Giants beat the Packers. NFC Championship would have been in the Dome if the Saints had won. Probably would have beaten them, too. Un-f******-believable. I need to throw up. At least Drew Brees gave the Saints a chance. @But Aaron Rodgers still deserves the MVP.@

Yep....a win against either Tampa or St.Louis

and we would have beat SF by two TDs. Watch next season, especially if we get a decent DC.

what about our offensive pieces? were probably going to get drew brees under contract, but what about nicks, colston, meachem, i think evans too? and the one thing our defense needs is a pass rusher or a DT . our secondary i think is average but never gets that break where the dline crashes in the qb.

I beg to differ

We wouldn’t have beaten the Giants, even at home. We don’t have a Super Bowl defense and haven’t compensated for that fact with takeaways all season. We couldn’t stop Vernon Davis, yet we’re going to somehow magically stop Cruz, Nicks and Manningham? Home field advantage doesn’t mean THAT much. If it did, Green Bay would have won.

Don't agree, CP...

Giants D isn’t what SF’s was. They’ve been unable to stop us the last two times we’ve played. Maybe Eli scores 40, but we score 60 if necessary. No way Saints lose NFCCG at home to the Giants.

by RobertM320 on Jan 15, 2012 7:24 PM CST up reply actions

They’re playing much, much better right now than the last two times we’re played. We’ve also never scored 60 points versus a playoff caliber team, regardless of how poor their defense is.

not about being negative on the Saints.

I’m sick about the loss. It’s about a reality that sort of happened before our eyes. Giants are playing a whole lot better than they were when we played them during the reg. season. That’s all it is for me, not quiting on the Saints at all.

But everyone forgets the Saints have also been playing a lot better than when we played them earlier.

Going into the Niners game we had won 9 straight and scored over 40 points 4 consecutive weeks. What more do you expect. Yes, we had 5 turnovers yesterday. Guarantee that wouldn’t happen against the Giants in the Dome.

by RobertM320 on Jan 15, 2012 8:13 PM CST up reply actions

I just don't agee.

Not sure what you mean by “what do you expect” except the obvious: Hey, defense, “Make the stop!”

I’m not saying Saints weren’t contenders and they had a hell of a season, that showed an incredible offense. At the end of the day, that’s all we get except a division banner to hang.

And all I’m saying is I agree that we might not have won just because we had home field advantage and it’s because our weakness was exposed, again, in a playoff game. Need better defense.

It’s not my, or anyone else’s place to tell someone who they can and can’t root for. I don’t particularly like CP, myself, but it’s never been because his analysis is week, or he’s a bad fan. Your comment however, does seem like something a bad fan would say.

If CP is a true, loyal Saints fan who bleeds black and gold, I CHALLENENGE CP to prove something that will illustrate that now. Don’t brag about your season tickets or your Motel 6 reservations 2009. What do you have for real? When have you been positive, cheered your team on or given any credit to these players giving it all for their team? Otherwise his admission that he is just a “Saints rooter” speaks for itself. A pitiful admission of someone who really doesn’t support this team through thick and thin. Just goes on a blog and slams football players, great athlets, who make errors sometimes just like any professional athlete does.

If he bullies people on here, then they need to either grow thicker skin, or maybe do their homework and back their opinions up with ACCURATE stats and facts (TOP aside).

As far as proving his fanhood, you can’t know the things he does about the team and its history without having followed them closely. He and everyone else on here that is a fan of the team has EVERY right to question everything about the Saints organization, because we “bleed black and gold” and are as much a part of the success of this team as Brees or Payton.

by forrestgump52 on Jan 16, 2012 7:59 PM CST up reply actions

The Rams aren’t a playoff caliber team. And that was 7 weeks ago. They’re playing much better ball as of late on both sides of the ball. The Saints have been playing the same on both sides of the ball since. I think it would be a competitive game for 2 1/2 to 3 quarters, I just don’t think the Saints have shown enough consistency to put the clamps down on an playoff caliber offense that’s hitting on all cylinders (NY wasn’t midseason) and the Giants have clearly stepped up their game on D, if they’re limiting GB to 18 points fewer on the road, as compared to their first game, which was played even more recently.

It’s a fruitless argument. We failed to lock up a bye. We failed to beat a team that didn’t fail to lock up a bye. If that doesn’t prove we weren’t worthy of hosting a conference championship game, I don’t know what would.

I agree with this.

Absolutely. Our game and this Giants win shows it. Defense proved more important than how good your QB was/is.

I’m not throwing up. I’m thinking home field advantage might have helped, but the reality is, this defense wasn’t going to win any Championship and the offense, no matter how brilliant, wasn’t enough.

If we host the giants, I think we win that game. I think it might be closer than the last 2 times we crushed them, but I think we win. I think we’re better than either of the AFC teams. Game against Pats would’ve been an epic shootout, but i think we come out on top.

I'm pretty sure that 49ers defense didn't beat us yesterday

yes they have a very good defense and we handed them 17 points, but I have no doubt that if we hold them to a FG on that last drive, we score again in OT.

