A little perspective, maybe
I thought I would try to add a little cheer to a very frustrating end to the season. It sucked, no doubt about it. And, let me tell you, there is nothing worse than sitting in a Patriots bar and being the only one around to be cheering (to the point I lost my voice for most of this week - I was louder than all of the opponents fans put together ;~)) for the Saints. I may have mentioned before that, even here (god help me), I found some cheer. The reason the Pats fans, two weeks in a row, were cheering for our opponent, was that the last team in the lists that they wanted to face was the Saints. Cheery thought #1.
More importantly, what struck me, was that, after years and years of never getting near the playoffs, we took a step and occasionally got into the playoffs over the last couple of decades or so. Now, though, we have consistently been playoff contenders for five years. I also believe, what I wished for the most happened this year. We put our stamp on the division. I don't think anyone relishes the thought of facing us. No, of course, that doesn't mean we will make it to the playoffs every year but I'd put our odds way above 50%. Cheery thought #2.
I am hoping like crazy that SpagNOLA is the last key ingredient. And, yes, it may be more hope than anything else. I promise you, you've never seen anybody with a better ability to look at the bright side, even at midnight on a cloudy, moonless night. Anyways, one of the things that I think was missing is something that Spaggs can bring, which is a little more of a team spirit on the defense. I don't know, maybe GW had this, to some extent, but it sounds like part of Spagg's signature. I like our players, I think we have some of the best around on defense. We have a not-to-be-ignored defense, already. Now, maybe we can take that step to utterly-feared defense. Cheery thought #3
Anyways, we are in a division that is becoming waaaay potent on offense, so a rock-hard defense that doesn't blow it at the oddest times, would certainly be a great help. I still cannot argue that GW was a terrible DC by any stretch of the imagination. We didn't have the best defense, for sure. But, if you look at opponents P.O.M.P., we weren't that bad. Certainly better than anyone in the division and better than all but three within the conference. Cheery thought #4.
So, though it would have been great to win the Superbowl, maybe (wow! is this a stretch! even for me!! but, I'll go there, anyways) it worked out best in that I would like to crush our opponents week in and week out on both offense and defense. Maybe Spaggs brings us that last little piece. Maybe just being premier in our division can be supplanted by premier within the conference and, often, owner of that nice shiny football. Final cheery thought.

Where you at?
I’m surrounded by Pats fans too! I make do with the Baseball Tavern in Boston…big LSU/Saints fan contingent there. Sometimes gets a little empty though, so Jerry Remy’s across the street is another option.
I'm up in Portland
There seem to be a few Saints fans around Boston. Some hang out on the Lagniappe thread quite often.
I'm surrounded by Panthers fans
…seeing as how I make the mistake of living in North Carolina. Their team sucked. Cheery thought #6.

Yeah, I remember that, ME.
That’s surely MUCH worse than Pats fans. But, NC is probably worth it. If I were still living there, I am sure I would be into college ball. I lived, for a short while in Raleigh and, with the three teams there, NC State, Wake Forest and UNC there, that’s got to be a kick. But, if I remember, you’re in Charlotte. Still, beautiful state.
I'm not in Charlotte
…I’m in Asheville, and it’s a sinkhole. I tell people to imagine Berkeley dropped onto the set of “Deliverance.”

I certainly feel that NC has the best southern accent of all.
I don’t know Asheville but I always like NC. Besides that awesome accent, they have ocean on one side (and a heck of a lot warmer that west coast ocean – or Maine for that matter), and mountains on the other.
Funny, the same day as the Lions game, they had Lobster bathing day, which is when all of the crazy people jump into the ocean up here at about freezing water temperature. They all come out quite red, just like a lobster.
What else do they have to do with their time?

By the way, Lobster up here is cheaper that steak
I can go get a lobster for about $3 a pound, right now. The bottom pretty much fell out in 2008.
Can you get Lobster Creole?

Bet I can make it...
If you will supply the Lobster.

I always liked Asheville.
But then, I never had to live there…
This isn't about rules, it's about manners. Now there's no rule that says that I cant come over here and fart on your entree. But I don't do it. Why? Because it's not good manners.

Right! Sorry, I thought Duke was one of those teams in the triangle but,
when I looked it up, that didn’t show up….Now, I’m confused. It’s only three teams, right? NC State, UNC, and …. Duke. Then, what I Wake Forest??!?! I realize it’s a city but I thought it was also one of the teams??!?!
So, Drew is from Duke, right?
Brees?

