Count Nolan and..

MAYBE Spagmania out. Nolan is now the d-cord for the Falcons. Spags interviewed for D-cord for Indy yesterday, they fire Jim Caldwell today.

Yup, the good names are starting to drop, and we lost one to a division rival. Already starting to get scary.

Personally

I am thinking that the Nolan hiring in Falcon-ville may prove to be more of a problem than a benefit in the short-term. That team is already struggling with it’s identity. They tried to switch to pass first by betting big on JJ. Now they bring in a 3-4 guy when they are set-up for a 4-3. I see disarray for a few years.

by Grumps on Jan 17, 2012 2:32 PM CST up reply actions

Not really.

They have some natural shuffling in personnel in FA this year that could make the transition a lot easier. They have a lot of good young talent on that side of the ball with Babs, Grimes, Spoon etc. They may need most of a year to transition…but I think it’ll be smooth. Remember Nolan walked in and implemented the 3-4 in Denver when they had been a 4-3 for years and they played lights out ball for the first half of the season. Same thing with what just happened in Houston. A good D Coord can make it work. And Nolan is good.

I am not disputing Nolan's effectiveness historically.

I just think that the impact would be less if they knew who they were on offense. Trying to determine “who they are” on both sides of the ball is going to be significantly more difficult (IMO).

I'm with Jeff on this one

Top 5 defense in 2012. The Falcons already play hard and intense…they’re just out of position too much. Nolan will fix that.

We’re in for rough weather.

Well we shall see I suppose...

Really depends on their roster issues and cap casualties etc. Nolan has a track record of success. But I am putting my betting money on a step back next year for the Falcons.

Why

Would anyone want to go to Indy. That place is in complete disarray. No coach, new management, total rebuilding mode. Glutton for punishment if he goes there.

Maybe he’s being offered the head coaching position instead of DC. It’s not like anyone else is likely to make him a head coach soon, so this may be his best chance.

Hiring a defensive coordinator before you hire a head coach is kinda strange. I think they’re probably interviewing him for head coach…in which case, he has only a very small chance at getting the gig. Maybe he’ll still be available.

Don’t do it, Spags!

No I think it was for DC

Caldwell interviewed him… and then got fired today… quite sneaky if it turns out that way…

Yes sir we want the ball...

by bondcrash on Jan 17, 2012 3:09 PM CST up reply actions

He interviewed yesterday for DC…which means he interviewed before the firing. It might be possible that Indy was so impressed with him they felt like they could fire Caldwell and offer him the job…who knows at this point. The sudden firing of Caldwell, however, I believe makes the DC interview pointless now if they don’t go that route. No head coach is going to want a DC hired that they had no say in…even one as well thought of as Spags.

Not eager to see an in-house promotion

Especially Vitt. His LBs have left much to be desired. And with the piss poor play of the D line, I wouldn’t be all too sad to see Johnson go elsewhere.

I think perhaps we're being a little too dramatic

Mike Nolan is a good coach, but it’s not like the falcons are turning into the 85 bears overnight. I expected the Falcons to get better at DC this offseason and they have.

We’re still planning on talking to Spags tomorrow, so we’re still in the race. But even if we don’t get him, there are other coaches in the world. I know we’re all on suicide watch after Saturday, but let’s just wait and reserve judgement until we hire someone.

I fail to see why that's so humorous. He's a proven coach who can win at the collegiate level at least. And in the NFL, nobody cares about trading a jersey for a tattoo. It's no different than any other collegiate hire...which in cases like Harbaugh

..can prove quite beneficial.

I wonder how many good college hires there are vs bad hires.

I only remember the bad ones (and there are many) and Harbaugh.
