again soon. Next time lets do it in the dome, away from all of that horrible sunshine and grass, ok?

The better team???

I disagree. On that day, yes – at home. Very evenly matched – one with a great offense and really bad D, the other with a great D and an average offense. I hate the 49ers because of past years in the same division and never beating them, so I am bitter. I do not think the 49ers have a better team. Put these 2 teams on a neutral site and the Saints win. That being said – congrats on winning, I know how it feels to win after not winning for so long.

The better team is the team that wins

The team that looses and claims otherwise is simply making excuses.

Now, on another day could it have turned out different, sure. But that is the nature of the game. However, this past Saturday SF simply was better. At least you lost to a higher seed, for whatever that is worth.

Thats who this game falls on. Changes the D calls up the last two drives and lets their only real deep threat have two free releases.

This game is more gut wrenching than last year.

Roman Harper..please dont come back next year.

Roman F. Harper rutinely gets beaten like a step child in pass coverage. Happened last year …cost us a playoff run….happened this year….cost us a legit super bowl shot. What is it going to take for this guy to be fired? Roman…you are NOT a D lineman…youre not even a linebacker! I dont care how many sacks you get! You are a SAFETY!! I’m not sure if you quite understand this…but that means you have to play in PASS coverage. Your job is to not go get beaten over the top over and over and over and over…should i continue??…and OVER again. Please do us all a favor and retire. Thanks. Drew….keep leading the best offense….of all time!! Maybe one day the deffense will get their act together again.

Yes, Jenkins..

Way to play. I don’t know how to fix whatever the problem is….Williams is a live by the sword, die by the sword type of coordinator and I think it’s easy for teams to gameplan around. He designs his schemes around turnovers and we just didn’t get any. I hope it gets fixed or we will never get back to the Superbowl. Really disappointed with the D…. for most of the year. It’s a good thing we have the best Offense ever, without it we would have bags on our heads again. But, I love the Saints and I look forward to next year.

I couldn't disagree more

This is not on Harper. He made plays today. He forced fumbles. And he wasn’t burned on that last TD by Davis.

I would put more blame on Williams for the play calls those last two drives, especially that last big play to Davis to set up the last TD. And Jenkins was on Davis on that play anyway.

Play more zone to prevent that big play.

But this is absolutely not on Harper.

I just dont want to see ppl start crucifying Harper for this loss

He made a ton of plays this game. Sometimes you gotta tip your hat to the other team.

Again, my problem is with the play calling. Leaving Jenkins one on one with a VERY athletic Davis, with no linebackers in the middle of the field to take away Davis’ inside leverage. From the overhead angle, you can see that play coming from a mile away.

My point is, this loss is not on Harper.

Forget the 5 turnovers. Saints led by Drew BREEESSS!!! clawed their way back on top and GDub gambled it all away. I’ll bet they have words and GDub calls Jeff Fisher to commiserate after drinking as much as Drew Kerr has and Fisher goes “Jesus, Greg are you drunk?”

I am ready to say “Goodbye” to Gregg Williams as well. I think his deficiencies have been masked by having such an awesome offense that makes teams one-dimensional when the Saints are way ahead. In a tight game like today’s, not too good. Especially on last 2 drives

Best thing I ‘ve heard all day.I’ ve been trying to get my friends to see how garbage Roman Harper plays in coverage.Everybody fans and all knew the forty niners game plan.Play good defense ,throw short passes, and use Vernon Davis.I knew it was coming just didn’t know when. Also Malcom Jenkins played really poor too.Its still a Gregg Williams mistake he never makes adjustments to match what the opponenets are trying to do.I sure hope we get together before Drew leaves in the future. The thought of Chase Daniels and this defense is scary. That could bring the aints back. The point of this all is after losing last year too a nfc west team again…just think the giants just beat the greenbay Packers.Giants would have been coming to the dome. How many superbowls would we have won.No way Giants beat us in the superdome. We messed up big time.Keep giving excuses for Greg and his band of safeties that bend but dont break.I’ve been hearing this crap all year ther’s no such thing.

