2012 New Orleans Saints Mock Draft

Once again, I have nothing better to do then rant about a subject I hardly understand, but I attempt to fake knowledge of the subject. In other words, I transformed into a blogger. Check out my idiotic ramblings after the jump!

Star-divide

2nd Round (58)- Zach Brown, OLB, North Carolina: I'm desperatly shutting out reality and praying that we actually spend our top selection on an outside linebacker. Maybe it'll actually happen this year! What? No, I'm totally not crying right now. 3rd Round (90)- Ryan Broyles, WR, Oklahoma: No hometown discount? What if we throw in a side of coleslaw? ...OK then. Looks like we're drafting a WR. A lot of people are down on Broyles, but I think he'll become an elite Wide Reciever. 4th Round (122)- Star Lotluelelei, DT, Utah: We really need raw talent at Defensive Tackle and... OK, I admit it, he had me at the name. 5th Round (154) Shea McClelin, DE, Boise State: I don't understand how this guy wouldn't be drafted earlier. We need to get to the Quarterback. He could easily convert to DT or LB if needed. 6th Round (166 & 169) T.J Graham, WR, N.C State: Graham could flourish under our system. (then again, who couldn't?) Dexter Heyman, OLB, Louisville: I've always been high on prospects from Louisville, but Heyman can tackle with the best of them. Plus, with a 40 time as low as 4.49, he's one of the fastest LB prospects. 7th Round (218) A kicker. Any Kicker. PLEASE. Garrett Hartley can't hit a 20 yarder in OT to save his life. Probably Blair Walsh from Georgia or Will Snyderdine from Duke. *Note: I'm not sure why the picks are bundled together. I spaced them apart, but it refuses to stay that way. If anyone can point out a way to fix that, please tell me.

First off

Which free agents stay is going to determine a lot of how we have to draft. We have too many free agent loose ends to even consider who we will draft. A lot depends on Drew’s contract. They really need a cap friendly contact that will give Drew a lot of bonus money that can be spread over the length of the contract. If we can keep Drew’s cap money on the shy side of 12 million, then we will be able to sign a couple more free agents, but if his cap number goes toward 16 million, then we loose a lot of free agents. One guy I would hate to loose is Colston. However, he will be able to shop around and we cannot afford both Drew and the dollars Colston rightly will bring.

If we can keep Drew’s cap money on the shy side of 12 million

Mickey Loomis is a god among men if that were to happen. But even if it doesn’t, we know there are going to be a few contracts shed to help make room. Not saying these guys are going, but bith Will Smith and Jon Vilma are both hitting the cap for a combined 11 mil. If we can get Drew around the 15-17 million (which shouldn’t be too difficult) I still think Loomis can make it work with Nicks and Colston. Give Colston his $$$ and tag Nicks.

I’d wait a couple of weeks after the Super Bowl before trying to analyze what our WR needs are going to be.

...

I doubt Zach Brown makes it to the end of the second round. If he does, we better grab him. I think a OLB at that spot would more likely be a guy like Audie Cole or Bobby Wagner. As long as we stay away from Sean Spence! I think we will be looking at either a guy who can play WIL or slide Vilma over (if we keep him at his salary) and grab a new MIK. Both Wagner and Cole have xp at both spots.

DT Derrick Wolfe is another option in the 3rd-4th round range.

I’d like to see us grab TE Ladarius Greene from ULL in the 4th as project TE. Has a huge ceiling, could be reminiscent of Graham/Colston Hybrid.

As far as kicker, Hartley is our guy. We just gave him a sizeable (for a kicker) contract for five years, he’s not going anywhere.

I think we hold off on QB again. Chase Daniel is not the QB of the future, but that has more to do with how long he will sit behind Drew if he stays than it does about his ability. Once he goes FA, he’ll probably look for a spot to start.

Why on earth is everyone so high on Audie Cole. Everything I read says the same thing. Barely adequate speed, poor change of direction skills, a productive tackler but poor tackling technique, trouble fighting off blocks, slow to recover…….all of those are direct quotes from 3 different profile write ups so far.

At this point I have no doubt the guy is obviously related to someone who posts regularly here.

-Lombardi was wrong...it's the internet, not fatigue that makes cowards of us all. But then again, what do you expect. Not like the guy could see the future.

Nope, he’s definitely who I’m thinking of…mark my words….I smell a combine 4.85 in the 40.

Have you seen him play?

