What Up With Dat?: Offseason Transition Edition

Photo

Below are my answers to most of this weeks reader questions submitted Thursday. Special thanks to all those that participated. Feel free to continue the discussion on any of these topics in the comment section below.

Who is more expendable: Colston or Nicks? - Ben D.

Wow! This is a tough one. Glad I'm not the one who actually has to make the decision. I'd have to go with Colston, though. There are a lot of other good wide receivers behind him and the Saints passing game would probably go on without skipping a beat. But who would replace Carl Nicks if he left? Matt Tennant? The potential dropoff in talent is much more significant behind Nicks than it is behind Colston. And let's face it, Nicks is one of the best in the league at his position. I don't think you could say the same for Colston. In a perfect world, however, they'd both stay.

Star-divide

Why is there so much secrecy About the draft pick trade with Miami on the Bush deal. Both teams season is over. I just don't see the need for the secrecy. - Tim P.

I really don't know, it definitely is a bit peculiar. And I agree with you, it seems unnecessary. Perhaps it involves large amounts of Vicodin? Just kidding! I suppose we'll find out soon enough as the draft approaches.

What drink did you use to drown your sorrows on Saturday night? - David K.

Hate to disappoint but it was just good old Coors Light. I might have had a Firefly and water mixed in there at one point but, for the most part, just the Silver Bullet. I hadn't actually planned on drinking during the game but after the second turnover, I thought it might be wise.

When will I wake up from this hellish nightmare and wake up to find out the Saints didn't lose to the 49rs? - B. Robichaux
Will the pain ever go away? - Breesus Christ S.

I enjoyed this question so much I dedicated an entire post to answering it yesterday. Read my thoughts right here.

What are the changes/upgrades planned for the Super Dome prior to the super bowl next year? - Snow K.

I think most of the changes/upgrades to the Superdome itself are actually complete but I believe a few more upgrades will be made to Champions Square as part of Phase III, including the addition of shops and restaurants. From the Superdome's official website...

The Mercedes-Benz Superdome recently completed an $85 million renovation that completely modernized the facility...

...Champions Square recently completed Phase II construction.

What is the proper way....to pronounce our new DC's name? All i've ever heard...is Spag-nolo.....but if you look at the way it's spelled....I dare say we have a Fahv-ruh situation on our hands. - Jeff L. B.

Spagnolo is Italian for Spaniard. Somewhere in his family's past I assume a 'u' got added to the spelling of the name (Spagnuolo). If we really want to get technical, it should probably be pronounced: spa- nyo-lo. The 'gn' is pronounced the same as it is in the word gnocchi. If that doesn't help, think of the 'ny' in canyon.

What are the chances of a get together in NOLA for the draft? - Clayton C.

About as good as the chances of someone taking the reigns and organizing said get together. See where I'm going with this?

What would you most want Spags to do differently from GW? - Hans D.

I'd like to see a great pass rush. Everything we've read about Spags thus far says he has the ability to get a good rush out of just his front four guys, which is opposite of Gregg Williams' blitz-heavy approach. Personally, I don't care how they get it done I just want to see the defense do a better job of getting to the quarterback.

Agreed with Nicks over Colston

From the investment standpoint, it’s ideal to have some leverage (Nicks) to protect the primary investment (Brees). All we have to do look at the 2011 Eagles. The Eagles short-changed their entire OL in the hopes paying Vick and other players to have a Super Bowl-ish type season. That plan did not work according to expectations for the Eagles. The fact of the matter is that you need to be smart with your primary investment in this league.

Colston is a great WR, but we also can’t over look R. Meachem. The Saints need to obtain one or the other (hopefully Colston). Regardless, the WR that stick around will have over 1000 receiving yards and 10+ TDs because of Brees.

Nicks has the potential to be a Hall of Famer

…the best at his position for the foreseeable future. Colston, much as we love him, does not.

Colston isn't THAT replaceable

While it’s true that we’re deep in passing receivers, Colston’s vertical advantage is a key to keeping drives alive.

I do agree that Nicks is more necessary, our whole game plan depends on giving Brees time to find the open man.

I see Nicks getting a Jahri Evan’s type contract, Brees getting whatever he wants (structured in some creative way for cap purposes), hopefully to make him a Saint for life, and then, if there’s enough left over, perhaps using the franchise tag on Colston. But I would be surprised if they could pull all of that off, and pick up some LINEBACKERS and DEFENSIVE BACKS…whoops, was I shouting there?

Colston = boldin

A lot of his seam routes, over the middle catches dont look enjoyable, although jimmy graham can do a lot of that stuff (and also grab fade routes in the end zone) now. i think we still need colston or meachem as they have size over moore and henderson.

colston reminds me a little of anquan boldin, not a typical superstar #1 receiver , but does a lot of the dirty work underneath and really a nice security blanket for brees when he was in trouble

by forrestgump52 on Jan 23, 2012 3:26 PM CST up reply actions

There's no way they franchise Colston imo

Although he’s very good, he’s not a top-15 WR and they’re not going to pay him that kind of money, especially with so many others to pay this year and in the years to come.

