What Up With Dat?: Submit Your Questions
Welcome in to another spectacular edition of our weekly "What Up With Dat" mailbag series, where you guys submit questions and I answer them. Why? Because my opinion is more important than yours and you're dying to know my thoughts on everything Saints related. That's why. Glad we could get that out of the way.
So if you've got a burning question you've been dying to know my answer to, send an email to blogandgold@yahoo.com, send me a tweet @csctweet, post on our wall at Canal Street Chronicles Facebook page or just ask me in the comment section below. They can be about the Saints, the NFL, the blog or even personal. Don't forget to leave your first name and last initial so we can give you credit for your question if we wind up using it. I will round up the best questions and answer them in a timely fashion in a second follow-up post.

Do you think we will be active in free agency? Who do you think that we could fint into our plans as far as salary cap is concerned if we do? I’d love to see if we could somehow snag Calais Campbell, but I’m thinking that may be a pipe dream.

What do you do after a loss? Home games and away games.
I guess I can go anywhere I want. If only I knew where to go-Layne Staley
Best road game of 2012 to go see in person is where? And will this year’s Super Bowl be as painful to watch as the Bears-Colts was in 2007?
"Saints fans should be sending Paul Tagliabue primo Hollywood quality hookers monthly for the remainder of his life"---Andrew Juge
Since the Colts got revenge for us, much like Eli did just this last week, I rather enjoyed the 07 Super Bowl. The notion of the Saints making it to the Super Bowl just seemed so much like a lark, to me anyway, back then. Now I’ve come to expect it!
"Move over Marino, there's a new Brees coming through town!"-Jim Henderson
I couldn’t watch the NFCCG until the very end. Once it was late in the 4th quarter I just had to know if the fartywhiners would lose, but I could barely stand to watch at all.
Now that the Giants got revenge for us, I can manage to watch the Super Bowl after all. Last time I cheered for the Giants because I didn’t want “Bellicheat” to get away with giving a giant middle finger salute to the entire NFL after he got caught cheating. This time, I don’t really care who wins, but I suppose I’d prefer the Patriots, since we did beat the Giants during the season.
Who are you pulling for in the Super Bowl?
Me? Patriots, all the way. The Giants are like vultures, circling around waiting for the big powers to stumble; then they swoop in. I don’t want to see a 9-7 team snatch the Super Bowl in what should have been our year!
Just put me down as Mountain E.

I'm an Eli guy, not a Brady guy. Plus, the Giants deserve so much credit for overcoming tons of injuries.
but, the biggest reason is that the Giants winning will make Eagles fans suicidal. Gotta love that.

Got Talent
On your 1st “Got Talent” poll, can you help explain the 20% no answers? I understand undecided and even neutral, but I don’t understand no without explaining in the comments. I have my own thoughts, but would like to hear yours.
20% of the voters thought that was the abbreviation for new orleans.
or, maybe those people followed the instructions and provided only constructive/positive criticism?
or, maybe it was the poll version of reply fail?
Personally, I don’t think we should be voting in polls, because that’s “Politics in General” and therefore banned.
How can he possibly explain what other people answered? I answered no….and I explained why. Was a good initial effort…but it seemed obvious to me that the person was just throwing things at a dart board to see what stuck with some of the off the wall comparisons. It did not seem very indepth at all…which is what I’d prefer to read. Hence I voted no.
-Lombardi was wrong...it's the internet, not fatigue that makes cowards of us all. But then again, what do you expect. Not like the guy could see the future.
I read and understood your comment, but 1 person does not represent 20%. We differ in opinion of what is expected or liked here. I’m fairly certain that Loomis or Payton do not submit posts on this site, so direct input turns into speculation and opinion, no matter how strongly the poster insists otherwise. IMO, without direct knowledge of Payloo’s thought process, you have to throw a few darts to generate discussion. Again, that’s just my opinion…..
You’re right ….I don’t represent 20%…yet somehow you think Dave does and can answer your question? And I’m not asking for people to give Loomis a call and ask for insight…but there’s a difference between actually digging up some information and giving a truly educated analysis and simply shooting from the hip without apparently giving what you’re writing a second thought.
-Lombardi was wrong...it's the internet, not fatigue that makes cowards of us all. But then again, what do you expect. Not like the guy could see the future.