Made a big impression at Senior Bowl practices, and looked good in that game against a high level of talent. I haven’t seen much of him, but from what I’ve SEEN he looks good. I could care less about his 40 time, honestly. Does anybody really give a crap about Patrick Willis’ 40 time right now? I’d rather have a smart defender that’s in the right spots at the right time than worry about how fast a guy can run track with no one blocking him and no actual football in play. 40 times and position drills continue to get blown entirely out of proportion more and more every year, especially by fans. They’re not frigging Pokemon. I don’t care what a guy’s metrics are. Show me some film, and let me know about his work ethic and attitude. Late second round doesn’t seem like a reach.

by Jimbo03 on Jan 30, 2012 3:32 PM CST up reply actions

Saw one game, didn't come away incredibly impressed.

And sorry…yes, almost everyone cares about Willis’ 40 time. It’s his speed that allows him to cover the way he does, play the way he does, and crush RBs when they meet in the hole the way he does. Give me speed and athleticism any day over a slow and “smart” footballer any day of the week, especially come Sunday. He looked slow in pursuit and especially any time he had to change direction or got caught off guard. A guy with mid 4.8 speed is a two down linebacker at best. I don’t blow 40 speed out of proportion. But speed that slow will definitely allow TE’s to blow by him like he’s standing still…isn’t the coverage play of our LBs one of the things we’re trying to improve on?

-Lombardi was wrong...it's the internet, not fatigue that makes cowards of us all. But then again, what do you expect. Not like the guy could see the future.

I agree - there are guys that run fast on a track and when they are timed and they have a good 40 start technique

and there are also guys who are mediocre in the timed 40 trials but are fast in game situations.

Everything I've seen on him was mostly positive...

But like I said on my LB’er post, he is projected 3rd-4th round. Wouldn’t spend a 2nd round pick on him either. Would love Brown and instinct says he won’t drop that low for us, but didn’t expect Jordan to drop that far last year either.

more than an issue with a particular player..

i do not think we will target an interior LB.. who we could define as the single middle guy on the 4-3 (vilma) the guy that mostly arranges the defense..
or one of the 2 interior guys on the 3-4, who typically are run stoppers and are used at most covering the running back out of the backfield..
i’m confident that if we really looking to upgrade the defense, we need to look for a versatile outside guy.. a guy that could do many things well enough, or at least could have the potential to grow into possible duties..
he needs to be able to cover in the passing game.. but cannot be a safety size guy.. it would be great if he has some passrushing skills & he needs to be smart enough not to bite like a fish on playaction, maintain his lane asignments, fill his gap and all that..
what they call a tweener could be theoretically converted to this position.. somethimes successfully..
it ain’t that easy.. if it was.. shanle would have been doing it..
now.. y’all find me that guy..

Carolina moved John Beason to the WIL and had success until his injury. SO calling and setting the defense can be done from the other lb spots. I;m not against moving Vilma to the weakside at all if we covet a MIK like Burficit in the draft or Lofton in FA.

we need to look for a versatile outside guy.. a guy that could do many things well enough, or at least could have the potential to grow into possible duties..

I think this is going to be a big deal with Spags coming in. He seems to value versatile LBs who can hold up on there own

Also...

Seems GW was high on Jeremiah Hunter during camp before we stashed him on IR. Played alot of ILB in college at Iowa, which is good place for defenders, but also has the versitality to play outside. That being said, I have no idea what Spags will think of him. Although I’m sure everyone will get a fair shake.

Why on earth is everyone so high on Audie Cole.

being a 2nd to 4th round pick does not nessacarly equate to being high on him. Out of the options that will likely be available, he is a reasonably good option. It’s not like we’re talking 1st early second round.

After Scottie's accident

with the Red Barchetta, the band was never the same. Eventually, they exercised Free Will, and kicked him out. Afterwards, he professed relief, saying he was never comfortable in the Limelight, and that it was time to go solo, where he could work Closer to the Heart. Eventually, his musical career went into a tailspin, and he was last seen as a Working Man at McDonalds.

first pick needs to be a DE

and maybe someone could clarify this for me. Will Smith said in his last interview that the Saints defense played mostly 3-4 this year. That surprised me to hear that. Weren’t we doing more 4-3 this season?

"We've established the run; we've established the pass. Now all we have to establish is another championship!" (And a Defense!)
"Some say the glass is half empty;
Some say the glass is half full.