SF isn’t known for having a high performance offense at all. It’s known for D. We needed to cover VD and Crabtree. That’s it. We couldn’t because of the way the game was called on defense and SF had a crushing defensive performance. Our D really hurt us, but I don’t know if it’s the coordinator or the players. Tough one.

I just have to wonder why Ellis was not running a total prevent on the last series. I understand that for the past few years it has been “well that is just how the Saints play.” I would rather trade Ellis and his “high pressure” defense for one that is solid. They will never have to be the best defense, just not the worst. It is one thing if they create ton of turnovers, but they don’t anymore. I hope they get a new coordinator.

Every blog has there share

To be honest, I was tempted to come here and talk smack due to a bunch of disrepect thrown our way prior to the game…but it’s just not in me. It’s fine to throw the smack before a game – that is just part of being a fan. But after the game, win-or-lose, stay classy!

We will hold some contempt over the 49ers for awhile, but soon enough we will realize that we didnt help our cause and lost to a really good team.

sigh, Like St Jenkins, first LSU and now my Saints, rough ending to this season. New hope next season as always. I like the way our D played. They were aggressive and it was working—maybe should have held back at the end, but the 9ers made the plays. Geaux Saints, draft well!

They will find the money for Brees Colston & Nicks believe me

Meachem will most likely be let go. But we have AA and Joseph Morgan (dude’s a burner) waiting to step up. I doubt they keep Franklin and Rogers. Greg Romeus will probably be the pass rusher we are looking for next season. Believe me the window isn’t closed at all. But we need a change on defense as far as coaching IMHO.

I wouldn’t be suprised if we use Ivory as a trade chip to move up in the draft. Maybe even PT (even though I really want him to stay) to get a true defensive playmaker.

but lets face it if we want a legit defensive playmaker we are going to have to sacrifice…..and it just might be Tusk. If we don’t luck up in the 2nd round of the draft or Greg Romeus doesn’t shake out…..what do we have. We stuck with Harper. Jenkins has regressed. TP is gone (although I think with a full OTAs and TC Johnny Patrick and Romeus will make some strides)

But I’m not sure it was enough… I’m in hell forever after a tough loss like that. Anyway, that was an absolutely fantastic game, and you guys are a great team. I’ve always been a fan of Drew Brees and the Saints – not like the Niners, of course, but I like you guys. In the superdome, I think you guys could beat any other team in the league, and it took an absolutely superhuman effort to beat you guys even on our own turf. As well, I’ve seen nothing but class from Saints fans. Great game, and see you guys in the playoffs (and the regular season I believe) next year.

Sharper got burned just as much as Harper last season

was no way he was gonna make an impact this season. BUT I think he should have been a DB coach for us. Jenkins was lost without Sharper;s guidance and you can tell. He started taking his cues from Harper and lost all of his ability to react and cover but became a big hitter instead.

Well, it’s not really Down Syndrome, it’s more like the bends from entering the atmosphere too quickly. You’ve seen it before.

This script has been written before

The Saints go into Candlestick as favorites, the Niners defense feels disrespected, and has 2 weeks to prepare. They were already an elite defense, and it really showed. Now they’ll either go to GB or host the G-men and probably have a big let-down. Oh well…

Congratulations to the 49ers, they earned this win every step of the way. They outplayed the Saints in all 3 phases and were the better team today. I wish we hadn’t lost PT on the first series, but that’s football. Good luck, just WAIT UNTIL NEXT YEAR!

Hmmm...
I probably shouldn’t come on this. ;-)

Shut up Drew Brees.

Drew Brees flat out is the MVP. People say how great a WR core we have. Really? Colston 7th round, Moore undrafted, Meach….ok fine 1st round, Henderson aka clank. Drew MAKES these guys great. Could you imagine what he would do with some top TOP talent? Andre Johnson, Larry Fitz, Megatron, AJ Green, Steve Smith, Moss in his prime type guys. It wouldn’t even be fair.

