I wouldn't mind this

It would give us additional opportunity to prove we really should have been the #2 seed by beating them up AGAIN. (Assuming of course we pull it off the first time, but even in Candlestick we flat out should…)

A lot of west coast travel…and didn’t we play Green Bay away this year, maybe twice?

“This” year (though technically it’s already last year both in calendar and regular-season considerations) we played GB because of the divisional rotation. Next year we’ll play them because we both won our divisions.

In theory, they could play at us in 2013 were we both to end up with the same in-division rankings yet again.

Pre-pre-pre-preliminary prediction...

High-end we’re looking at 15-1.
Worst case scenario (not involving alien abductions) is 10-6.

Weak road schedule, as far as desirable points of interest go. The only worthwhile trip would be to San Francisco, with a five hour pit stop in Oakland for the game itself.

If the Packers win the Super Bowl this year

I wonder if they’d go with the same Saints at Packers opener next season. Great matchup, even if it isn’t a rematch of this year’s NFC Championship game. I just think the rest of the nation would be sick of seeing these two teams go at it. Especially if it IS a rematch of Jan 22nd.

It’s admirable to have blind faith. That doesn’t change the fact that they’ll have win at least one playoff game on an opponent’s home turf for the first time in franchise history, for that to occur.

Oh, it’s entirely possible. I’m just saying it’s not a given. Our track record under Payton against very good teams on the road isn’t anything to write home about. The potential matchup with San Francisco has all the makings of a dogfight. Of course, the first thing most people will say is that the 49ers didn’t play anyone in the NFC West. Trouble is, the same thing could be said last year and they didn’t finish 13-3. They’re vastly improved on both offense and defense. The Saints have regressed on defense, while getting better in the running game and are making better use of the TE. Otherwise, you’re looking at pretty much the same team that barely beat the 49ers in San Francisco in the 2nd game of the season last year. If it transpires, I don’t see that being a cakewalk game in the least. They’re going to have to at least attempt to mix it up against them on offense and we all know how easily Payton has abandoned the running game in the past. Do that against the 49ers on the road and you’re basically conceding their greatest strength. That leaves Aldon Smith free to pin his ears back. Not to mention our struggles against the run lately. If Stewart can knife through our front seven with relative ease, Gore should be able to come close to that level of success.

And that’s not even taking the game at hand into account. I don’t expect the Saints to lose at home, but you can’t rightly expect Brees to have a much more solid game than Matt Flynn just had and that game was nip and tuck throughout. The bottom line being that the playoffs are a whole new ball of wax and it’s fairly uncommon for there not to be at least one team in the Super Bowl that few predicted would make it. With any luck, that team will reign from the AFC, but you never know.

I know what you're saying about the run defense.

And even taking the 29-yarder out of the equation, we’re still talking about 6-plus YPC for Stewart. Not great (for us). On the other hand, that’s not really how GW built his defense. We’ve done a pretty good job against the run in the last half of the season, largely because we made the other guy abandon the run. No point running the ball when you’re 3 scores down in the fourth, and that’s when most running backs do their damage. We’ve beaten some decent teams doing that this season.

Will this be an uphill struggle if (when) we have to go on the road? Probably. But they’ve given us reason for optimism, I think.

This isn't about rules, it's about manners. Now there's no rule that says that I cant come over here and fart on your entree. But I don't do it. Why? Because it's not good manners.

by Doc Boudin on Jan 2, 2012 5:51 PM CST up reply actions

The inherent flaw in that ideology is that large leads aren’t always established. The Rams game is a prime example of that. Of course, they did virtually nothing to establish the run against the Rams. Hence, my point of not giving in to the temptation of forcing a shootout that will probably never see the light of day otherwise.

Honestly, I feel we beat ourselves pretty badly in that game.

The offense came out with no spark, and the D just didn’t come out. We got hit in the mouth early and never bothered to get up for the remainder of the game. They didn’t have to play all that much better to equal or better the level at which we were playing. We’ve played on a higher level pretty consistently since that game. Do you think that there is any way that team would have been on the field with us the way we’ve played for the last five to six games?

But you’re right. If we don’t come out and establish our offense early, we could be in for a long game, at home or away.

Nor in an entire game. The only higher pass-to-run ratio this season was against the Packers and the repercussions of that weren’t as apparent, because Green Bay was basically playing the same game, despite neither team having a commanding lead. The Rams didn’t emulate us. They stuck to what they do best. If we’re unable to gain scoring separation against the 49ers, I’m sure they’d remain just as disciplined. It takes a top flight QB for any OC to think they can stand there and trade aerial shots with Brees. The 49ers just have a game manager in Smith. I don’t think anyone is blind to that fact, including Greg Roman.

this saints offense is lights years away from the 2010 game at SF..