Regardless of whether Colston and/or Meachem walk, we need to go out and get some young talent at the WR position. Henderson isn’t getting any younger, Moore is injury prone and Colston has had multiple knee surgeries. Time for some fresh blood.

I can see them not tagging Colston too

In fact, that’s what I think will actually happen, since there won’t be that much left after the settle up with #9 and his guard. But I do think he’s a top 15 WR, and he’s going to get those kinds of offers.

Yeah, it's a bummer

Especially since the Saints ‘discovered’ Colston. Fact of the matter is, though, that our offense is fine without him. When we mess with the O-Line, though…well, we all remember the beginning of this season.

by sammasaaron on Jan 23, 2012 4:36 PM CST up reply actions

crazy talk

It’s Colston or Meacham. I’ll take #12 no doubt.

Brees isn’t going to leave his own contract out there and take a chance on losing The Quiet Storm.

Go back to the game at Atlanta for a reminder on how valuable Colston is for the offense. I’m sure someone can look up how many 3rd downs he converted that game and this year overall.

Henderson’s contract isn’t up. And it’s not necessarily Meachem over Colston, it’s cap space. Colston will get way more money than he’s worth on the open market, simply because there will be SO many teams looking for a number 1 receiver. Cap priority has to go to Brees and Nicks, and Colston probably gets left as the odd man out. I would love for him not to be- a gold #12 was the first jersey I ever got. It’s unfortunate, but s*** happens.

He’s probably going to use Stu’s old cop-out that if he agrees with himself he’s not going to list himself. Then when he turns out to be at least partly wrong in some fashion (maybe Colston goes to one of 31 other possibilities, or maybe Jackson does), he won’t ever have it recorded on his history of being wrong.

the big changes to the dome for next year

they will have micro’s stations for all the vendors and will actually accept credit cards for probably just about everything… also smartphone owners will be able to download an app which will allow fans to order food and drinks and have them delivered to their seats. and those of you with AT&T cell phones will notice that the coverage is 100x better than before. these changes will also eventually be installed at the arena and tiger stadium.

Hey Dave...

To answer my own question, I totally agree that Nicks has to take precedence over Colston, but I would like to get both done, and if Brees wants the team to stay strong, he should be willing to create some bucks for the team to spend. Other than Nicks, Colston and Brees, I think everyone else is replaceable. I like Meacham, but if the Giants can find Victor Cruz, I would like to think we can pick up another receiver to replace Meacham, who tailed off as the season went on anyway.

We need help on the D-Line in the worst way. Watching the 49ers and Giants play rubbed that salt in my still-open wound

Swapping 6rd. picks

I heard on WWL Radio this afternoon that the Saints and Dolphins will swap their 6 round picks in this year’s draft for Reggie Bush. This means we will get a lower pick in that round. That and the Safety is the deal. No wonder this was a secret.

by Big D. on Jan 23, 2012 6:35 PM CST reply actions

Pics or it didn't happen.

Honestly though, it’s not much more than we could have expected. Amaya was solid on ST, and nobody knows what’s happening with Harper now that GDub is gone. Moving up in the 6th round, that’s just an added bonus. Although, I’m pretty sure it was a conditional pick, and Reggie had his best year as a pro, so I feel like that pick will be upgraded, even by just a round.

Nicks has to stay. They should do everything they can to keep Colston

Meachem- although I love Meachem, he is expendable in that he only averages about 3 passes per game. We should be able to get that out of Adrian Arrington, Joe Morgan, or by throwing towards any of our other receivers a little more. I expect we will run more next year (I must be crazy) since we set every passing record and didn’t get to the NFC Championship. So, I think we run more and focus on defense.’

Since the SB is in New Orleans next year, I hope Benson and Payloo do everything they can to keep these guys together 1 more year- get home field advantage and play those extra 3-4 games in the dome. That should pay for the salaries?

That would be lovely. Especially if the WRs are improved upon. “What you do best” is always the best fall back crutch. It’s improving upon what you DON’T do best that turns good teams into dynasties.

Except I’m not sure Meachem is tough enough to go over the middle consistently.

I’d rather get another top-end TE instead.

by FriarBob on Jan 25, 2012 9:12 AM CST up reply actions

Well, you would need another WR regardless, if Colston leaves. Maybe Joe Morgan’s that guy and everyone shifts up a spot. In that case, another top TE may be a viable option. If it’s someone like Vincent Jackson, I doubt they’re going to be looking to do much else there. Although, I do agree that they could use another TE, especially with D. Thomas’s career possibly up in the air due to multiple concussions. I’d still like to see them upgrade at FB, also. One guy that may factor in at both positions is Brad Smelley. He’s one of those H-back types, like James Casey of the Texans. Not the ideal blocker, but can be used in that capacity, much like D. Thomas has been at times in the past. I think they’re projecting him as more of a TE in the pros, but it’s not like you forget what you already know. He also should have some decent chemistry established with Ingram from their days in Tuscaloosa. Shawn Asiata of Utah is supposedly the best pure lead blocking FB available, at least through the draft. I’d actually rather go that route there, as we have a terrible track record with other teams’ leftovers at that position. Even the really good ones we’ve managed to land (Vonta Leach) have been turned loose prematurely.