I just want a DC that is gonna understand the situations he's in.....

not rely on pressure all the time with these blitzing schemes. Don’t leave your DBs (who outside of Greer are very suspect) on an island all the time because you want show how many “exotic” blitzes you have. You don’t have the talent on the DL to do that so come up with coverage schemes and stop the run. Stop relying on the big hit and preach sound tackling. Stop relying on you offense to cover up you problems and TEACH YOUR PLAYERS HOW TO PLAY AN ALL AROUND DEFENSIVE GAME. Realize that when one of your players is consistently beat by the same play or skill player that he needs help. Stop playing your DBs 10 yds off their man when the opposing team only needs 3-5 yds to get a 1st/TD…….this defense has been broken for a long time but because our offense covers it up nothing has been done about it. This should show them that something finally needs to be done.

thats what I mean by teach all around defense

when you have a game like that where you drop INT’s the next practice those players are catching ball for 2-3 hours. Get back to basics……when I played BBall in high school if we had a game where we missed more than 5-10 free throws we shot free throws the 1 entire practice the next week. The next practice we spent the first half of practice shooting FTs then the second half installing the game plan…. and so on.

Saints need playmakers on defense

No interceptions by safeties this year…none…zero…nada

But I want to end on a positive not. Saints overcame a lot of adversity today..They played huge at crunch time. they could not make stops when they needed at the end. Last year I was angry after the Saints lost to Seattle…This year, I am just disappointed at how it ended.

Oh, and fire Greg Williams

We should have played conservative defense. Give them the short stuff and play for overtime at most. Too many mistakes happened by now. Time was ticking away. I can’t blame the players but every lost is a coach’s lost! (GW) Harper and Jenkins got burnt before. They need help. Brees, Sproles, Graham created miracles and the defense couldn’t cover 85yds in 98 secs. Brees M.V.P. We were the better team. We let one slip through our fingers! Who Dat forever strong!

Those last 2 TDs are Williams fault IMO

He left there only down the field threat in single coverage…..that a scheme issue and you just cant do that. After Jimmy caught that TD the defensive calls should have involved double to triple coverage on Davis the rest of the time

by MtnExile on Jan 14, 2012 8:58 PM CST up reply actions

It's not all on Williams...

D played well most of the day, but in that situation (last drive) after they had just marched down field, mostly on the back of Davis, there’s no way he should be covered like that. Who knows though? Maybe players screwed up coverage.

That ill advised blitz lost the game. It could have been lost on later plays, but those weren’t needed, that one was enough.

2-10-SF 33 (:40) (Shotgun) 11-Alex Smith pass deep left to 85-V.Davis to NO 20 for 47 yards (27-M.Jenkins). Caught at NO 45. 20-yds YAC

36 points to the 9ers....that says it all.

Not to disrespect the 9ers, but they don’t score that many points very often. You have to be getting beat on almost every play for them to score that many points. That is a D problem and we have a big one.

by meitze on Jan 15, 2012 12:41 PM CST up reply actions

To be fair, SF doesn't score that much because they usually don't have to

That is what most people don’t understand. SF plays to win based what works for them – getting the lead then eating up clock and controlling the game. They go high-percentage/low-risk on offense once in that situation beacuse their D is that good. BUT in the few times where we have had to put up points, we have.

Stats can be very misleading without proper context.

Ill admit. Ive been reading this blog all week. Read most of the comments. And from what I read I saw alot of cocky people pretty much guaranteeing a win. ( Although with your offense and winning streak I did not completely blame you for the confidence)

When I came on this blog again about a half hour ago I expected to read alot of excuse and nasty comments.

HOWEVER

I have never seen a group of people handle a lose with more class then you guys have right now. Especially one in that fashion. Very impressive. You guys should be proud of the way your represented yourself, your blog, team and city. You guys had a great team and will be dominate for years to come

The Saints are clearly a team that is hard to like because they display no sportsmanship. They are almost always a “pile it on” team, some might even call them a “bully team”. They put up a lot of record yards at the end of games when teams were basically laying down thinking that they wouldn’t throw or try to score meaningless points. Good luck next year!!