Multiple defensive packages

The Saints, on account of the overwhelming number of games in which they accrued a multiple-score lead, spent an understandably generous portion of time in nickel/dime/dollar (5+ DB packages). What I believe Will was referring to is that, overall, there was a preponderance of 3-man DL rushes (whether that be from the 3-4 or the 3-3-5 nickel, etc.).

by Dr.J on Feb 1, 2012 11:39 AM CST up reply actions

no, I don't think that's the explanation as I saw those 3 man rushed but they were clearly the minority of the downs

and they `weren’t 3-4 schemes. Will Smith acted like the defense was oriented to 3-4 scheme but the personnel was better suited for 4-3.

Hartley can’t make a kick in OT from 20 to save his life, yet he sent the Saints to the Super Bowl in OT and set the super bowl record for most 40+ yard field goals? Doesn’t match up to me…

Hey what is up Saint Fans.

I know I will not get any sympathy from you guys; But I would like to ask a question. Please correct me (an outsider) about these thoughts. Drew is not going anywhere and I doubt that a franchise tag will be needed on him. Meacham not elite but a good #2 WR. So, I see a franchise tag going on either (WR) Colston or (OG) Carl Nicks. Where do you see this going in Colston or Nicks being Franchised? I got this Information here.

several "theories" going here..

mine goes like this..
brees gets a great contract with a rather favorable cap number for the 1st couple of years..

nicks gets the tag.. it costs close to 10 mill.. but hopefully he understands that he has to wait another year since we’re in a bind with the cap.. certain discomfort may be expected.. but he will get top tier money for an O-lineman, so he can’t be too mad.. this tactic may even motivate him rather than piss him off, to the point that he has his best year, yet..

colston gets a great offer but with a loaded back end although the guaranteed money is top 5 in the league.. he’s a 6 year veteran.. the senior of the receiving corp.. can play all positions.. is a 1st down making machine.. no matter how nicked he gets he always rebounds.. some temptation comes his way.. brees talks him out of it, hopefully..
meachum will be a cap casualty & will be allowed to walk.. he is good but only good in tear-drops.. erratic.. and has not shown enough consistency to challenge colston.. does not really compete for his catches..

unfortunately these contracts will likely put us over the cap or right at it..
we will have to trim some fat..
there are several players that have not lived up to their contracts.. others that are at a crossroads specially since we are going into a different defensive direction.. although at first glace you are not freeing a lot of money by terminating some contracts, the added numbers will..
there is no other way.. if you want to sign some rookies & maybe sign a 2nd-3rd tier FA..

this may seem crazy, but if you think that this offense has propelled the team so far.. it would be unwise to dismantle the only asset you have with just a mere hope of fortifying the defense..

by the 9th plague on Jan 30, 2012 9:20 PM CST up reply actions

First thank you. This is a kind of catch22.

“it would be unwise to dismantle the only asset you have with just a mere hope of fortifying the defense..”
I agree with you. But Spags needs big press corners and a good d[ine with at least a a Middle LB. The first year Spags was with the Rams1 st choice in 2nd rd was MLB Lauranitis. He always wants dlineman(why not worked before). I agree with you I would keep (OG) Nicks. Thank you for the insight, meet you on the flipside with my 2-14 Rams. Bless….

Neither will get tagged.

Brees is the only one we would spend the tag on. Colston will not make top 5 receiver money on the market, so why would we tag him and pay him that much? As for Nicks, if you tag an OL, it is the average of the top 5 OL in the league, regardless of position. So he would be getting top 5 LT money, something we don’t even spend on our LT. Brees will take a minor pay cut, we resign Nicks, Colston and Meach are gone, with V-Jax or Plax replacing them

Drew Brees- the REAL MVP.

sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do..

not enough time to negotiate a multi-year contract that matches or exceeds evans’..
(who got a 7 year 50something million deal..)
the franchise tags are due in march.. a long term deal will cost you 7 million cap hit minimum.. taking a 2.6 million loss, but ensuring your continuity on the OL, is well worth it..

Open for discussion: Garrett Hartley

Who wants to keep John Kasay? Why not?

Is there any sort of mini controversy coming up here?

And as saintskid26 said above, Hartley does hold a Super Bowl record.

Hartley is the future; Kasay is not

People forget: Kasay came out of retirement. He still has great accuracy, but not great range.; and what skills he retains can disappear overnight. Athletes age quickly.

Hartley is notorious for missing one short kick, in a game that shouldn’t have gotten away to the point the kick was needed. He’s also come through brilliantly in clutch situations. I don’t understand why everyone seems to be so down on him.