Dave , do you think it will matter much to Brees, Payloo, Benson, Colston, Nicks and possibly Meachem
that this is our year- one of the very few times a team is faced with an upcoming season with such a potentially talented team, that could play EVERY PLAYOFF game at home? Every one. Could happen. Do you think that Brees etal might be just a little more cooperative on the negotiating in an effort to make it happen? After all, is there really that much difference between 12 mil/year and 15 mil/year?
The way I look at it, Brees has so much leeway to make this next season happen. And he definitely deserves 15/mil , 18/ mil/ 20 mil – whatever. He deserves it. But, he also has much ability to make something very special happen too. And, he will make plenty of cash his entire life- he’s no dummy, he’s no slouch. But, wouldn’t 12 mil/year and 2 Super Bowl rings and HOF status be better than 1 ring and 15 mil?

Should the Saints bundle some draft picks,
And or trade a current player in order to get back into the 1st round so they can get a QUALITY linebacker, DE, or DT.?….-Tim P.
Depends
…on who they re-sign among our own free agents, and who they might be able to sign on the free agent market. That’s going to determine who we might target in the draft, and when.
And if anyone even suggests that maybe Pierre Thomas is the person to trade, I’ll have Dave hunt you down and kill you with a spoon. Dave, that goes for you, too.
What! shall we curse the planets of mishap
That plotted thus our glory's overthrow?
Dave
With our lack of a 1st rd draft pick and salary cap issues, is it possible for us to be a more complete team (obviously referring mostly to defense) next season that we were last?
Do you think they will make 1 or 2 big/smart moves on defense in free agency to build a pass rush and strengthen at linebacker and in the secondary?
Also, i’m hoping that Spagnuolo’s whole method and discipline will improve the defense fundamentally (tackling, intercepting, etc).
Will that be as big a factor as who he brings in and who they cut?
Ok i was driving through NOLA today
And on sports radio they were talking about going after Mario Williams
They mentioned that we should just let Nicks walk and use the money going after Williams
I disagree he has been hurt the last 2 seasons only playing 5 games this year and we need Nicks to keep Brees safe
What do you think

Although losing Meachem’s salary and resigning Colston wouldn’t help a lot if cutting player salaries was the desired outcome.

here are some real numbers about the cap, the tags and all that..
http://footballoutsiders.com/under-cap/2012/under-cap-2012-tag-projection
i don’t see how we lose any of the 3 “danger” guys..
we just won’t have any money to sign nothing else.. so..
contradicting my prior thoughts.. & going right along with cajun-c.. trade down everything on the draft.. & secure higher picks for next year..
do what we can with the remaining FA class & pray for the best turn-around on defense with very marginal if any acquisitions.. (more than likely we will have subtractions.. such as porter)

Mario ain't worth 21 million, I believe that's what it will cost the Texans, & coming off surgery,
Pectoral muscle, I think, W. Phillips put in the 3-4, he’s was playing upright, OLB, then gets hurt, he needs a 4-3, but he’s had 1 really good yr, he gets double teamed a lot, the nagging injuries he plays thru. But it’s a risk , imo. I’ll say this, I don’t think the guy’s had a quality D-Coord til this yr. but he wasn’t a factor. Antonio Smith is the disruptor we need, he’s played better, but I think he’s under contract, him or someone like him.

Dave,
1. Do you believe that G.W. knew that he would no longer be D.C. of the Saints before our defeat by the niners?
You can call it sour grapes or whatever, but damn, it looked to me (and a lot of other Who Dats) that that whole debaucle of the last 4 minutes of the defence’s failure should be placed squarly up his………………..never mind, just answer the question and pay no mind to my rantings.