I, for one, refuse to apologize for the way this team played. I wouldn’t have had it any other way. If your team couldn’t stop us, tough.

The worst fumble

…was Pierre’s. For which I don’t blame him—he was asleep at the time. But without that hit we get at least 3 points, and Pierre plays the rest of the game—which may have changed everything.

I know you don't wanna hear it now...

But the Saints will be fine, dude. You’ve got an offense with literally ZERO holes [assuming you retain everyone in free agency]. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more complete offense. I’m assuming that means your draft/free agency plans will be mirrored towards the defense, which will just make you all the more dangerous next year. Hang in there, bud, I’m lookin’ forward to this GB-NO rivalry in the future.

I just came to tell you guys great game. Your offense was just as explosive as everyone said it was. Pretty depressed now. We really could’ve gone all the way this year. I don’t know, it just felt even better than 2009 did. Give it to our team, they overcame alot, I mean ALOT, to be able to get in position to win. Just sad to see our D, after handling it all night, lose composure and the game at the end. Tough, tough game. Can’t believe it’s real.

But what did it do for us this year if we weren’t up by twenty? A team like the Saints ought to be able to make a deep run every year. You can’t expect it every year, but clearly, if our offense struggles, our D will not take up any slack.

My thoughts...

Yea, giving up those turnovers at our end of the field did hurt.

But, the fact remains that the Saints had the lead with less than a minute to go, and was in perfect position to ice the game, in spite of all that.

It is ALL on the defense and Gregg Williams for once again not being able to make ONE SINGLE play, to not be able to defend simple crossing patterns, and for not being able to establsh a single pass rush with your basic front four linemen.

The offense, on the other hand, not only endured the initial blows, but at the end was simply unstoppable. They proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that they can play outside with the best defenses and overcome mistakes and turnovers. If they can keep the main elements intact through free agency, they will dominate defenses for the next 5 years.

The D, on the other hand, needs a complete and total overhaul, with a new DC. Gregg Williams can go to St. Louis with Jeff Fisher tomorrow for all I care…and he can take Jenkins, Harper, Smith, Shanle, and all those other no-tackling, no-pas-rushing, blindly-blitzing-a** players along with him. Bring on Jack del Rio, and clean house.

helmet to helmet only counts on a defenseless receiver (PT had made the catch, then turned and ran) or a QB (PT was not in the act of throwing).

Bobby Hebert had an interesting thing or two

on the over the shoulder catch by Davis, Malcolm didn’t look back, he’s looking at Davis’ face, when a receiver see’s the ball is close his eyes get big, thats when you turn and make a play, besides he was drafted as a CB, you can’t let a TE beat you on a Fade route. Wasn’t like he was beat by two strides.

Both. The game p*** ed me off, as does any game that gets so far out of whack offensively. Down by 6 with 10 minutes remaining and running an entire drive with an empty backfield is unacceptable. The first two turnovers were direct results of the defense keying on the pass. Early on, that should never be the case. Our defense bent but didn’t break also broke, as usual. I also think the picture of Matt Ryan was classless in a tongue-in-cheek way and find it amusing that a Falcons fan took a related jab on another site. If you can laugh at others, you should be able to laugh at yourself.

Said the same, Drew's first pick

came on a first down, long routes, need time, 7-0 at that point, try another run. That series with 3 straight passes empty backfield was early 3rd Q?. All downfield routes, I remember one slant to Devery he caught it for a first. Where was that all afternoon, that was man coverage I think. Drew gets flushed, has to adlib, not necessary at that juncture, a counter or draw, pitch wide, with IvorySproles. I also thought Ivory missed an opening, cut the wrong way at least twice. Why aren’t we in zone with 40 seconds left, on 3rd down, a simple crossing pattern to Davis, Jenkins didn’t play inside leverage and chased him all the way across the field. Thats Nuts I tell ya.