Wake Forest (the school) used to be in Wake Forest (the town)
Then one day they decide that Winston-Salem would be a better campus for them so they moved the school to Winston Salem. Now it could be that they just wanted to get away from the obnoxious UNC, State and Duke fans……. but I let you be the judge.
I live in a house divided: Wife is for UNC, 1 daughter is for Duke and I go for WF. At least none of us were dumb enough to root for NC State. I do believe that is a disownable offence in some parts of NC.

I swear, the Triangle just seems like the best place in the U.S. for college football. Such an intense
rivalry between three teams within spitting distance of each other is just waaay cool. Hmmmm, all three in the same house must be mind-boggling, though. I hope you don’t suffer too much!
Surrounded by Kittie fans, too
They can’t stand the Black & Gold here in the Triangle and I LOVE IT!!!

Hahahaha! That's gotta be fun.
I was in a Munich, once, with a Brit fan at the time of a World Cup between Germany and England. I thought we were gonna get lynched. I wasn’t paying as much attention as if it were my team, so probably noticed the crazed looks more than I would have, if it were the Saints…..you might want to look around next time….maybe not. ;~j
Few years ago....
I actually got threatened by a Kitties fan……..he was more drunk than me. So, I didn’t give it too much credence. But just the suggestion made me pretty angry! I yelled louder the rest of the game. If memory serves, we beat them 31-3!

Ahhh, football fans, rank right up there with soccer fans!
I about broke my wrist and did break my watch, pounding on the bar during the 9ers game. Still swollen, still hurts.
Greensboro, NC here...
…I really enjoyed the Pampers season. Hope to again for many years to come.
As for living in NC, while it isn’t perfect, it does have it’s advantages – chiefly, it isn’t Florida! (if NOLA had the climate & topography of NC, it WOULD be perfect IMO, by the way).
ME, I need to get back up to Asheville, soon. I’ll be in touch….

…at gunpoint, to live in FL again, the panhandle would certainly be my first choice (I actually lived in the Ft. Walton Beach area for a short time as a very young kid), followed by the southwest coast, Sarasota or south. Anywhere else, I’ll take the bullet first.

Yah, my mom lives right by Ft Walton. Really nice area though it's getting crowded.
What baffles me is why it tooks so long. I had always heard of Destin, where a lot of the people I knew used to go, so I figured it would be like overflowing with people. But, really, not until just lately.

Consider it a plan!
No idea when it’ll be yet – in the middle of having a house built right now – but I’m sure the missus & I will need some downtime when this insanity ends, and while she keeps lobbying for the coast, I’m more prone to the mountains…

…because the defense forced that safety. Still a cheery thought.
Cowboys fans
Tried to tell me last night they beat the 49ers so they are better than us. Funny because a niners fan jumped in to tell them they were out of thier minds.
That's pretty cool.
I wish it was so simple. We could skip all of those silly stats! A beats B, B beats C, therefore A is better than C. I wish!
You live in Dallas, so I’m wondering if your discussion was on-line or face-to-face?
Yeah and we beat the Bucs twice
when they won the Superbowl, so we were better than they were, right???
Of course we were ;)

They could win Restaurant at the end of the universe and we'd still be better than them.
Hate to still seem spitting mad, but the same for the 49er’s.
I would have pointed out the Saint record against the Cowboys since 2006.

By that logic, the ‘11 Saints would be one of the worst teams in the league, as they lost to the Rams and Bucs. There’s a lot of miserable teams that don’t have to say that this year.
Somebody once said the truest thing I’ve ever heard about Cowboys fans, which is that, to them, only one team has ever beaten the Cowboys: The Cowboys.
"The Colts were punching at it and grabbing for it, trying to get it out. But I didn't care if they broke all my fingers. There was absolutely no way in the world I was going to let go of that ball. That was our ball.''-Chris Reis