(hyperbole.. anyone..?)
but really, big difference in the overall production of the offense.. for several factors not just a couple of improved positions..
i would also say that the saints run defense has improved a lot within this year..
the couple of runs that got away from us sunday for example, for more a product of the threat that newton presents as a runner.. with the added wild-cat look they tried to confuse us with.. the one break-away run was a product of being hit with a trap draw on a defensive blitz.. a lot like the ivory play scorched them.. it happens..
i would expect the 7,000+ saints offense to bring a little weigh to the stick.. & we would be bringing a few more than 20 points..
smith will have to throw for 250-275 yards minimum, to beat brees..

A friend of mine and I were just talking about that yesterday. One move I’d like to see — and it seems like a real possibility — is Vincent Jackson. Odds are he’s friends with Sproles and he would no doubt start for the Saints opposite either Colston or Meachem. I think there’s a pretty good chance at least one of those two could walk, but even if both re-sign, Henderson peaked long ago and Arrington has yet to prove his worth as a regular in the rotation.

Trouble is, he’s probably higher on most teams’ radars than either Colston or Meachem, so I don’t know if he’ll still be around to serve as a counter move. If they want him, they may have to go after him strongly with the notion that he’s going to be Henderson’s replacement, then quickly attempt to convince Colston and/or Meachem of that. If they’re under the impression that they’re being replaced, then the odds of them walking become even greater. Not like the world ends either way, mind you. Jackson is better than either, in terms of an all around skills set. Bit of a miscontent, though I’m sure that would evaporate quickly in an offense like this.

On the other hand, we've drafted pretty well, receiver-wise,

and we’ve seen Moore go from undrafted to the verge of stardom, even if that’s Dancing with the Stars. I’m not entirely convinced we need to go out and get a big-name, money guy. I think SP’s system does a nice job of recognizing talent and elevating their games.

Stardom through utilization isn’t the same thing as stardom through raw talent. If a true game changer was involved in our receiving corps, they would stand out from the rest based on YAC. He would also open up the offense for everyone else involved. That’s basically the same argument used by Bush apologists for years. The difference being that Bush wasn’t a legitimate NFL receiver. He’s a hybrid player. We have enough hybrid backs as it is. What this offense could really use is a superstar to draw double teams. You’re kind of seeing that now in Graham, but that’s more on the interior, including OBL help. I’m talking about a presence on the edge that will help compensate for our iffy play at OT, by helping plays develop downfield quicker, so Brees doesn’t have to duck and dart to buy time for himself as often.

Agreed. I like Porter as a nickel, but he gets hurt a lot. Patrick is still a work in progress. Quddus seems like roughly the same player as Usama Young, which is pretty good, considering we didn’t have to spend a draft pick on him. Harper is a flat out liability in coverage and should probably be used situationally, in lieu of starting. Not sure if his salary merits such concessions in playing time, but that’s a debate for a different day.

He just played out a one season extension for $11M. I’m sure it will be less than that per season for a multi-year contract. That surely doesn’t exceed what Shockey + 2nd and 5th round pick make.

also same could go for Reggie Wayne. The Colts are looking to clean house, Reggie could end up a Texan, playing opposite Andre Johnson.

They could, but Jackson isn’t coming off anything close to a Top 5 WR season, so I seriously doubt they’ll be looking to make that investment.

He can bitch all he wants, but in doing so he violated the terms of the contract that he signed and agreed to play under. So no, he was not completely within his rights, and that’s why he was suspended for 3 games (in addition to the aforementioned 3 game drunken driving suspension). If he didn’t want the contract he had, he shouldn’t have signed it.

Of course it’s all right. He’s looking out for his own well being, weighed the pros and cons of holding out and decided it was worth the hit to push the issue. Considering they re-signed him to what he was after, they could have saved themselves a lot of headaches by not playing hardball in the first place.

Contracts aren’t guaranteed anyway. I’m talking about him as a possible replacement for Henderson. Henderson is under contract beyond this season. Bobby Hebert basically did the same thing, as far as the contract holdout goes. He sat out the entire 1990 season because Jim Finks didn’t want to play him, eventually re-signed and led the team to two more playoff appearances. That doesn’t make Hebert a bad guy. That just means he knew he was worth more to the team than what they were paying him and wanted to be compensated accordingly.