I’m not happy the lost, I simply assumed they would based on the match ups and Payton’s play calling tendencies the last two seasons. They’ve never been a successful team passing that often against legitimate competition. Never. Feel free to name one game, regular season or post season, they’ve won against (what would later prove to be) a playoff team, while passing in excess of 60% of the time. Paint a cape on him all you want, Brees isn’t Superman. He needs his supporting cast (including a running game) to “save the world”, just like any other QB in the league.

Not by much. Barring a 30:00/30:00 split, one team is guaranteed to “win” TOP. In this case, both teams had 16 offensive possessions. That’s pretty much the epitome of not minding the clock.

yeah it was tough going, but it might have been better

if they had kept giving “run looks” in personnel, while maybe throwing, or maybe running out of those looks – forcing it downfield in the first half was painful to watch as well…

and with the Niners, the whole Brees hanging on to the ball, and shifting around in the pocket to extend the play until someone gets open didn’t go so well

running an entire drive with an empty backfield is unacceptable

rotoworld.com:

Thomas’ absence made it nearly impossible for the Saints to run the ball against the 49ers’ top-ranked run defense, and called to mind their Wild Card loss to the Seahawks last season, where an injury-plagued backfield led by Julius Jones could get little going on the ground. It was the kind of the day the Saints thought they would be able to avoid when they made Mark Ingram a first-round pick.

by klaatu71 on Jan 15, 2012 10:29 AM CST up reply actions

a.) It’s fairly obvious who klaatu71 is. We’ve missed you, boo.
b.) Julius Jones had 15 carries by himself versus Seattle and scored 2 TDs. The entire team had 15 carries yesterday, along with more passing attempts.
c.) Ivory had runs of 5 and 8 yards long after being stuffed on a few occasions early. What’s worse, the run not working or the assumption that the run isn’t going to work? When you occasionally have success, I have to go with the latter.
d.) As stated many times before, the success of the running game itself isn’t the end all be all, in terms of importance of the running game. If we’re running “unsuccessfully”, we’re still keeping the opposing front seven on their heels, i.e., not bull rushing Brees. His interception came in the face of a blitz. The hit and fumble on Thomas came on a pass, when the defender had a bead on the receiver. There simply were no turnovers on the 15 rushing attempts from scrimmage.
e.) Not all “failed” runs equal zero or fewer yards. Most don’t. All incompletions equal zero yards. Some completions equal zero or fewer. Most don’t. In running, you remove the “guaranteed zero” incompletion factor. I’d rather face a 2nd and 9, than a 2nd and 10.

by klaatu71 on Jan 15, 2012 9:41 PM CST up reply actions

In my mind, “nearly impossible to run” = zero running backs. That’s when you have to rely on fake end arounds to Henderson, as Brees rolls out to set up short passes underneath. We still had Jones, Bush, Wynn and Evans against the Seahawks. We also could have activated Joique Bell. Yesterday, we still had Sproles, Ivory and Collins. It’s a BS excuse, just as it always is. It’s also exactly why I predicted the loss. They got shut down early and Payton foolishly abandoned it. Check out the play by play of the 49ers versus Cowboys, Ravens and Cardinals. All three of those teams got their running game shut down early. None of them abandoned the run to anywhere near the extent the Saints did yesterday. All three beat the 49ers. Just as the announcer mentioned, you don’t let the other team dictate what you do on offense. By calling pass nearly 82% of the time, Payton most certainly did. What game have the the Saints EVER won passing 82% of the time or higher? There have been numerous occasions when we’ve won games averaging 2.6 ypc or less and I would think every single one of them involved more than 14 rushing attempts.

On top of which, an empty backfield gives you one less blocker to pick up the blitz. Maybe Brees doesn’t throw that INT, if the defender isn’t in his face. Maybe he isn’t instructed to blitz at all, if there’s a chance of a draw.

