Waaaaayyyyy too offensive heavy.

Also, I’d much rather see Sean Spence as our 2nd round pick. I don’t see us going WR then TE in 3 and 4, one of those HAS to be a DT. QB in the 7th makes sense, just because it’s Payloo.

I agree with you about it being offense heavy but I will say this

I watched that TE Ladarius Green from Louisiana-Lafayette play in the New Orleans Bowl and was drooling at the thought of him and Jimmy in a 2 TE set. The guy has good hands and he’s huge. Not as fast as Jimmy or as heavy but good lord the guys a beast from what I saw. Vertical leap is outrageous. If Saints take a chance I can see him being our version of Aaron Hernandez. Just like when teams try and shut Gronk down Hernandez just takes over Green can be that for us. But thats if PayLoo wants to take a chance on him. But I wouldn’t mind if he’s the only offensive player we pick in the draft.

I'm fine with taking one of them.

But we can’t wait until the 6th round to take a DT. It’s easily our second biggest hole, and it needs to get filled early.

Yeah I say that DT needs to be filled in the 2nd round no doubt

any suggestions on what DT would be a good look in the 2nd round?

Wrong.

OLB needs to be filled in the 2nd round. If we had a first, then OLB would be first, with DT second. Unfortunately, I haven’t really started looking at prospects this year, mainly because we don’t have a first, but Sean Spence seems to be a good selection in the 2nd

From WalterFootball
Getting off blocks could be an issue for Spence at the next level.

Frankly, that sounds like our entire defense. I know good coaching can help, but wouldn’t it be better to break into the Falcons’ office, steal their draft pick, and use it to take Zach Brown?

If you look at his highlight reel, he seems to shed blocks easily enough

That’s why they call it a “highlight” reel.

Good luck trying to find a second or third round prospect that doesn't have the words

“might have trouble shedding blocks” show up. It’s a favorite buzz phrase for later linebackers.

If you’re curious, currently players ranked between the middle of the second round to late third are Zach Brown, Lavonte David, Keenan Robinson, Brandon Lindsey, Bruce Irvin, Kenny Tate, Nigel Bradham and Sean Spence. Spence actually is currently graded out at late third. Keep in mind that obviously all grades will fluctuate greatly over the next 2 months.

It should be noted that every single one of these linebackers except for Lindsey are smaller linebackers between 215 -230…so every single one of them will come with the “trouble shedding blocks” label due to size.

Scouts inc, NFL.com draft boards, and one other I can't remember with a weird ass name.

I amalgamated them all. Most had Zach Brown as an early second…put him on the list cause there’s always chances of slippage, yada yada yada.

For what its worth. Mel (cough) Kiper's take on the top 5 DE

DEFENSIVE ENDS
Quinton Coples 6-6 275
Melvin Ingram 6-2 276
Andre Branch 6-5 265
Whitney Mercilus 6-4 265
Nick Perry 6-3 250

Analysis: Coples has the best frame to hold up as a 4-3 defensive end among the group. That certainly raises his stock, because there’s really a scarcity of those types in this draft class. Ingram, Branch and Mercilus could all convert to 3-4 outside linebacker. Ingram might be on the big side to do it, but it’s possible. Perry is a good pass-rusher and fits a 4-3, though he might not be an every-down guy.

Top 5 DT

DEFENSIVE TACKLES
Devon Still 6-5 310
Fletcher Cox 6-4 295
Michael Brockers 6-6 306
Dontari Poe 6-4 345
Jerel Worthy 6-3 305
Analysis: This is a solid class, but one lacking a surefire top-10 pick at this point. Still really raised his game. He, Brockers and Cox profile similarly, as 4-3 defensive tackles or even 3-4 defensive ends depending on what kind of looks a team is working with. Poe is that truly rare 3-4 nose tackle who can play over the center and occupy blockers in that system.

Top 5 OLB

OUTSIDE LINEBACKERS
Courtney Upshaw 6-2 232
Zach Brown 6-2 225
Lavonte David 6-1 225
Ronnell Lewis 6-2 240
Bruce Irvin 6-3 245
Analysis: Two different types at the top. Upshaw will be utilized as a pass-rusher in a 3-4, while Brown could go either way. It’s going to be really fascinating to see what some NFL team does with David. This is a guy who is going to come in undersized by NFL standards for linebackers, but he just makes a ton of plays. A defensive coordinator with some creativity is going to get a helluva player.

by HRP-SAINT on Jan 18, 2012 11:39 AM CST reply actions

Gotta love college height and weight disparities. Site I have has Upshaw listed as 270 lbs.