Here's the deal...

Can’t win championships being elite on one side and crap on the other. Elite on one side would require at least middle of the road on the other. Top tier offense needs average defense, top tier defense needs average offense. Can’t win with just defense, anymore, but offense isn’t all that is required, either. I doubt we’d have scored before they would’ve in OT, not the way their O and our D played in that last 3 minutes.

I guess I would argue that in the end, it was our defense failed.

Pretty sure we drove the field twice in the last 5 minutes to take the lead. If D holds once, we win.

Their defense played great for most of the game. Quite frankly so did ours. Our O made the plays to win the game, the D did not.

Even if it ends up being a 49ers vs. Ravens Super Bowl

I still think that “defense wins championships” is one of those TV pundit myths.
The previous 5 Super Bowls have featured 6 top 10 defenses (06 Bears, 07 Giants, 07 Patriots, 08 Steelers, 10 Packers, 10 Steelers) and 6 top 10 offenses (06 Colts, 07 Patriots, 08 Cardinals, 09 Saints, 09 Colts, 10 Packers). Teams with top 10 defenses won 3 times; teams with top 10 offenses won 3 times. (There is overlap because some teams have both top 10 offenses and defenses). Not exactly what I would call overwhelming evidence.
What it DOES indicate, though, is that you need playmakers on both sides of the ball to be able to win championships consistently.

Their defense caused those turnovers.

Like we did in ‘09. Well, not exactly in the same way, but they hunted the ball no matter who had it and it’s no accident that our rbs were fumbling when PT rarely fumbles. Last time was Tampa Bay for PT, but it’s not that common.

I think it wasn’t just an inept offense messing up, it was an offense that wasn’t quite prepared for SFs defense. And our defense, well, they couldn’t come up with the stop and that was no big surprise. The string ran out, just like it did in Seattle. Just can’t make that crucial stop on the most important game they played.

I think you're missing my point

They absolutely caused those turnovers and deserved them. Those turnovers absolutely put us in a hole that made it very difficult to win. The point is that the O did overcome them and put us in the lead (twice) in the final minutes and the D could’t hold.

So, Scott Norwood and the Bills are goats for blowing a tightly contested Super Bowl, but Roman Harper and the Saints deserve a hall pass for falling two games short of that stage? Granted, we were on the road, while Super Bowls are played on neutral fields. I still think the term “goats” enters the fray whenever you lose a game you were favored to win.

We don’t have a Super Bowl defense and haven’t compensated for that fact with takeaways all season

Agree. we didnt lose because of our offense, we lost because of our defense not being clucth in the 4rth quarter. a lot of ppl have been saying the defense kept it close, but realistically the 49ers offense is conservative and kicks fgs like the saints score touchdowns. and we lost because of our 2 special team turnovers. i must imagine this is how vikings fans must have felt after that nfc championship game (botched handoff, the PI flag in OT)

however, if we win against the 49ers and have to face the giants, id say we have a good shot at winning the SB

I disagree

It doesn’t feel that way in the wake of yesterday’s fiasco, but teams can win championships primarily with offense, as the Saints, Patriots and Colts have proven in recent Super Bowls. The problems arise when you stop respecting your opponent and completely abandon trying to improve the defensive side of the ball.

The Patriots haven’t won it all since they had a defense. The Saints had oodles of takeaways and the Colts played lights out defense down the stretch of the season/post-season they won it.

against their #1 D: 32 points and a bunch of yards despite the TO's and hole (not too bad)...

credit the 9ers for causing to’s, but the Saints were running right up the middle in the third on the vaunted defense even—should have done it more since we really had the off balanced then at kept the pass rush at bay.

since when did Cruz, Nicks and Manningham become elite?

Maybe Cruz for one season and I expect he will excell in the future and he may become like Miles austin who is – well – no one really knows. But, Eli is elite and so is Jason Pierre Paul and maybe Tuck when he is healthy, but Manningham and Nicks- they are not better than Moore, Henderson , Colston, or even Arrington. ask any Eagle.

Nicks is equivalent to Manningham- that next tier down

When refs stop calling all the touchy PIs and holdings, life becomes a lot easier when u have justin smith, aldon smith or j. tuck, pierre-paul, osi u. and u can drop back 7 defenders. pretty sure thats the only proven way of beating top notch qbs (07 superbowl, packs losses this year, our losses to the rams, niners).

in regards to CP

his comments are consistently anti-Saints players and he consistently is a bully, being intimidating to excellent loyal Sainst fans who buckle to him thinking his verbose and circuitous arguments make sense. How many potential posters has CSC lost becuase of his comments that are designed to stifle and repress. Otherwise his admission that he is just a "Saints rooter" speaks for itself. A pitiful admission of someone who really doesn’t support this team through thick and thin. Just goes on a blog and slams football players, great athlets, who make errors sometimes just like any professional athlete does.