I have no fear but I do have a lot of fury that I want to take out on some defensive guys. I think it is fair play, according to the rules, to put a serious hurting on a defensive guy, excuse me, to put a serious block on a defensive guy has he hits one of your players. Great game for two great fan bases

I really enjoyed talking with you all this week. If our teams played 10 times it’d probably be the same story each game and we’d both go 5-5. Your offense is awesome and carved up our defense better than anyone else this year. We’ll see you in the dome next year and many more times in the playoffs. You’re all a true class act and I wish you nothing but the best (except when you play us :p).

They don't play to injure if that's what you mean

They do try to rattle their opponents though and fly to the ball. Our safeties more than any other players on the D try their best to lay the wood on opponents. The PT hit was unfortunate. I don’t think Whitner meant to hit helmet first. I hope he’s okay.

Probably a concussion. He looked out of it. And we need Vincent Jackson desperately. I hope the Chargers-Saints pipeline rings true again this offseason. There were at least a couple of plays where Brees had ALL DAY to throw the ball and not one of our receivers could gain separation downfield. That doesn’t happen with an elite WR on the field. Either he’s getting open, or he’s drawing double teams, allowing others to.

Vincent Jackson or someone in his vein talent wise, that is. There’s not many available in UFA besides and we don’t have a first round pick to spend on that sort of luxury. Seems like a reasonable avenue. We also need to upgrade our OTs and of course OLBs. And a pure blocking FB would be nice. But that’s pretty much every offseason.

I’d like a player like the Claibourne kid from LSU, but we got no shot, a Jr.? or somebody of similar. A Safety that can catch a pass. P-Robb to safety? if Johnny Patrick can step up. I’m not sure who’s available. But a lot teams in the play-offs secondary’s have given up yds. A really whack stat.

Bushrod is mediocre. We’re obviously not going to land a franchise OT this offseason outside of a blockbuster trade and I don’t really see that happening. Not saying we don’t need one badly, just that our options are extremely limited without a 1st rounder and the UFA class upcoming. D’Brick + Michael Bennett in 2006 would have solved a lot of poop. We went the flashy route (Bush) and are still paying for that to some extent in a trickle down way.

That said, now would be the time to move Bushrod. I view a healthy Strief as roughly a lateral move and Bushrod’s stock will never be higher than it is right now. We’re not getting a first for him, though. Maybe a 3rd and a player. I’d be ok with that. The 3rd would replace him on the depth chart and the player may help out in another area. Same boat OT wise, but it beats dog paddling until our new Willie Roaf manifests himself.

You and I have discussed the Bush/D'Brick decision a couple times

and agreed, D’Brick was not a Pro-Bowler this year, looked bad at times played no better than Bushrod, at least this season. But the Jets 2011 O-Line was in shambles, injuries/people playing out of position. Looking at SEC OT’s for a start, of course. I trust Payloo will address.

FYI

Here are the regular season passing frequencies of the twelve playoff teams:

Lions – 65.166%
Saints – 60.567%
Giants – 58.900%
Packers – 58.289%
Patriots – 58.286%
Falcons – 56.734%
Steelers – 55.396%
Ravens – 54.237%
Bengals – 54.040%
49ers – 47.524%
Texans – 46.101%
Broncos – 44.000%

The highest all-time regular season passing frequency to win a Super Bowl remains the 2002 Buccaneers at 57.798%. Dan Kelly’s “guarantee” of a team over 60% winning in the next five years just moved one season closer to non-fruition. ;-) That said, there are three teams remaining that could still conceivably raise the bar ever so slightly.

Despite that, going in, the average of all twelve playoff teams was 54.937%. That average has since dropped to 53.890%.

Man I am really sad to see such an amazing season

go out like that. Props to the 49’ers, they played like hell today and deserved the win.

A few thoughts:

1. Everyone is complaining about the D which I get but honestly they are what kept the Saints in the game for most of the game. 5 turnovers and the score was STILL close. They shut the niners down all freaking day.