ILB

INSIDE LINEBACKERS
Luke Kuechly 6-3 225
Vontaze Burfict 6-3 245
Dont’a Hightower 6-4 260
Audie Cole 6-5 239
Mychal Kendricks 6-1 240
Analysis: A solid pairing at the top, both Kuechly and Burfict are well-known among evaluators and should crack the first round. Both have a ton of experience and will be able to step in, make calls and help teams immediately. I’m glad to see Hightower is back in this picture after he suffered a knee injury that kept him out of action in 2010.

Safety

SAFETIES
Mark Barron 6-2 210
Antonio Allen 6-2 202
Markelle Martin 6-1 198
Harrison Smith 6-2 214
Aaron Henry 6-1 210
Analysis: Among this group, Barron is the only one I have right now with a relatively safe first-round grade. Antonio Allen is a guy I was a little late on, but going through the tape on him I’ve come away extremely impressed. He’s a riser for me in recent weeks.

by HRP-SAINT on Jan 18, 2012 11:41 AM CST reply actions

I’m not sure if the Saints really think they need help at safety…it surely doesn’t seem like they think so. Of course, maybe with a new DC we won’t…who knows?

by BlackandGold4ever on Jan 18, 2012 12:04 PM CST up reply actions

Only one game breaker anyway in Mark Barron. The others are all third round and dropping fast. For some reason Safety hasn’t produced a heck of a lot of deep talent over the last several years.

Martez Wilson — Jonathan Vilma — Sean Spence

Would that be a workable linebacking corps, do you think? What I mean is: are we one piece away, or two? Or many?

What! shall we curse the planets of mishap
That plotted thus our glory's overthrow?

by MtnExile on Jan 18, 2012 12:09 PM CST reply actions

I think Wilson and Spence are both more suited for the weak side position. We’d need a little bigger guy who still has some speed to cover the TE’s…especially with the boom in the position lately. Guys like Davis, Gronk, Graham etc would just out muscle and eat a 220 LB for breakfast I would think.

Sadly…it’s time we start looking into a Vilma replacement too. He’s getting older and doesn’t have the range he sued to. Think we’re still 2 pieces away from having a good solid LB corps.

Wilson is 6-4, 250. That’s plenty big enough for strong-side. (That’s why I listed him first, because the tight end usually plays to the right of the offensive formation.)

I agree on Vilma, but if he didn’t have to run from sideline to sideline so much, he’d last longer.

by MtnExile on Jan 18, 2012 12:34 PM CST up reply actions

Huh, for some reason I thought he was about 225. I figured since he played safety before playing LB he was smaller than he is.

Guess What

I really like what Donte Hightower brings to the table at inside linebacker. Two hundred and sixty pounds.Strong and very intimidating. We need man crushers with good speed.I really hope we get Steve Spagnola(Defensive Coordinator) don’t really think I spelled that right. He stresses speed on defense.Something we definitely lack on defense. Not the only scenario but that was very horrible to let Alex Smith look like Cam Newton when he ran that touchdown in.Also short passes that I’m pretty sure people have seen a million times before….Lets see how many times have we seen the little dump off to the running backs, and there’s nobody for hours there to come up and make the tackle. Now Alex Smith is the new Dan Marino.Sports analyst think they know everything. They have been wrong about almost everything this year.Even in a lost I guess until we win a road game we stil can’t play on grass. We wasn’t even suppose to be able to score more than twenty points according to them. The whole world seems like they hate us.There’s always someting negative to say about the Saints or a way not to give us praise or some type of credit as being a elite team.I’ll say here we dont need them we’ll cut the world off and love our beloved Saints untill the end of time.We stayed around for forty three years and was still faithful.Aren’t we the best.We might have to win three more superbowls to get respect. We know they respect us just remember what Victor Cruz said before they go and beat the SanFrancisco 49ers.I’m s glad we are not playing in the dome but instead in Candlestick. It made me feel better.Like Drew said I love the Who Dats