LOL you’re so out there. Let’s break this post down:

Vincent Jackson has a better skills set than any ONE of our receivers. It doesn’t matter how many records we set. We didn’t win the Super Bowl. Brees is standing around in the pocket in excess of 4 seconds and not ONE receiver can gain downfield separation. If you don’t understand the difference an true difference maker at WR can make in an offense, I can’t help you.

Can LBs not be considered pass rushers?

I’ve been mildly critical of Colston when it’s warranted. Same goes for Nicks and Evans. Sproles had a great season. He’s a player I was elated they picked up. If he starts to fumble or run backwards regularly on punt returns, you can bet I’ll be critical of him, also.

The whole league doesn’t think Bushrod is awesome.

we did in 09 with the same receivers, so whether or not jackson is actually better or not doesn’t need to be considered since our receivers arent the problem.

obviously not every player is good.

what bothers me is when someone who never played football (you) slams players that are in the Pro Bowl, that contribute to Drew Brees and the Saints breaking HUGE records that are over40 years old, and set a tone for having a season that is almost (ok 2009) unprecendented and someone (you) disparages them as being inept. They are (they being our OL) elite and the rest of the USA and the NFL recognizes this but you don’t.

but I truly think that CP is not here to push the Saints forward or to have comraderie with the majority of us who want to cheer on the Saints, but also be in reality about where they stand. The negative comments I refer to above are by fans who want to rant, discuss, refute, or propose. But with CP, it’s different. It seems he just wants to drag down and degrade them. He has that right. I don’t have to agree- I don’t have to remain silent.

No, this needs to be said

someone needs to stand up for our Saints who came 40 seconds away from the NFC championship and had a great, record breaking season and were so close to going all the way but got defeated on the road by a team that played a tiny bit better and deserves all the credit. It shoudn’t be slam Roman Harper or Greg Williams or Sean Payton or The Saints. But there are some fans who just have no positive things to say about anyone who ever even played for this franchise and I don’t understand it.

you need to evaluate the rest of the NFL. If any of our linemen

went out on the free market- they would get scooped up. It’s not all Drew Brees. Faine. Goodwin, and others went away and were paid handsomely because they were good- not because they kbew Drew Brees. Goodwin is in the NFC Championship. But, I know, he ws only good because Brees touched his a**. Same would happen for Evans, Bushrod, Strief, etc. They are good. They pass block and run block.

I agree that Nicks outperformed Evans this season. Still an elite tandem, imo. Maybe not both deserving of their Pro Bowl nods, but it’s extremely rare that the most deserving make that cut. Andrew Whitworth had arguably the best season of any offensive lineman in the league and he isn’t in it.

see, again,

2 excellent guards make the pro bowl. A difficult accomplishment in that you can’t count their yardage, # sacks, # recpetions etc as a yardstick. . Clearly these guards have the respect of New Orleans Saints fans, but that’s a small market so clearly they got votes from other teams fans, coaches, players, etc. and you still need to suggest that maybe some were better.

Not to be mean, but I hope so.

It makes me feel better. It just makes it all like an epiphany: The best QB didn’t matter as much as having a corresponding defense. Superior on one side is not enough.

And get this: I don’t like Aaron Rodgers! I can’t stand the smirk after almost any and every completed pass and despise the discount double check/wrestler championship thing he does.

He’s probably a fine person. He’s a great QB but I wasn’t looking forward to him repeating. Nope.

It is a very disappointing end to the season but in reality the game should have probaly been closer to the Patriots/Tebows score instead. But Poop happens and there is always next year.

SF made the plays at the end that won the game. I didn’t think they could or would. They surprised me. But, they did and they deserved the victory. If we had scored quicker or slower, we might have won. But, they did what they did and credit to them. I don’t tihnk we lost the game, I think they won it.

Also regarding those turnovers

We have to give credit to the niners for those. They made creating turnovers a priority and that was the result. In 2009 something that pissed me off to no end was fans of other teams saying “we beat ourselves” when it was the Saints that forced the majority of those. Credit where it’s due – they did what we should have continued after our 2009 season.

by SarahT on Jan 16, 2012 12:02 AM CST reply actions

Im curious how harbaugh goes about practice...

Weather a Stanford or SF, his teams are tougher, and more disciplined. They don’t beat themselves and the defenders secured the tackle first and then the other guys tried to rip the ball out. He is a maniac in way also—I’m thinking those practices must be intense as hell.

and on their kickoffs, kicker placed them at or near the goal-line, leading to runbacks

and in the 1st Q, sun in their eyes

that was good strategy and execution by Niners

opening kickoff was deep, but Sproles usually runs them out unless his heels are on the backline, and sometimes even that doesn’t stop him (hyperbole alert: Sproles averaged mid-20 yards on KO returns, but our average starting field position for the season on his KO runbacks was in the high teens – GAAA!!) – and he took a knee – I was SHOCKED

Having the ball is better than not having the ball. And if you punt,
not only does it mean you don't have the ball anymore—
it means you didn't score, which sucks.