That’s an incredibly myopic view. If the Saints don’t intend to pay a player they decide to cut the remainder of his contract after they release him, they shouldn’t have extended him a contract offer in the first place.

They structure the contract so that the team has a way to legally void the contract if the want. Players don’t have that right. Is it fair? No, but he put his name on that dotted line. Guess he should have read it.

Also, they play the Saints twice, we don't.

Actually, the NFL usually gives all the teams in a division the same schedule (more or less). It helps with tiebreakers and whatnot.

Packers

Why can’t Green Bay come and play in NOLA? Two years in a row we have to play them on the road.

by crescendo2020 on Jan 3, 2012 1:30 AM CST reply actions

Different sides of the scheduling rotation. The rotation for playing an entire division (the entire NFC North in this case) has one rotation rule. The rotation for playing the NFC-N team in equal-place-division-result is a separate rotation. In 2011 we played the entire NFC North, which means we were due for playing @GB and @MIN (as opposed to 2008, the previous time we played the entire NFC-N, where we were at home vs GB, plus @CHI and @DET).

In 2010 we played the 2009 NFC-N team that finished in the same divisional ranking as we did the previous year (which happened to have been MIN) and we got to play them at home. This is why we were able to have the “NFCCG rematch” to open the season. But because 2011 gets skipped (different scheduling rotation) then the next time up we are due to play @ the same divisional ranking team… and that just happens to put us at @GB for two years in a row.

Great explanation.

I was just being whiny. I’ll admit it, Green Bay’s a tough one in Green Bay. I’m also annoyed that all the west coast teams travel to NO, because I live in Ca. so I don’t have a lot of opportunities to see them live.

I can already the 4 primetime games for 2012

1) Away vs. Atlanta Falcons (Monday night, possibly last game of the season)
2) Home vs. 49ers (NBC Primetime game; if we win the Super Bowl, bank on it to be the 2012 Opening Game)
3) Away vs. Green Bay Packers (NBC Sunday night game)
4) Away vs. Dallas Cowboys (I have a feeling it will be a NFL Network Thursday Night Game)

by Jee on Jan 3, 2012 12:26 PM CST reply actions

Actually Last Game of the Season will have to be an NBC game, IF the Saints/Falcons game decides the division

There will be a Primetime game vs. the Falcons, it’s been like that for the last 4 years

by Jee on Jan 3, 2012 12:28 PM CST up reply actions

I think we go 12-4 next year

Wins: Atlanta (away game); Carolina (home game); Tampa (both games); San Diego, Kansas City, Denver, Oakland, Philadelphia, Green Bay, San Francisco, Washington
Losses: Atlanta (at home); Carolina (on the road); NY Giants, Dallas

I think Atlanta takes a step back next year and Carolina surges. Thinking about it now, I think Carolina and us will be fighting for the division

by Jee on Jan 3, 2012 12:32 PM CST reply actions

Atlanta already took a step back this year (at least in luck and amount of help they got from the refs). Not sure how much further they can step back unless they either A) get a really crappy offensive coordinator, or B) suffer a huge wave of injuries.

I could easily see A happening. They have Bob Bratkowski as the QB coach and OC-in-waiting behind Mularkey. If Mularkey gets a HC job, they could easily promote Bob. The problem (for them, not us) is that Bob is a predictable idiot. Bengals fans didn’t call him Bratworst or Bratsuckski for nothing. He may get away with it in 2012 and maybe even 2013 but unless he makes MAJOR improvements by 2014-15 everybody who’s seen enough of their games will be able to predict the play from the players and formation with about 85+% accuracy.

B is completely unpredictable. They’re a bit due, they’ve had a few this year but nothing major, haven’t really had that since 2009. But it could easily be three more years before their next injury wave… or three more games… or anything in between. You just don’t know.

I could easily see Carolina improving if they can just find some healthy players. Two years in a row of massive injuries will result in some changes on that staff and roster. And frankly Tampa has plenty of talent, they just need qualified coordinators and coaches to motivate it, coach it, and use it properly on gameday.

Assuming Drew’s contract isn’t a full-offseason nightmare and we can at least keep two of our four most important other FAs (Nicks, Colston, Meachem, and probably Franklin), I doubt we’ll take THAT big a step backwards… but we could. Hosting the Super Bowl seems to almost be a curse on the team these last few years.

But if we are still at least good next year, then I could easily see a four-way dogfight next year.