OK, given that nobody (even me) fully understands the cap
Let’s assume that Mickey is the cap genius he appears to be and can find a way to structure contracts for Drew, Nicks, Colston, at least 5 other impending-free-agent minor-players we want to retain, and three free agents of B+/A- quality, at least two of whom are to help the defense.
To grade players, please remember that I’m considering a C- or D player somebody who can only get a job by taking a massive pay-cut or playing for a franchise that makes the Bungles of the 90s look well-run, and maybe not even then. Shanle would be a C player, he’s barely adequate and basically right at the average of all linebackers including the “camp bodies”. So by B+/A- I mean somebody who is good enough they will have at least four other teams after them, who are “in their prime” or only just past it, who have performed well but are not a superstar (yet at least might have higher potential left in them), but yet people who will seriously consider chasing the ring over the absolute maximum money. Said person isn’t going to be looking for even a top-end (much less record) contract for their position, who will be happy with roughly average pay for their position, but will also almost certainly be worth at least a little bit more than we pay them.
Who do you see out there who might fit that description? And of them, if you had to pick only three, who do you want most?
BTW, in this scenario I’m assuming we lose at least one of Meachem and Porter. Since we kept Colston, somebody else will outbid us for Meachem. Alternately, if you want, somebody can outbid us for Colston but we do keep Meachem.
I was also too greedy. Instead of “at least 5” minor-players I should have said 3-4. After the “big five” of Drew, Nicks, Colston, Meachem, and Porter (by name recognition far more than recent performance), we only have seven others who aren’t currently signed. (We’ve apparently already quietly resigned Canfield, and TE Daniel Hardy was apparently not on the roster at all or was on the practice squad and was snapped up by the WhineQueens. We apparently already did similarly with two CBs and two offensive linemen from other teams practice squads as well.)
So of our minor-players we retain, let’s say at least two are RFAs (options: Chase Daniel, Justin Drescher, and Jonathan Casillas), plus then probably only one (if we even want any) of our remaining options (Alex Brown, Aubreyo Franklin, Shaun Rogers, Fabian Washington).
So now that I’ve fixed the base settings, we have already a decent set of people around… but once we sign the three or four “major” people of our own we really want to keep, who can we bring in from the outside from that “second tier” of still pretty good players that would help us out?
Gah. I keep finding too many versions of our free agency list. We have at least a few others. All the above are all free agents at least. But there are several more that the first site I looked at didn’t have listed:
Jonathon Amaya – ERFA
Adrian Arrington – RFA
Jeff Charleston – UFA
Jo-Lonn Dunbar – UFA
Ramon Humber – RFA
John Kasay – UFA
Turk McBride – UFA
Pat McQuistan – UFA
Still I think most of these (plus the non “big names” who are UFAs I mentioned above) are either people we don’t want anyway or we can get dirt cheap if we do.
The original question — who do you add — still stands. If you’re really bored, you can also tell me who they replace. :)
Why is the Brees contract taking so long when they already know pretty close what they'll have to pay?
Waiting for the other party to blink ;)

IMHO
Keep Franklin at a reasonable price, if some else offers him the world, tell him see ya. Brown was and is a waste, in my opinion, especially after the injury. Didn’t live up to draft hopes and just seemed lost trying to protect Drew. Cut him and pick up a decent back-up in free agency.

I usually don’t give up on a player this quickly but I can’t get the images of Chris Long running over and around Brown with little to no effort. Brown didn’t look like he was able to hang with NFL talent whatsoever. I doubt he will be cut this soon but it wasn’t exactly pleasurable watching him play.

might be difficult to put Vilma outside- don't know if he would do well with the transition
I think Vilma and Dunbar platooning and then Casillas and Wilson starting on the outside, maybe keep Humber as a backup/rotating LB. Don’t know much about Nate Bussey. Herring- difficult to assess.

Sweet! A shout out (sorta).
For a first rounder I think Ingram is a complete bust. Heck, he’d be unimpressive as a UFA. The guy just has no power, no speed, no capability for the pro game from what I can see. I can’t believe we wasted a pick on him. Did I mention that he’s injured ALL THE TIME? Anyway, I didn’t want to bring him up yet again because I’ve been complaining about him all over the place. But seriously, he is terrible so far. I know everyone doesn’t agree with me so I’m taking my ball and going home with this one.
I just wanted to check in again and say thanks for all the excellent answers to my questions. Excellent information and discussion. Thanks, fellas!
