Umm… well they almost certainly need somebody… but those guys might be a bit hard to get, plus are pretty small (quick, but small) plus fairly terrible against the run. They aren’t the type of guys I would expect Spags to target in FA.

Hmm… OK Freeney is bigger than I thought. Still not sure we’d want to give up draft picks for him, and he’s not a FA (at least not at this time).

On the other hand, he does have a really high salary (and they’re going to need cap space, especially so if they release Peyton, but even if not it’s pretty likely) so it’s possible he gets released outright or given away for a mid-to-late-round pick…

Seems like it would be difficult either way. We’d have a hard time absorbing his current salary in a trade and an equally hard time being able to afford him in free agency. I’m certain we wouldn’t be the only team interested in having him. Would be a great move if we could somehow manage it though.

Well I won’t go so far as to say it’s impossible. Freeney would want a lot of guaranteed money if we tried to do a deal that would be cap-friendly (and we’d have to) but he’d probably be worth it as well, so IF he were to become a FA we’d still have a shot.

And if we decided to trade for him (which I really am not very keen on) it’s perfectly legitimate to require a renegotiated contract as a condition of the trade (or he reverts to Indy). So even then there are options.

But before we can look at contract, we’d have to decide if we really want him. (And for that matter we have to know if he’s truly available.) If Spags doesn’t think he’s worth it, we’re not going to sign him. And if he can’t play the run then we won’t sign him. Last year the Indy rush defense was putrid — though it did show slight signs of improvement at times late in the year — but how much of that was him and how much of that was the putrid DTs… I don’t have PFF so I don’t really know.

Only then can Mickey try to work out some sort of fancy contract.

if not them, who? (would you expect Spags to target, then)

if not now, when?

if not here, where?

these last two are just a joke…

Calais Campbell!!! I’m not going to give up hope on getting him until I see that he is signed somewhere. He is the best FA available on the D-line.

If you're gonna dream, dream big

He is a large dude...

IF we could get him, he’d be the perfect DE for Spags. He’s a guy who can slide inside, much like Cam Jordan and we could rush 4 DEs like the Giants would do. Imagine if you will Will Smith, Calais Campbell, Cam Jordan, and Jr Gallette.

Um, I like that idea a bit too much…

and..

to sweeten the image a bit more, at 6 foot 8, Campbell in the middle is perfect for both block passes, which could lead to more INTs and block kicks…

We need to offer him whatever we can afford to

by BlackandGold4ever on Jan 30, 2012 7:41 AM CST up reply actions

Given that he’s coming off a serious injury, that might reduce the number of teams clamoring for him. And that might give us at least half a shot…