That being said obviously some changes need to be made, especially at safety. This bend but don’t break stuff has to go. I want a scary defense that I know without a doubt will come to play.

2. I don’t understand why Drew was still pushing to make those big throws up until the 4th quarter when offense finally started to find a rhythm WITH those short yardage throws. He didn’t have enough time in the pocket to keep attempting those throws and the short ones were working. If they would have kept with it from at least the 2nd quarter I think it would have been a different game.

3. Honestly I hope the Packers win tomorrow and the 49ers beat them so I have something to feel better about and don’t have to hear about how the Packers really are the better team.

4. Not looking forward to more talk about: Saints games on the road, Saints playoff games on the road, Saints games on grass, Saints games not in a dome, yada, yada, yada.

5. I hope Graham and PT are okay with those head injuries. Scary stuff.

6. Regardless of today I still think we are the best team in the league and I don’t give s*** if people like it or not.

Agreed, for the most part. They are who they are and you can’t expect much more out of them on defense. It’s time to upgrade a few areas on that side of the ball and work on becoming a more balanced, efficient team on offense, in order to assist that defensive cause even further. Passing for a bazillion yards got us just what it got Fouts and Marino. A fleeting statistic to beat our chests about for the next few years. Nothing more.

I mentioned this in another thread

but the bend but don’t break mentality says to me just do the bare minimum that you have to do to get by but not lose. That doesn’t match our offense or team mentality at all. Finish strong? That should include tackling.

by SarahT on Jan 15, 2012 4:04 AM CST up reply actions

Agreed. Take SF’s first offensive drive for example. We basically have them pinned against their own goal line following Pierre’s fumble. Unfortunate situation on offense, but no more so than the failed fourth and goal in the Super Bowl by Mike Bell, when he was wearing the wrong cleats. We’re also facing a much less potent QB/offense. In the Super Bowl, we forced a three and out in that situation, got he ball back around midfield and drove enough to kick a FG right before the half. That’s sound defense. That’s winning the battle of field position. Against the 49ers, Alex Smith manages to move the ball to right around mid field before punting. Andy Lee’s on of the best in the league and their coverage teams are outstanding, so now we’re pinned deep in our own territory. Well, low and behold, Brees throws a pick. They score and it snowballs from there, with all of the action happening deep in our territory. Now, obviously, the defense didn’t cause Brees to throw that pick or for Roby to fumble the kickoff, but if they don’t surrender those 50 some odd yards, maybe all of that is avoided in the form of a mid field three and out by the 49ers, a missed FG, etc. It was that “bending” that set everything else into motion, at least in terms of advantageous field position for the Niners in building their early 17-0 lead.

people need to make up their minds

on one hand people are saying we blitz too much and then others are saying we shouldn’t do bend, don’t break. You can’t be classified as a bend don’t break defense when you are the defense in the NFL that blitzes the most.
The two don’t go togther.

We have zero elite pass rushers on our DL. We have 2 choices, let opposing QBs have a scrimmage atmosphere where the QB wears a red vest and never gets touched and completes 75% of his passes because it so easy, or find a way to put pressure on the QB with a guy in a low numbered jersey. That’s not bend don’t break. That’s being aggressive.

each side has their minds made up, but one side of them is just incorrect

Despite 5 turnovers, despite 37 rushing yards, despite some head to head penalties that weren’t called, the Saints were still up 3 with less than a minute to go. The defense and Gregg Williams “lets send 8 and not cover Vernon Davis” lost this game. PERIOD. You don’t let Alex Smith (who doesn’t average 200 yards per game) score two touchdowns on you in the last 5 minutes. FAIL.

Despite 5 turnovers, despite 37 rushing yards, despite some head to head penalties that weren’t called, the Saints were still up 3 with less than a minute to go. The defense and Gregg Williams "lets send 8 and not cover Vernon Davis" lost this game. PERIOD.

They also kept us in the game for all the reasons you chose to label “despite”.