3. Can you make any argument you want somehow involving the Cowboys, inserting the Cowboys at every chance you get while ignoring every shred of fact or reasonable thoughts? So, this seems like a good forum for something I've been thinking about lately.
A lot of people (NC in particular) here are far away from home and, yet, are still Saints fans. And, while I think it is true of all fans of all teams that it is nearly impossible to change your stripes, it is really rather remarkable when you team was spectacular at losing for so long. Maybe we all had a certain pride in that accomplishment, who knows. Anyways, I’m just wondering how y’all coped with it. I was in a very interesting work evnvironment, in which, there were people in the office representing darned near every team in the NFL and, especially, East Coast teams. So, I was just wondering how everyone dealt with that in the bad years. I mean, honestly, I can’t say I ever found a whole lot to talk about concerning the Saints. Maybe that makes me a bandwagon fan but, really, what do you say? “My team loses more than your team! Nyah, nyah, nyah!” or “My team has a worse record than you team. Nyah, nyah, nyah!”
I mean, I love my Saints. And, funny thing is that, for the longest time, there was no way on Earth that I was going to root for any other team in the NFL. But, now, that they are doing so well and they are beyond being a respectable team, I don’t feel so bad when I occasionally root for some other team. Especially for the Pats, since they are the local team here in Maine and they are in the AFC. I mean, it sure would have been easy to root for them over the last couple of decades but I just could never find it in me until lately. I respected the team and their two stellar quarterbacks over the last couple of decades but, I just would have felt like a traitor rooting for them.
Being in an area and situation where the only team were an NFC South team would be totally different, for sure. I can’t imagine EVER rooting for the Bucs, Pants, or, of course, especially the Falcs. And, I, also, will never be able to root for the 9ers. This last game pretty much cemented that fact.
I’ve never thought about it before, but it is easier to be magnanimous with my support of other teams now that my beloved Saints have a ring. I especially have a soft spot for underdogs.
Of course, this doesn’t apply to othe NFC South rivals, nor the Cowboys. As far as San Fran goes, it’s funny that all those NFC West years when I despised them, they actually had a very likable coach and team. Now that they are having success that didn’t come at the Saint’s expense (until the last game) I find them hard to cheer for because they have such and unlikable coach and team. Go figure. I guess they’ll just have a permanent place on the can’t cheer for list next to the Cowboys and Bears.

Before this year, my favorite teams were, in order:
1) Saints
2) Bengals (gotta have one NFC team and one AFC team, and this keeps peace in the extended family…)
3) whomever was playing the Foulclowns
4) whomever was playing the Stoolers
Next year, this will be revised a bit.
1) Saints
2) Bengals
3) whomever is playing the Foulclowns
4) whomever is playing the FartyWhiners
5) whomever is playing the Stoolers
6) whomever is playing the Rams (probably)
7) whomever is playing the Punkthers (probably)
8) whomever is playing the Bumpkineers (probably)
9) whomever is playing the Ravens (John isn’t nearly as unlikeable as Jim, but he still makes the list)
6-8 may or may not be every-week situations, though.
In the situations when two teams on my hate list are playing each other, I usually hope for a tie and reluctantly pull for the team lower on this list. For example, when the Stoolers were hosting the Foulclowns a few years ago, I reluctantly pulled for the Stoolers.
That's some of the best nicknames I have ever run across!!!
I gotta say, you’ve found one of the best ways to find something useful in every game that I’ve ever run across. Hahaha!!! Mine’s a little simpler: root against NFC South, ex Saints! Well, and, now, the 9ers. Seriously, the 9ers.
Oh, and I will root for the Pats against anyone, now, except the Saints.
I like what you said about the 9ers. I couldn't ever really hate them before. Like you, I just had a ton of respect for
Walsh and Montana. But, now….I think the fans really started it when we were conversing with them. Let’s just say I wasn’t impressed.
Yeahboy, did I learn how to love the underdog??? I think so!
You may have misunderstood. I hated the 80s-90s 49ers. Montana, Walsh and Rice ruined my childhood. Looking back now, I can respect that team and understand why they were so popular and successful. It’s much easier now that the saints finally won a ring.

You're right. I did misinterpret.
I certainly agree with you about the current 9ers but I couldn’t help but respect the old team, even though they had me pulling my hair out. I guess, really, we were so bad back then that I really didn’t think of them as an obstable. The real obstacle was the funny looking pointy pigskin!
How I dealt with it
I had to put up with people watching for when I came in from around a corner and then when I got into the work room they would all have paper bags on their heads and laugh at me. I dealt with it by being able to tell mathmatically the exact point each season when the Saints were out of playoff contention. They would say “Better luck next year” and I would retort “Nope the Saints are still mathmatically alive”. Hey it was what I did to survive the lean years. Plus it gave me something to do. I can’t say that I miss the old days. Now I calculate when we have sewn up the division and playoff seedings. I like those calculations much better!
SP: "No, No, No. I said 'Let's all take it to the Vikes again' not' Let's all take 2 Vicoden!'"
Maybe it's just me but, this superbowl is just another example. It's a weird to be feeling copacetic about
the teams in the Superbowl. Almost like, “Well, that’s fine I respect both of those teams and, most importantly, it could have been us!”
Damn! But, that’s good feeling! And, I really do like the Giants and the Pats. Maybe because I feel we could smoke either one. ;~)