That’s true. But there was no need to continue to roll the dice at that point. Odds were against him. Yet he did it and now he gets to notice how historic St Louis ripped off its architectural design from New Orleans.

WE lost this game because of the lack of pass rush by the front four.

Those of you that don’t like the blitzes, well think of what it would be like just letting Alex Smith have all the time in the world to pass and pick apart our D. We have no elite pass rushers out of our whole DL. Not one. I don’t understand why Will Smith doesn’t get more criticism. He stinks. Cam Jordan was drafted and it was apparent he was a good DE without a pass rush. Charleston, McBride, Galette- all below average.

Our D played great until those last 2 drives. Go back and look at the game book and look at almost every drive except the last 2 and it says punt, punt, punt,fg, fumble punt- stuff like that. GW’s defensive scheme, inspite of our offense giving SF the ball 5 times, sometimes deep in our own territory, was working. Our defense had to work way too hard. What defense can keep a team in the game with 5 turnovers ? In the end, SF just made the plays against a tired defense. If we had a 4 man front that could get pressure on the QB, then Harper, Jenkins, Porter, PRob and Greer would look like one o0f the best defensive backfields in the league.

You replace Will Smith with Jared Allen, and Cameron Jordan with Trent Cole, our defense is on a whole diifferent level. That’s the 2011-2012 Saints biggest weakness and GW has been doing everything he could the last few years to cover it up. We came close- SF deserved this win.

with the season over i am sending out a little prayer to the footballing gods that the saints can somehow find a pass-rushing DE or LB this off-season.

of course, given we will be looking at the 60th pick in the 2012 nfl draft, it will be a minor miracle if we manage to find somebody late in the second round (ie there is a reason von miller and aldon smith get drafted inside the top ten).

alas therefore, it looks like we will have to rely on a free agent signing (oops, not going to happen – DE/LB who get sacks don’t grow on trees and are not easily acquired in free agency given teams aren’t silly enough to let them go) or somebody internal to the organization.

so it seems that we will be restricted to looking in-house. i have a little hope with greg romeus. seventh round pick, but before his injury the guy could flat out get to the QB at college level. I saw a draft projection of the first round of last year’s draft prior to the beginning of everybody’s senior season. of the top 32 in that projection, about 25 went in the first round. romeus was listed around 15th. so here’s hoping that he is fully healed and has some impact at the pro level.

outside of that the only other alternative might be somebody inside the organization flourishing in a new scheme. of course, that seems unlikely on two levels – 1 GW would have to be replaced (ok, maybe somewhat likely); 2 we would need to have somebody within the organization step up…..

any thoughts on this…anybody? bueller?

Would you trade those 5000 plus yards for a more balanced team and another shot at the SB

I’m hoping that will be the end result for the Ravens this year. I hate to say I’m glad to see you lose, but you were one team I hoped the Ravens would not meet if they make it to the SB.

Of course. And you’re on the money.

We don't get pressure on the opposing QB unless we're blitzing

Who’s to blame? Our D-line is garbage, Sedrick Ellis has been a huge disappointment, Will Smith is getting old, Cam Jordan is still young. Shaun Rogers and Aubrayo Franklin never lived up to their hype and definitely won’t be coming back.

My biggest interest is how do we keep this core intact? Gregg Williams is gone, Curtis Johnson is gone, who knows who else is gone. Dennis Allen was supposed to be Gregg’s predecessor, looks like he’s going to get a head coaching job somewhere. Steve Spagnuolo would be a better hire than Mike Nolan, imo. Look at Spags’ Dline in New York, one of the toughest (I know they have a much better personnel than us), but where do we go from here? We won’t be making any big splashes in free agency.

Re-signing Brees goes without saying, whether it’s franchising him or signing him longterm. Then Nicks and Colston, I’m not sure we’ll be able to sign all 3. Dunbar is priority too but Meachem :(, Porter, Franklin, Rogers are probably are gone.

What do you guys think?
